Here's a rather in-depth conversation with Bobby Darin in which he talks openly and at length about his time in Big Sur in the late 1960s, why it happened, and what he gained from it.

First....Bobby Darin was so MULTI-TALENTED !! Second..... Such an eloquent speaker. What a damn shame he had to leave so early. His early hit SPLISH SPLASH comes into my head often. I adored him.
I saw Bobby perform at the Sahara in Vegas around 1960-61 with George Burns. Both were great. Evidently George Burns first introduced Bobby to Las Vegas. I remember him singing "Mack the Knife" and doing a sand dance with Mr. Burns that night. Seeing Bobby at age 15 was a real treat for me! RIP, dear Bobby!
+Roger Wilco Yeah, I think that people were just generally wiser back then. Imagine if a pop singer of today would've been faced with the same troubles Darin went through. Most of the times, they would have crashed and burned within 10 days. But as I said, people were smarter back then, and they knew much better that if there's something wrong with you then it's time for a change. Nowadays you can just blame it on society. Shame we lost him so soon. He had very much more to give, and given his great versatility and his apparent spiritual growth it sure would've been interesting to know what it would've been. A real shame, and that's all I can say.
Agreed. Darin really was a pretty deep thinker and wasn't afraid to mix it up on talk shows and tell things from his point of view. I agreed with him so it was easy for me to like him, plus I loved his swagger and style. On his last Tonight Show appearance he was supposed to plug his latest movie. Carson mentioned it in his intro and that was the last that was said. Darin did six minutes of exhaustive (for him at this late stage) medley work and then talked to Carson about all sorts of interesting things. You don't get that nowadays. Even folks who disagreed with him politically or philosophically had to at least give him the respect he deserved for his intelligence (chess master) singing prowess/musicianship (Grammy Award winner ) acting ability (Oscar nominee) and most of all for his courage in the face of horrific familial and health hardships. Genius? Absolutely.
Just read that he did one very bad thing to himself...did not take the pre-dental antibiotics his cardiologist ordered to prevent infection due to his heart condition. He developed sepsis requiring heart surgery. Died in recovery room.
I met someone years ago who knew Bobby Darin and told me what a nice guy he really was. Bobby you are in Heaven singing in God's choir. We'll see you one day there.
All of the talk show hosts in the 60's and 70's were that way: Carson, Paar, Merv, Cavett... all of them. Nowadays the new hosts are completely untalented idiots who interrupt constantly.
I had this huge crush on Bobby Darin as a four year old child, he was my hero then and still now….. Bobby was a very honest open person and told it as it was, holding back nothing….. Bobby's fans never gave up on him, intact we just wished him the very best and waited for him to come back to entertaining his fans…. That he did in Bobby Darin style all the way….. Man is a genius and the greatest entertainer of all time in the business in my opinion, ever….. BOBBY REST IN PEACE BIG GUY !!!

Wow an actual conversation. Not just promotion for an upcoming project, movie or tour. Talk shows like this do NOT exist today. Now it's a a rushed interview, politics & commercials.
Depends on the venue and the time given for the interview. On Late Night TV, most of the guests have ten minutes or less to talk, sometimes half that, and they can't really have a conversation. But sometimes they will give a full 20 minutes or half hour to a guest on rare occasions and try to have a real talk. The best places to go for that are the podcasts, like Howard Stern or Conan O'Brien or Chris Wallace (on Max). They give some time for the guest to delve into some real conversation.
Bobby Darin seemed to be a very good guy. He was handsome, smart and nice. I'm in love with the person he was, even thought I don't know much about him/his life. Very good interview, true and sincere.
Glad to see Mr. Robert Darin was fulfilled AND happy for five years before he left The Earth. He was a well rounded performer. He sang great. He could act. And he had some smooth physical moves. imo Bobby Darin was under appreciated as an entertainer. I'm thrilled that I was around to enjoy his talent.
These times (2000 to 2021) very few entertainers of his caliber. We Baby Boomers were lucky to have been blessed by so many EXCEPTIONALLY talented folks in show business and in the recording industry. I feel sad for the younger generations who aren't so lucky. Very few exceptional entertainers around today.
@@joannaedwards6325 im 14 and im obsessed and probably the only person in my generation who knows more about the 1950-1960s and bobby darin than anyone, im lucky enough to have found bobby dairn in music and just life, his quote "it isnt true that you live only once. you only die once, you live lots of times if you know how." he was probably refering to his life, and whenever i hear that i always am reminded how wonderful his life truly was, people say that its sad that he died so soon, and people keep saying that he could have acheived more, but truly he lived his life better than probably a 100 year old, he knew he could die any moment, and he had been told and reminded that for his whole life, I dont think its sad that he died at 37 years old because he acheived his dream of being a legend, atleast to me. and acheiving what seemed to be impossible.

