car timing belt removal on Volkswagen golf 1.4 petrol engine
do this at your own risk take your time always triple check your marks and triple check again use lots of tippex
it will be satisfying to do a major job and get it right and save lots of money so good luck and have fun
A timing belt, timing chain or cam belt is a part of an internal combustion engine that synchronizes the rotation of the crankshaft and the camshaft(s) so that the engine's valves open and close at the proper times during each cylinder's intake and exhaust strokes. In an interference engine the timing belt or chain is also critical to preventing the piston from striking the valves. A timing belt is a belt that usually features teeth on the inside surface, while a timing chain is a roller chain.
Timing belts must be replaced at the manufacturer's recommended distance and/or time periods. Failure to replace the belt can result in complete breakdown or catastrophic engine failure, especially in interference engines.[4] The owner's manual maintenance schedule is the source of timing belt replacement intervals, typically every 60,000 to 80,000 miles

Thanks for this video and the other 2 parts. Had a problem with my wife's Polo 1.4 leaking water from the back of the engine which I suspected was a water pump issue and after contacting local garages and getting told it would be 2-3 weeks before they could get it in for repair, I decided to do it myself. I've tinkered and fixed stuff on vehicles from time to time but thought I would search on Ebay to get some good solid instruction on how to do the water pump and obviously timing and auxiliary belts while I was in there. Very slightly different on the Polo as it doesn't have some of the things to move out the way around the engine mount and also doesn't have the second idler on the longer timing belt but everything else was exactly as this. Spot on can't thank you enough for this detailed breakdown.

This video saved my arse massively gents. Can't thank you enough. If anyone finds they can't remove the timing case on theirs because of the aux tensioner being in front of it but can't work out how to remove it, let me save you half hour n a lot of swearing, it bolts up from the rear, 16mm long socket on a long (10-12") extension bar, behind the exhaust manifold. It's easier if you remove the heat shield but not vital. Also, the rocker cover has the cams built in, so if its leaking, seal it while you're doing the belt cos you'll have to time it all up anyway. Thanks again lads, top video.

Great video for looking at what is involved before getting your hands dirty. One important thing is that the crankshaft bolt should be renewed as it is a stretch bolt and could break when torqued to 90Nm + 90 degrees. If the bolt breaks you are in real trouble.

Ok thank you, the top two toothed wheels haven't moved as they locked in position with the two pin locking tool. I put it in as a precaution.The old belts are still fitted, and it's just the crank that has slipped 4 notches when using the impact gun, and the tensioner did not appear to have been set up right. It was a project car someone else had started and couldn't finish lol! So bottom cover and old belts still on, just the crank that has slipped 4 notches anti clockwise.
@bodgitandleggitgarage
@bodgitandleggitgarage 8 лет назад
ok mate you have no problem then just take the old belt off but when you put the new one on make sure all the marks line up and the tensioner is correct spin the engine by hand as long as it does not lock you are fine even if the engine does lock when you are spinning it by hand you will not have done any damage just take the belt back off and realign your marks hope this helps thanks for watching

Thanks for this great series, saved me a lot of trouble and money. I have exactly the same car like you are working on in the video. But the timing belt snapped while the engine was not running, probably happened during starting. I am replacing the belt and hoping that will do. The cams or on time but the crank has moved. I can turn the engine and the cams freely so I'm crossing my fingers that everything is ok. Thanks again and best regards from Iceland ;-)

hello, the water pump bearings collapsed in result the fixed pin which holds pulley and pump together broke. this happened while I was driving car. when I opened timing belt cover water pump pulley came into my hand,but belt was intact, do I need to remove head to check whether valves are bend or not?
@jamesbarratt593
@jamesbarratt593 8 лет назад
If engine is running, or was running and you switched it off quick, you might like winning the pools or lottery, be lucky that as it's an interferance engine, that somehow you never bent the valves. Change the belt and follow this video to the letter, start engine and drive knowing you are one lucky sod. I bet the engine splitters thiugh or misfires, if it wven starts. The pistons come up into the area the valves open into, so really if waterpump broke, tension on belt would have gone and the cams came out of alignment and got smacked by the piston crowns. Or just fit waterpump, retension belt and try starting the car. You wont do more damage thats for sure.

