car timing belt removal on Volkswagen golf 1.4 petrol engine
do this at your own risk take your time always triple check your marks and triple check again use lots of tippex
it will be satisfying to do a major job and get it right and save lots of money so good luck and have fun
A timing belt, timing chain or cam belt is a part of an internal combustion engine that synchronizes the rotation of the crankshaft and the camshaft(s) so that the engine's valves open and close at the proper times during each cylinder's intake and exhaust strokes. In an interference engine the timing belt or chain is also critical to preventing the piston from striking the valves. A timing belt is a belt that usually features teeth on the inside surface, while a timing chain is a roller chain.
Timing belts must be replaced at the manufacturer's recommended distance and/or time periods. Failure to replace the belt can result in complete breakdown or catastrophic engine failure, especially in interference engines.[4] The owner's manual maintenance schedule is the source of timing belt replacement intervals, typically every 60,000 to 80,000 miles

Hi there, - Thanks for all the interesting VW info on engine timing, and the highly useful tippex tips on locking the camshafts etc. - - On another related VW task, I run a Golf 16V 1598cc, year 2000. Is it possible on this model to change the valve stem oil seals from the top, without removing the cylinder head? I needed a full head rebuild after an unexpected cam belt failure a few years back, probably caused by a water pump dying. The garage that did the rebuild replaced all the bent valves, and seemed to have done an excellent job, but ever since, the car has used much more oil than before, and there don`t seem to be any leaks anywhere? Possibly they might not have replaced the valve stem seals with new ones for some reason?, and this high oil usage is a bind in an otherwise excellent car. If they can be done quickly from the top, I would maybe take the job on myself. - I would greatly appreciate your advice. Many Thanks, from - Tony Boyle.

Some people say you should replace the bolts on the engine mount once you have unscrewed them. I heard some stories where the engine practically fell off on the street because of these bolts. Is that true? BTW, great tutorial, thanks!
@therealchayd
@therealchayd 5 лет назад
I also questioned this, but the official VW workshop manual doesn't say to replace them for this engine, I think you're only supposed to replace stretch bolts, but in this case they aren't torque plus x degrees. I agree with the stretch bolts, though - the last billy bodger who did my Audi cambelt reused the bolts and the head of one sheared off (luckily I noticed the engine flopping about before the other one broke!)

Hi, great video by the way. A lot of poeple might know how to do the work but it is a skill to make people understand it, you did a great job. My question is I have the exact same engine (1.4 S) and the belt failed while driving the other day. The top belt doesn’t turn whereas the bottom belt (the big one turns. I didn’t try to start it too many times but I had to see what was he problem, I have the belt kit and WP. Do you think the engine is damaged and the valves/pistons are bent now? How can I tell. I’m willing to have a go if you think it is ok! Thanks in advance.

Can you show how to do a full timing for a mk2? Mine has a bit sluggish throttle response. It's getting gas and I've replaced the transfer pump, main pump and fuel filter so it's getting gas, but when I step on the throttle it will slowly start to rev then it getting going. it also dies right after I've rev it and let it settle down to idle. 88 mk2 golf 1.8ltr 8v. Got one of these to do, and was intending on just going... bit 'o penetrating oil, stick the car in 5th/handbrake/mate on the foot brake, chuck the wheel on/car on ground, and have a go with the breaker bar... Seemed to work on my Impreza (tightened 130 nm + rust) can't be worse than that, right?! Or is it more that the crank shaft's made of glass/there's no way I'd have enough room?

Hi there,, recently had the timing belt snap on the same car as you have filmed. Was very low speed as was slowly reversing. I am going to first take the top off to reveal any damage to pistons / valves, if all good will then look to replace the belt. My question is, how will I be able to sync it correctly as surely the belt snapping will now mean it is out of sync with everything? Thanks Ollie
@bodgitandleggitgarage
@bodgitandleggitgarage 8 лет назад
hi mate unfortunately you will have done some damage to the valves but the piston should be ok all you need to do is line up the original timing marks and you will be fine hope this helps thanks
@OllieWarrenFisher
@OllieWarrenFisher 8 лет назад
+bodgitand leggit Thanks for the fast reply! I will inspect the valves when its all visible, but yeah as you say they are going to need replacing. Once replaced and engine put back together, am I right in saying the timing belt can simply be replaced and lined up to the original timing marks? Or is there a certain positioning the valves or pistons should be in before doing this, as the belt snapped when the engine was last run? Thanks for you help.
@bodgitandleggitgarage
@bodgitandleggitgarage 8 лет назад
+Ollie Warren-Fisher oh you have to make sure is before you put the head on the Block make sure the pistons are in the middle of the Block because some of the valves will be open on your cylinder because the cam is in it and then just line up the original Marks and you will have no problem
@ivanmagd

Well, that sir is one cracking video tutorial, thank you so much. I have a problem with my Bora 1.4 16v having loud knocking noise coming from the engine and I cant determine where it's coming from. Knocking is too loud for tappets, some say it can be coming from oil pump chain. What do you think? I can film this noise and put it on youtube. Would you consider filming tappets change on 1.4 16v petrol. Thank you!
@bodgitandleggitgarage
@bodgitandleggitgarage 6 лет назад
ivan magdelinic hi mate the first thing I would do is take off your sump and see if your oil pick-up is blocked if there is a lot of lumps and bits you could have bits of old oil stuck preventing the oil from circulating properly
@ivanmagd
@ivanmagd 6 лет назад
Yes, I will definitely take down oil sump to check for oil pump chain damage and will check for pick-up blockage as well. Thanks for the advice! Will report outcome...
@ivanmagd
@ivanmagd 6 лет назад
Hi, it took me a while but I finally managed it. It took me a few hours to finish all, I removed the sump, check the oil pickup and everything was clean. I took the opportunity and changed the big end bearings. They had a lateral movement but no up and down prior to the change. After the change, there is exact same lateral play. I've put new 10w40 oil and filter. After assembly, the sound was the same, same knocking sound. Now I know for sure that Knocking is not coming from big end bearings and I should move on. It cost me around $30 to change bearings and oil and it is not a big deal. I'm thinking now to disassemble top part of the engine to check for bad tappets. Thanks for any advice! Respect, Ivan
