here's 2 very short and rare interviews with the elusive bobbie gentry.
both are from a radio only record from the national guard titled, "guard session". based on the songs played (which have been edited out) they both seem to be from 1968.
within the photo slide show is a photo of bobbie's original lyrics to, "ode to billie joe" which sheds a little more light on the story.
and as a reminder, i have added a small blurb at the end about the release of a 2018 bobbie gentry box set on capitol records. i do not own it nor am i being compensated for the mention.

54 years and we're still talking about Ode to Billy Joe... what an incredible contribution to music. You are an amazing artist Bobbie Gentry!

Yes, I just had a discussion the other day about how maybe he handed her flowers that she threw off the bridge. Bobbie later said the song was about 'unconscious cruelty'. The pastor saw them throw something off. Then she would go back and pick flowers and throw them off after his suicide as tribute and regret perhaps.

@@gb747gb I remember the first time I heard the song, on my car fadio, on my way to work. I had to sit in the parking lot until it was over, so I'd know how to find it in a record shop. I've been an avid fan ever since.

I listened to Ode just now, and it really is a good piece of writing. It has a communicative style that's been emulated since, and possibly done before, but not quite from the context she performed it with. I'm baffled by her just disappearing about 40 years ago. Well done!

I wonder if she had voice/diction lessons to rid herself of a strong southern drawl. You can tell she's southern but doesn't speak like she's from the Mississippi delta.
@angelabluebird609
@angelabluebird609 Год назад
Yet she sings with her accent. I'm southern, and learned to speak, minimizing my accent, at least, when I left the South. Some people would pretend they couldn't understand me with my accent. Not really believable, as my accent is not strong, I grew up in a city in the 60's/70's. Most people outside the South loved my accent. Drawl is western/southern, Texas, etc., accent is elsewhere in the South.
@MeadeSkeltonMusic
@MeadeSkeltonMusic Год назад
No, its just that Southern "accents" are often exaggerated on Movies and TV. I am from the South and most Southerners sound normal but we don't have the oddities that Northerners often do such as adding e vowels to their I vowels so that time sounds like "tieeem" and I sounds like "aheee" . Southerners are relaxed speakers and there is more than just one Southern accent.
@JCNDCIII
@JCNDCIII Год назад
@@MeadeSkeltonMusic True. But I grew up in the Mississippi Delta. I know a LOT of people that speak just like the way we are represented in movies.