You talk about lock the engine on some cars(french cars) . I have seen you lock the engine with a screwdriver in other video but dont understand why this is necessary . you spoke about the first you do is lock the engine with a screwdriver and mark with tipex before you doing anything else . Cant you do a video and explain more about this cars you have to lock the engine . You talk about take off startmotor and mark the flywhell . what happens if you dont lock the engine on this cars? . cant i take off crank pulley and set screw back and mark the common way . eneway it would very very fun and nice if you have time and talk about this in a video in the future . hope you understand my english And i dont forget to get my hands dirty / You rock and thanks for all videos you make .you teach me a lot .
@bodgitandleggitgarage
@bodgitandleggitgarage 6 лет назад
Hi mate it is vitally important to Mark everything you can when doing a timing belt because if anything slips you will not know where the marks are the reason why I say to lock the flywheel with a screwdriver is coz on a lot of French cars there is no key way on the bottom pulley the bottom pulley is free spinning that's why you need to lock the engine so nothing can move especially when you're putting the new timing belt on and getting the tension right this is when things can move if It Moves and you start the car you will need to buy a new
@laurencem7970
@laurencem7970 8 лет назад
Help, the lower crank bolt won't budge with impact gun, in fact the entire crank moved anti-clockwise and jumped 4 teeth on the belt. Click, click, click, click. The locking tool is in place at the top. Now I'm worried that the crank is not in the right position. The engine is out of the car, to make life easier. Can I put this right easily?
@bodgitandleggitgarage
@bodgitandleggitgarage 8 лет назад
first thing you're going to have to do is line up the original marks and see how far they are off and then unfortunately you're going to have to reinstall the timing belt so as long as you have not started the engine you will not have done any damage but you need to make sure the Mark so I line correctly otherwise you will do damage there's no easy way of getting the crankshaft bolt off you just need a powerful impact air gun people do use other ways but I do not recommend doing it as you can cause damage but if you have the engine out and your impact gun is not strong enough try and lock the flywheel with something and get a big breaker bar on the bottom crank pulley that should work hope that helps thanks for watching

Hey Leon, great vids been a subscriber for years. Was hoping you could answer a question? Using your diagram at 17:53. Once you've removed the timing covers and engine mounts and with the old belt in situ, when you come to lock / time the engine, say the timing tools and marks don't quite align possibly meaning the old belt has stretched and the engine has skipped slightly, how would you go about putting it back to OEM timing? I guess the crank wheel has timing cover mark so that one you just adjust to match the mark on the engine, but the top cam sprockets what would you do there? Any help appreciated. Thank you.

Water broke into two pieces and water pump pulley where timing belt sit went near the crank shaft pulley

+bodgit and leggit garage yes I was driving at 80 km/h as I heard a bang I stopped the car and meanwhile engine died on its on and I could see all coolant being leaked from the side of the engine

+Adil Noor if the engine dies on its own accord there's a good chance that valves hit the pistons but I can't be 100% sure the best thing to me bee do is just fit a new timing belt and water pump and start it up there's a chance you haven't done any damage no point taking the head off if you have if the engine doesn't start properly then take the head off that's what I would do in this situation

@bodgitandleggitgarage 9 лет назад
Ok if it wont let you turn by hand then you have a problem most likely at the bottom end you need to check all the shell bearings at the bottom end

as a mechanic I have seen a lot such a garages! Without going into a lot of stuff,one simple note! It was mentioned that the power steering fluid will be reused, now i wonder how much shit will drop in that "clean container" until it is underneath the car? Also at our place "air gun" we call "lazy tool" ,and we not throwing plastic covers around just in case that metal clips or o-rings come right off and latter everything is left flapping around :) sorry but for me it's wasted knowledge! p.s. you do not tell people that you mark pulleys yourself,coz i can see confusions and disasters happening. almost forgot... how hard is to put on jack some piece of rubber when you jacking against aluminium crank case cover???

Sorrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrttttttttttted! Thanks to your thorough video, I have sorted out my Polo 2000 1.4 16V (AHW) ... slight different in some points, but same principle, car seems to run smoother and idles nicer now. Only one thing I wasn't able to sort was the tensioner pulley, part number: 030145299F which is for the aux belt. No bloody idea how to put this in, I locked it with a pin and tried unscrewing it, but won't budge, wonder if you know anything about it mate.. thank you again! your vids are probably one of the best on youtube.
