One thing that many of you admirers never mention, Bobby Jones was an amateur his whole career. He never played for money. I never go to any PGA tour events anymore because I think that the pros today are really treated like the Queen of England. Bobby Jones was the greatest golfer of all time and he possessed the most beautiful swing of all time. A real gentleman and authentic hero whose innate goodness shines right through.
Agree, and he won thirteen majors and retired at 28 years old yes 28 during his playing days he received his law degree, started practicing. Law over 2 years before he retired and had several other degrees. Bobby went months without touching a club and went out and won the tournament.
What's so amazing is he earned a degree as a mechanical engineer and then one in literature before he passed his law exam. Can't imagine playing with the early clubs, balls, and courses.
5:37 Unreal consistency from those lies. This guy had such brilliant hands. And that beautiful, natural rhythm. the ease with which he played the game is unmatched. 90 years later, and still no one has made golf look any easier than this.
What is so great is how casual he was hitting those shots. The sand is the same as it was then. The balls are better today, but that is no factor in these shots. We even have better clubs than Bobby did. But man could he play. He hits these shots like they are easy.
Bob Jones was the best golfer of his time having won the 4 major tournaments by the age of 28 as an amateur than he quit to work in his family law firm. He developed the Augusta golf course with Cliff Roberts and it became the home of the Masters one of the great Tournaments. His popularity went beyond golf - he was considered a national hero. He was known to be a kind and gentleman, unfortunately he died far to early and suffered silently the last many years of his life.

It's like you've never heard a respectful man speak to you that way before... and he's the teacher (*Guru). I understand now more than ever the history of classiness and reverence that will ever survive this game, it's the real nature of this sport, one that exceeds any other.
In my opinion, it takes a major talent to hit that long chip shot from the sand as consistently as he does it here. Buried lies are no cinch, either. Jones was incredible.
Bobby Jones did it all, Great golfer, very well educated ,Lawyer, engineer, and to top it off he created the greatest golf course and tournament in the world and was good looking and had all the ladys! This guy could have been president if he wanted to!
Donald Trump did it all, Cheats at golf, has good writers, a couple of forged degrees, and to top it off created some of the worst and most unsuccessful golf courses in the world and thought he was good looking and bought all the ladies. Exactly this is about a person who was a damn good golfer plus he's the only one in history to win a grand slam in golf and who's done that lately in golf.
Why forget Tiger? That's ridiculous. Bobby, Hogan, Jack, and Tiger were all the greatest of their eras. They're all goats. Let's just leave it there. No need to denigrate Tiger to make your point about Jones' greatness.
Well, not taking away anything from Bobby Jones, BUT, watch the first and second plugged lie shots. The first flies half way to the hole and rolls up to the hole. The 2nd barely gets out of the trap, some 15 feet short of the first shot but then rolls twice as far as the first. Look at the green! It's all down hill from the top of the trap and flat around the hole then uphill just after the hole. It's a set up. Anyone would do well from where Jones is playing the shot.

Might note that Bobby Jones won the Slam in 1930 using hickory shafted clubs, although steel shafts were legalized in 1924. Obviously steel shafted technology was not light years ahead of hickory. Hickory shafted golfing is the only facet of golf that's growing in popularity these days. Six clubs and 3 hour rounds of golf and the period apparel are part of its appeal.
Amazing chips with what is a 7-iron out of the sand. I don't think any pro would think of doing that on a long bunker shot like that... the lost art of a true genius short game.
Actually, I have a set of clubs from that era. He is using what was then called a "niblick" which became the 9 iron. The 9 iron from my set is 54 degrees or what is now a sand wedge. If I ever replace the shafts in those clubs they will be as good as anything made today.
@@bradyhathorn6967 If you are asking about the grooves.....they are in great shape. There is little wear and tear on these clubs. They are Hillerich & Bradsby blades. Not for sale. To me, the shafts are not very good for today's crowd. These were among the first mass produced steel and they didn't have them down pat yet.

doubt you are "the" ben wright or you would understand the difference. i play hickory shafted clubs and i will say this. the ball does not go as far, bad shots are worse and good shots not as good as you thought and short game is h e double toothpicks! not to mention sand! get some hickories and shoot under par. come back and tell me "if bobby can do that then"!

The sand wedge was just coming in the near future as Gene Sarazen used one he made in the 1932 Open Championship, the year after this film was made.
The club is not supposed to dig into the sand. It is made to glide along on top like a surf board. Don't try to "dig" the ball out. Just "scrape" the sand starting 2 or 3 inches behind the ball. The sand will pile up in front of the club and it is that sand that pops the ball up and out. One of the easiest shots in the game.
@@hughcapetien Yeah, in these films Jones is using a club equal to a modern wedge of 54 degrees. It is not a sand wedge which was not invented until the following year by Gene Sarazen. A wedge will "dig" into the sand and is no longer what is used in the sand traps. Now, it's what is called a sand wedge. This lesson is outdated by the newer equipment.

great leg action, like all the greats. someone with great leg action is going to come along and clean up. none of the current players play with leg action. awfully boring to watch the pros today.
inmhstn Gene Sarazan invented the Sand Wedge and Bobby Jones would of had one by the time the film was made. In the book Triumphant Journey author Dick Miller makes note of Sarazen giving a Sand Wedge to Jones. Jones is the best of all time. Very little practice and could handle any kind of pressure.
@@tomoconnor9606 This is 1931. I think Sarazen invented that club and used it for the first time in the 1932 British Open which was won by Mr. Sarazen.
@@kilmoturtles1 Right. It is a "niblick". At the time, a niblick was about 54 degrees in loft but it had no "bounce" as it was made like any other iron. Sarazen added the bounce in 1932 and the modern sand wedge was born.
How the eff does someone stand on a golf balls and buries it in the sand and hits 5 of within few feet of the green with a ...'not even a sand wedge club'. This is just crazy. Imagine this dude with todays clubs and balls.....
+Michael Maddox A mashie-niblick was often numbered 7 after the makers started giving clubs numbers in the early 1930s, but in fact was more like a modern-day wedge - typically about 45 degrees of loft. The niblick (8) was around 50 degrees, so something like a modern gap wedge. Then you had a spade-mashie (6) at around 40 degrees, a mashie (5) at around 35 degrees, mid-iron (4) at 30 degrees, iron (3) at 25 degrees, cleek (2) at 21 degrees and driving iron (1) at 18 degrees. Over the years the lofts of the 3 iron and down got closer together - typically in 4 degree increments - so by the 1960s a 7 iron was more like 40 degrees, by the 1980s it had come down to around 38 degrees, and today a 7 iron is considered 'standard' at 34 degrees.
I liked the name so much that I named my son Mashi. I hope he is good at golf, otherwise I believe I set him up to be ridiculed for the rest of his life. As long as nobody starts calling him Mashi mashed potatoes
