take it slow be sure that it is your big endsand not the top of you engine all engine are different we are showing you how we do it
any questions you have message me and i will be glad to answer as many as i can
The small end attaches to the piston pin, gudgeon pin or wrist pin, which is currently most often press fit into the connecting rod but can swivel in the piston, a "floating wrist pin" design. The big end connects to the bearing journal on the crank throw, in most engines running on replaceable bearing shells accessible via the connecting rod bolts which hold the bearing "cap" onto the big end. Typically there is a pinhole bored through the bearing and the big end of the connecting rod so that pressurized lubricating motor oil squirts out onto the thrust side of the cylinder wall to lubricate the travel of the pistons and piston rings. Most small two-stroke engines and some single cylinder four-stroke engines avoid the need for a pumped lubrication system by using a rolling-element bearing instead, however this requires the crankshaft to be pressed apart and then back together in order to replace a connecting rod.

Great video mate and lots of useful information. One point only, bearings get lube only on the inside face to the crankshaft journal not the outside. They are kept in place by crash (reason why torquing them correctly is essential) and with oil there you just increasing the possibility of moving out of position.

just acquired a relay 2.2hdi and it sounds like big ends, pulled sump, not a bit of play up/down or front to back, good clearance side to side, same on them all, but its vry kncky at the flywheel end, wondering if its the main crank bearings, or something odd with the dumb mass flywheel

Hi there, great video you have got here. I have seen a lot of people checking their big end clearance with plastigage... By measuring your new bearings with the old via a verneir gauge, does do the same thing? Are you just trying to make sure that the new bearings are the same size? Cheers

What happens if you find damage to the crankshaft on 2,3 or 4 cylinder ..after replacing new shells on no 1 cylinder.. bit of a waste of time...are you not better checking for damage on the crankshaft first

Nice video mate,I was planning to take the sump off my 1.4 AXP next weekend. When accelerating I can hear a light ticking noise,maybe the noise is coming from the hydraulic lifters/tappets. Could you do a timing belt vid if your customer is interested? Greetings from Croatia

hi mate thanks for the comment.yes it can be coming from there unfrotunely is hard for me to say exactly where is coming from. firs what you can try is to flush out your engine. the problem with doing a video on a timming belt is space it will be hard ti see what i am doing i will try to get a old engine and do it on the flood 4 you

Hi mate. Really need your help here. I followed your detailed tutorial, hats off to that. I tried replacing my big ends and i think i overtightened the conrod bolts. My crankshaft is kind of stuck and have to re-do the work once again. So my question is, should I slightly loosen all the bolts at one go so that the crankshaft spins again or should I proceed one by one, to loosen and retighten to specs? Million thanks for you help mate....

Hi mate you're going to have to be extremely careful you're going to have to check everything make sure the bear and you've got a correct make sure there is no damage on your conrods or crankshaft I would go through absolutely everything again if it is still sticking you have a serious problem and you need to find out exactly what's causing it impossible for me to say as I cannot see the vehicle

THE NEVERENDING TITCH hi mate unfortunately it's going to be impossible for me to diagnose a problem without seeing the car no one can do it but a few things to look out for take off your sump and see if your oil strainer is blocked you might have a problem with your oil pump you could have blocked oil passages in your engine

If the big end bearings have excessive play, does this mean that the main bearings are likely to be worn as well?
@mrman17
@mrman17 9 лет назад
toyo toe BIg end bearings tend to wear more often than, and before, main bearings. If big end bearings are left too long, the faster they wear and the extra gap between the crank and bearing reduces oil pressure, which affects other things like the main bearings. With some older cars (I'm on about earlier models of the original mini and the MK1 Ford Escort for example, they only have 3 main bearings, unlike newer engines that have 5. These carry more load and do tend to wear more. If you're in doubt, it's not a lot of extra work to remove the main bearing caps and inspect the bearings, and some times it doesn't cost a lot for a set of new bearings, so you could do them at the same time. Worn main bearings tend to make more of a "rumbling" noise under load or when revved, whereas big ends tend to make a knocking noise.

@thereferee5547

Also is it really necessary to send the crank away to get it plastidip and get the measurements for the bearings, everyone I’ve spoken too has said I’ll have to take the crank out n things?

Under no circumstances turn an engine without the timing belt being on you will get it completely out of time and you will destroy the engine

Dez Alan as long as there's no damage done on the bottom crank you should be ok if there is damaged on at the bottom crank you need machining oversize bearings and that is going to be expensive

hi mate unfortunately it's hard to tell through the video as the camera does never pick up the sound properly but if you have metal filings in your oil you need to check all your bearings make sure you haven't got Metal on Metal if you do you're gonna need more than the new shell bearings
