this is how to remove a car sump on a 2003 Volkswagen golf 1.4 petrol engine
TIP IN VIDEO
how to remove a rounded allen key head bolt
how to remove a allen key head bolt with out rounding it
how to stop losing your tools inside the gear box
and lot more
A dry sump is a lubricating motor oil management method for four-stroke and large two-stroke piston internal combustion engines that uses external pumps and a secondary external reservoir for oil, as compared to a conventional wet sump system.
Four-stroke engines are both lubricated and cooled by oil which is circulated throughout the engine feeding the various bearings and other moving parts of the engine; and thereafter allowed to drain to the sump at the base of the engine under gravity. In most production automobiles, which use a wet sump system, this oil is simply collected in a 3 to 10 litres (0.66 to 2.20 imp gal; 0.79 to 2.64 US gal) capacity pan at the base of the engine, known as the oil sump (or oil pan in American English), where it is circulated back through the engine by an oil pump drawing, or "scavenging" from the sump's reservoir. This pump is mounted internally to the engine and is typically driven by the camshaft.
In a dry sump, the oil still falls to the base of the engine, but rather than being allowed to collect in a reservoir style oil sump it falls into a much shallower sump where it is removed by one or more externally mounted scavenge pumps and is pumped into an external reservoir where it is both cooled and deaerated. These pumps are typically belt-driven from the front or back of the crankshaft. Oil is then drawn from this reservoir by the pressure pump and circulated through the engine. Typical dry sump systems have the pressure pump and scavenge pumps mounted on a common shaft so that one pulley at the front of the system can run as many pumps as required by the design of the engine. It is common practice to have one scavenge pump per crankcase section and in the case of a V-type engine an additional scavenge pump to remove oil being fed to the valve gear. Therefore, a V-8 engine would have five scavenge pumps and a pressure pump in the pump "stack".

Great Video!! Used this to remove my sump off my 1.4 mk6 golf. Don't be fooled though, This is no easy job. If you round the head of even one of these bolts, you are going to have a very bad day. I covered my hex key with an old, thin rag to make the key a super tight fit into the head of the hex bolt then lightly tapped it with a hammer as per this video to make sure it is seated all the way before slowly applying pressure to break the bolt free. This reduced the key from slipping and rounding the head. the electrical tape trick worked like a charm!

Really fantastic video guys, I appreciated the quality of the filming (good lighting) and the good humour of the presentation style. I need re-seal the sump on my other half's Punto 188 1.2 16V so I'm watching a few vids to research. I realise this vid is for a dry sump (from reading the excellent description) so not really too relevant I guess, but an interesting watch anyway

Hiya brother. I've got a 4motion. I'm leaking. It's a cracked sump. I've tried the chemical metal and that doesn't work, so it's a new sump unfortunately. Are the principles of removing the sump exactly the same with this video with my 2.8?

Hi Bodgit. I recently bought an 08 plate Vauxhall vectra with the 1.8l VVT petrol in it. I did an oil change on it pretty much as soon as I bought it and found that the old oil filter had totally disintegrated as well as having horrible gloopy black oil. After doing the oil change, the engine has begun to develop a worrying rattle and diesel like sound when warm that sounds like it's coming from the top end. According to forums, the VVT phasers on these are a common problem and I was going to get them changed when I scrape up some money to do the cam belt (it's at 73K, recommended interval is 100k). One of the first things that I did was to clean the filters on the VVT solenoid valves but sadly that didn't help much. I've never seen the oil pressure warning light, though I had wondered if the crap from the disintegrated oil filter could have made it's way down to the pickup strainer and restricted it enough to cause reduced oil pressure but not enough to trigger the warning. My question is have you ever worked on these cars/ engines (z18xer) and if so, how easy is it to remove the sump and more importantly re fit and seal it again? Have you got any other words of wisdom, I'm worried about my engine but currently lack the means to do anything about it. :,-( Thanks.

hi mate the first thing I would definitely check is the oil pump so take off the sump and check the gauze to make sure it's not blocked also I would check the oil pump I have done a video on how to check it and check for damage that would be the first thing I would do because if you leave it too much longer you will damage your engine you might only need to clean the pickup or maybe just get a new oil pump which is not really as big a deal as it sounds let me know how you get on thanks

Thanks, cant do anything just yet because I've got no money and no good spot to put my car to work on it at the moment, but I think I'll go looking in the sump first when I do manage to get cracking with it. Unfortunately I've got a feeling it's going to be an exhaust off job, so could end up being a bit tricky to do without replacing anything. Thanks again for your reply and I'll let you know what happens.

Really great video, guys. Great detail and great tips to make sure you don't go wrong. I've got a VW Golf MK4 2001 and the oil pump warning light has started flashing at me. Can you suggest what the problem might be? On VW forums I've seen the issue could be the oil pump switch or the oil pump itself. No idea where to start investigating the problem.
@bodgitandleggitgarage
@bodgitandleggitgarage 7 лет назад
Lance Bolton hi mate it could be a few problems it could be the oil also could be the oil pick up in the sump is blocked can also be the switch but it also can be the oil pump if you can get an oil pressure gauge and put it on this one tell you what isn't wrong if you have enough oil pressure then it's most likely your switch if not it could be your oil pump
@lancebolton3698
@lancebolton3698 7 лет назад
Sounds like a process of elimination. I'll start with a pressure gauge and see what happens. Thank you for your help, I think you'll be heading from me again. Lance.

Just done this job. The 2 hidden bolts next to the gear box could not be accessed. A flexible camera showed that the flywheel was covering part of the bolt head. After some head scratching realised that the flywheel must have a cutout to access these bolts. Moving the car backwards and forwards soon found place where a 5mm t bar could get them out.

@bodgitandleggitgarage
@bodgitandleggitgarage 5 лет назад
Hi mate there is loads of different ways but like everything can take a long long time you are best off trying to use a six-sided socket you might be using a 12 sided socket which is not very good for this you might even need to drill it out and use easy outs and taps one of them things that just takes a lot of time and patience

@@bodgitandleggitgarage thanks for reply, sorry i should of wrote its a 5mm Allen bolt with a round head really hard to get at and i cant get the car high enough to get at it better, looks like gear box out just to sort out oil leak, now i know why they sold it..cheers.
@bodgitandleggitgarage
@bodgitandleggitgarage 5 лет назад
@@Hasdac the easiest thing to do there is to try and get a splines peace into a socket and then you can Hammer that into the allen key but you've only got one chance or what you can also do is dill off the head this will release the pressure and you will be able to screw it out providing the threads aren't rusted into the housing

I presume you do this job for a living.. Why can't you just buy a long 5mm ball Allen socket? Because a) you're damaging the head of every gearbox bolt you're taking off and b) you're just creating unnecessary work for yourself with the time taken and struggle to remove those bolts with your current setup and then of course having to reinstall... And when you do reinstall chances are you're gona strip the threads for the holes where those 2 bolts go because you won't be able to get the bolt in straight... I mean honestly, you're making this job a lot worse than it actually is. With the 5mm long allen ball bit socket, it's an absolute piece of cake.
