Labguy does a prequal today. We go back to the construction of the Cockroft-Walton voltage multiplier and the CRT bias resistor divider string.
This is a watch Labguy work video. You have been warned!
We work through some confusion in the layout of the multiplier components on the perf board. There was a better way. But, Labguy likes to work empirically and organically when building.
In the end, we see if the system design was successful. Hint: It was. Also watch to the end for a teaser of the upcoming next episode.
If you like the video, you know what to do. I won't ever tell you what to do. This channel's viewers are not stupid and don't need to be told how to press the darned buttons! My viewers will only comment if they have something to say. You folks rock!
Enjoy!

You are master of your craft, sir.

You could add a neon bulb (NE2 or similar) and suitable resistor across the HV, "don't touch when lit" Good work Rich!

Ahhh, great to see you back in business labguy. That void in my daily craving for a certain type of geekery has been satisfied once more !!!

I like that you're not afraid to show your mistakes. No more excuses! Time for me to break out the slobbering iron.

Thanks! Hopefully, I can spare the next up and coming experimenter from some of the more basic errors in the process. No worries. There are plenty more boo boos for them to discover on their own. Solving the "issues" is the foundation for the eventual satisfaction of a "job well done".

Great job! The clip at the end really shows how impressively sharp it is.

So lovely to see you back. Beautiful work as always. Watched part one. I have an 8 pin tube waiting for a project with a 4v heater. Must blow the dust off it.

Very cool! I love seeing projects with cathode ray tubes...or actually any vacuum tubes! I also really like that you show how you were trouble shooting the circuit. I really want to try making something with a small CRT someday, but I still have a LOT to learn!

Doggone! Your method of working on perf boards looks very similar to my own, including the mistakes and muttering! But I think you are more calm. Well done.

The perf board for the circuit is to avoid having metallic pads that could carry an arc over distance. The front panel was just more convenient to cut than a metal plate as well. This arrangement and main board are temporary experimental breadboards. Calm? Haha. Thanks! That's the beauty of video editing.

One little trick I do when I can is to keep track of wires I stick to standardized color/ number codes like resistor bands. Ex. Brown=1, 2=red 3= orange etc. If you cheap, use colored Sharpies and white wire. When you get to 10 you can again use brown with a black stripe or whatever makes it easy. Not a perfect system, but it can help to find the correct wire at a glance.

You look very familiar. Have you ever been to Red Bluff California? 🤔 Great video.

I did some time there once long long ago. Red Bluff is a good place to be from. As far from as possible.

Thank you for the instructive video. I have collected a lot of electrostatically deflected CRTs over the years, but have not had much luck finding sockets for them. They are mostly 3 inch and 5 inch, and most are NOS government surplus. I can't remember the numbers right now, but I think I have a few 5BP1s and 3RP1s in the mix. I am glad your scope project is going viral, it's been a very long time since anyone has put one on RU-vid... Have you considered offsetting your cathode much more negative so you would be able to DC couple to the plates with the with the plate driver circuits ground referenced?
@videolabguy
@videolabguy Год назад
You can find the tube sockets on Ebay, relatively easily. If you go to my web site, Labguy's World, and contact me from there, I can probably spare a socket or two. The DC coupled design will do exactly as you recommend. I usually wire my tubes with the cathodes at -HV and the anode at or near ground for that very reason. This design was aimed at making a television from the beginning. TV scan waveforms being constant work with AC coupling by default.

@@videolabguy Thank you for the support and your kind offer. I will be eagerly looking forward to your next video to see how you solve some of the problems I faced when considering designing one myself!

The pots r metal & not earthed , do you trust the insulation ? No grounding ? Live long ? Prosper 🙂👍
@videolabguy
@videolabguy Год назад
You are correct. In this version, I am taking some manageable risk. The final design uses plastic extensions on the pots. You may note that the voltages are arranged to go from the lowest on one end of the board to the highest on the other. The entire unit sits on my silicone rubber matts which are of the same material used by power companies to drape over live power lines. I only use one hand when contacting the live unit.