Thank you for posting this timely interview. Sure hope some young people listen to what truths are said here and choose to take it to heart. I read all the comments and so shocked and SADDENED to see one young man near the end call Bobby Darin a bore. Then he said, "Who is this clown?" Wow! If that is any indication of how young people are thinking now WE ARE IN DEEP TROUBLE in the future when THEY are running things. So happy to know that when that happens I WILL HAVE MOVED ON. Thank God!
What he says 3 minutes in is even truer for today. I heard a spiritual channeling last month ,it was stated " buy what we need ,not what we want" because the excess is what is causing our planet stress, hence tornados, floods, fires etc. I grew up with Bobby ,his presence was truly felt and appreciated then ...
Like John F. Kennedy, Bobby Darin was very sick as a child, spent a lot of time in bed, and spent that time reading. He eventually graduated from Bronx Science, probably the most competitive high school in the country. It shows. His sentences are always perfect and he's totally tuned in to what he is saying. I remember seeing Cronkhite announce his death. I was devastated. What a man!
Yes, Bobby Darin was born a with serious heart murmur, which had severely damaged his heart. To which did eventually shorten his life., getting a Pigs heart or something like tart put in him in a new experimental kind of surgery. It gave him a few more years but ultimately he died way too young. But then again he was told as a child that he would not live long enough to even be an adult. So maybe those "precious years" were "a gift" to Bobby and the world.
Well that explains how he lost his Bronx accent. I read where he was a member of Mensa, a highly prestigious organization for highly intelligent people.
In addition to all his fine talents he had great introspection and an easy-to-deliver type of wisdom. Few were ever as blessed as he. And to be out of this world at this particular time is icing on the cake.
Such a great singer and man. He looks older than he's years here I have to say. Died so young. Singing in the sky now with all the other greats. Rip xxxx
Bobby Darin one of a kind. I liked that he trusts his intellect and that he's self-reflective a truth-seeker which we are all a part of this great Consciousness and can discover ourselves when we live in this conscientious state
I like how Darin laugh's when Douglas asks him if he did anything constructive. Then he goes on to explain even if he did nothing it would've been constructive. I'm glad he took that time for himself to just chill out and be grateful.
Thanks for this rare and uplifting interview. He's so deeply rooted, finding peace within, which is inherent in all of us. I admire him--his unlimited talent, his music!!, and humbleness.
Wish the description above told what month and year this interview was. Bobby died December 1973, I believe this was near his end. Loved his talent, he had a tough life, his heart did him in at age 37 was in recovery after a 2nd heart surgery and died, such a shame. So glad we had him the years we did, his songs will always live on, classics.

At the end of this interview, when he says he wants to give people that entertainment, yet enjoy it himself; he wants to radiate it (I'm paraphrasing)...check out the video where he sings "Midnight Special"; this is completely evident. I smile because I can see he is enjoying what he's doing, and he is bringing joy to those he's performing for. I, too, am sorry he died so young. I agree with most of the comments here: he was real, extremely talented, and performers today cannot hold a candle to him. I doubt we can even call them performers, as they sell themselves, and not their talent (if any!!)

