Another of the episodes in which Bobby co-hosted The Mike Douglas Show in July 1970. This episode is rather special as it not only features Bobby singing Long Line Rider and Bridge Over Troubled Water, but also arguing strongly (politely) with Mary Avara, a film censor from Maryland. This section shows, perhaps, an insight into where Bobby stood politically and culturally at this time.

WOW thank you so much for this, I just watched Bobby's perfomances so far, but I will definitly watch the whole video later. This is my first time seeing those perfomances of Bridge Over Troubled Water and Long Line rider, also the first time I see him singing the latter one without a denim suit and with a guitar lol. Thank you again!! :))

What blows my mind every time is Mary Avara says they got experts getting paid $25 per hour ?????=))))) it's insane. I hate that almost no one in that studio is on Bobby's side.

I love Bobby, but what I think he failed to realize during this debate is that most of the movies that Mary Avara and her team were saying "no" to were hardcore porn films coming out at that time. And he's saying "Well, if you like what you see and want to recommend it to your child, you should be able to." No one in their right mind would want their child to watch porn.

@PositivelyPam honestly, I think he manely said that just to piss her off cause you can see how frustrated he is toward the end. And even tho I understand both sides. I think what he says is also clear. My question is, if at that time, their state had rating laws. Which in that case, if something is not rated for children. It should be obvious that a child shouldn't see it. So I think toward the end their just two angry individuals =))))

@@dorsahz5359 to answer your question, I don't know...I know Maryland was not the only state to have its own censor board at this time. The Supreme Court declared films to be commerce, not art, going way back in 1915...so that meant they could be regulated. Motion picture ratings came out in 1968 but maybe they hadn't been adopted yet in Maryland? I totally get what Bobby was saying and believed in and he's right - it should be up to parents and not a censor board for parents to decide what is best for your kids - but like the other guests said, not every kid has a parent that cares. I think Mary Avara was mainly concerned about porn, not the average movie that may have violence and swear words.

@postitivelyPam, that was not the films that Mary Avara was censoring in the main. Of course, X-rated filmed had to go through the board of censors, but the vast majority of films were not of that nature.

@@BobbyDarinFan6833 yes it was. Look up obituaries published by the media after her death and her role on the board in general. She may have taken some issue with controversial mainstream films at the time ("Pretty Baby" is cited in one source, and rightfully so. That movie is disgusting and exploited Brooke Shields, who was a child at the time she filmed it) but porn was her main concern. (“The actors-if you could call them that-were like acrobats: inside out, upside down, all numbers and combinations, gigantic closeups of some of the worst-looking things I ever seen in my life.") Someone on the stage should have asked her for clarification on the types of movies she was banning, but there is no doubt that is what she was talking about.
