Outstanding song and performance by Bobby Gentry of her trailblazing hit Fancy, the story of a young woman using prostitution as a means of escaping poverty. No other artist depicted the dark underbelly of the South in such cinematic terms, right from her breakthrough hit Ode To Billy Joe in 1967 to Fancy, released in November 1969 and a Top 40 crossover hit. This rare TV performance of Fancy comes from January 1970, less than two months after initial release.