Bobby Darin Sandra Fer were soul mates. Their love was pure and sensitive. They adored each other, they both had growing up issues, although different, but still had traumatic issues, they overcame when they found each other..Sandra Dee loved Bobby Darin till she died. Both are together in HEAVEN. 💖💖🙏
Love his authenticity. Could he have been talking about Elvis Presley, great performer who was not happy in the later years, because he did not have the freedom to be himself?
That is exactly who I thought he was talking about. By this time Elvis was a parody of himself. Don't get me wrong because I LOVE Elvis but he had the manager, agents family etc. telling him he had to go on and continue. I'm sure Elvis was one of the ones he was talking about but certainly didn't want to call out in public.
I'm not sure what year this was-- he did this show several times in 1968 and then several in 1970. If it was 1968, I think Elvis fits. He was doing those terrible cookie cutter films then. By 1970, he was doing his gigs again and he looked great and was enjoying a fresh "come back."
I think there are a lot of people that fall into the category of having everything but not happy. I think a lot of us have unresolved issues from childhood that need to be addressed and are pulling us down and affecting our decisions and behavior. So we go mindlessly about our lives e=without even being aware of what's going on with us.
What a darn shame to lose such a gifted singer. He had presence, rythm, style, character, & an amazing voice. Sinatra was too much hype. Dean was forever crooning nasally. Nat had a beautiful voice. Sammy & Bobby were TOP. From Lebanon!🎉🎉🎉
Bobby D. had such a varied and interesting career, from Splish Splash to Mack the Knife to If I Were a Carpenter. As shown by this interview, he was always challenging himself, always growing. One of my favorite of his songs was Amy, which he wrote.
My heart aches for him even to this day. Between the tragic loss of Robert Kennedy which hit him hard and then to find out that his sister was actually his mother sent him over the edge. Luckily for us he did return to TV before his death at 37. RIP sweet Bobby!
@@char7488 I'm sure it played a part but from what I read, he had a dental problem and was supposed to take antibiotic which he failed to do and developed an infection which lead to sepsis.....such a tragedy!
@@pokergalpoker Yes, I read that also. But you have to wonder if he purposely did not take the antibiotics, as he had other procedures before this one and should have known better. Also, at this time his health had really deteriorated. But of course we'll never know.
So strange to see two people having a real conversation on a talk show about real things, not some bullsh*t promotion about a terrible movie or tour. TV execs have gotten super greedy where every minute is either an advertisement or an artist/actor promoting something or spouting some silly gibberish.
Had Enough that's because he had nothing to promote at this time, his Career was over, perhaps he was using the interview of saying ' look at me I'm not dead, but I've a new album of old song's coming out soon'. He chose to get way from it all when his career had ended, not during the middle of it, he was probably bored
he never really ever talked about the heart impairment publicly, did he? I grew up as a fan. When he died, I remember being so sad. I still love his music.

He didn't talk about finding out his sister was really his mother before he took the year off either. That and being with Bobby K the day he was killed would be enough for anyone to go off and think about life.
Even though I didn’t grow up when he was a star I really love his songs. This interview shows how insightful Bobby Darin was and he didn’t mind talking about it and at length explaining it. Didn’t like the interviewers superficial question at all, it seemed that he didn’t grasp it... Too sad that such a talent had to die so young 😢
Jesus told everyone this about excess over 2000 years ago or tried to. I’ve been going through that same thing, I was in a mall and something said get out of here you don’t need anything else. I have a boot and shoe fetish and expensive kind. I wasn’t poor like Bobby I just had always had everything, and being in show business it contributed and I know that only my love for other people and God is all that matters anymore to me.
Finally found Beyond the Sea here which I think Kevin Spacey did a great job with not just acting, the direction and way the story was told was brilliant. To hear Darins words here were great and heartfelt....dignified himself and circumstances. No one can ever match his talent nowadays
I recall was the co-host for the week. Oddly he did at least one oldie Splish Splash on the piano and it was at a time when he wasn't about looking back.
Bobby Darin was an "intellectual" he had a very high IQ and was part of the "Mensa" organization for highly intelligent people. He could memorize anything, and could play just about any instrument. It all came very easily to him to play so many instruments, write songs, sing them, produce them, and he was a great dancer also. He could move like a Black man. Sammy Davis used to always say that "Bobby Darin has a Black man's soul inside of a white man's body". Had natural rhythm proved that big time! Not many singers and musicians can "do it all" but Bobby Darin did! Bobby Darin's mother pretended he was her older sister most of his life and when he found out her betrayal he was totally devastated! He was so poor that when he was a young baby, they opened a drawer and that was his crib! I mean think about that!

Cameron Diaz, Renee Zellweger and so many people take a break or leave so they can regroup and know how to deal with their lives. This was about 4 years before he died. His son Dodd was 8 1/2 during this interview. How sweet he knew the 8 1/2 age of his son and not simply "8" years of Dodd. I wonder how his life would have been with Connie Francis.
Isn't it sad to see someone who clinged so much to life to do good things die young, and those who have everything throw it away on drugs and die young as well. And culture idolizes rock stars as our new gods.
