One thing that was missed that makes the scene with the drinks better is: Vigo clinked glasses with his son but didn't drink his, he sat it down and poured another. Showing he did not support what he was toasting to or what his son had done.

One of my favorite scenes is when Viggo first finds out about his son stealing John Wick's car all he says is "oh" and then hangs up the phone. He doesn't cuss about how much danger he is in. The filmakers leave it up to the audience interpret what he is thinking with his facial expressions.

I think Viggo knew how things were going to end from the moment he got the news. His fear solidified when he called john to no response. This is also why he went and "hired" Marcus. That wasn't a "by the papers" contract. He went there to give him a death sentence. Viggo knew Marcus would probably never kill John. So he pretty much went and told him very subtlely "kill john or i will come back and kill you". Marcus said yes because he knew that wasn't a "you can say no if you want" meeting. And helped John only when he really needed him while pretending to still follow his contract. That's something not many people mention But marcus was dead from the moment Viggo knew John was going to kill his son. Viggo prepared his revenge beforehand.
@LA_HA
@LA_HA 3 года назад
All of this was Viggo's fault. His communication style isn't for situations like this, in which he is not dominant. He really, really, really should have hired a high level arbitrator or negotiator to contact John Wick about what happened. Instead, Viggo comes off unsympathetic, awkward, clinical, and empty. This was No way to begin communication with Wick, who is a reasonable, but extremely injured man; all because of his fool of a son. Viggo messed up big

When Viggo looks down after telling his son what he witnessed John do to 3 men in a bar (with just a pencil); I believe he looks down because Viggo in all his power and stature, knows that John is 10x more powerful than he is and will stop at nothing to enact his revenge. I saw this as foreshadowing the events that would later come and Viggo eluding this information so his son can truly understand who John is.

Considering the rules of the underworld (high table) in this franchise, John Wick was double crossed after fulfilling an impossible task for Vigo to get out of his "profession". Vigo's son and his grunts kill the final gift of his wife, steal his car and beat him up after he declined the son's offer of purchasing the car. It wasn't only about the dog and the car. It was about honouring the rules of "contracts" (Wick not being in the business anymore) and betrayal for not telling Wick where his son was and on top of that getting in his way, even trying to kill him, although all his recent achievements were accomplished on top of Wick's successful impossible task (Vigo states that in a particular scene how his branch got so successful, "Wick's past service being the foundation"). John took everything from Vigo which he had achieved due to his service as a consequence of the betrayal. His anger is a result of everybody dishonouring the meaning of the dog and the car which both were a gift from his passed wife. The only thing in his life which made it worth living.

The differing drink types add another layer when we realize and remember that cheap stuff burns more often than not, but more expensive drinks, like "top-shelf" stuff, fruity drinks, and wines, tastes more like "drink-drinks" rather than flat out alcohol so its easier to consume. Cheap stuff and harder liquors burn more ESPECIALLY when coming up, like say, if being vomited out from a hard blow to the chest areas. Such as an area where the organs currently holding said cheap whiskey are residing when you get punched.

I feel like he was looking at his son's neck when he was remembering the "pencil" story because that's probably where John Wick stabbed those men. He even imitated stabbing his assistant in the neck when he turns around.

Hi! I just discovered your channel and got hooked by your TV/movie analyses instantly. Marvellous work! I was wondering if you ever watched Margin Call, or whether you'd consider doing an analysis on the senior partners' emergency meeting scene where every actor displays a lot of micro-expressions in-between the lines, especially Jeremy Irons

I'm rewatching the scene. When he mentions the bar and the pencil, and he looks down, I think that's more of a trauma response because people remembering personally traumatic events express shame and guilt in the same way Viggo's eyes showed

I never thought of vigo looking down as him trying to remeber. I thought of it more as either trying to size up his son or more of a thousand yard stare type thing we're he is actually still in a little shock from what he saw.

There is another thing, when Vigo toasted with his son but he didn't drink afterwards even poured into a different glass, in some European countries like Russia this is a sign that he doesn't agree with the subject of the toast.

1:32 Viggo doesn't drink his glass of whiskey when he clinks his glass with his Son it means Viggo doesn't support what they toast for or he doesn't respect his Son or dosent like what his Son did and then he proceeds to open another bottle of whiskey and poured on another glass bottle and still did not drink the glass of whiskey that he clinks with his Son.

Vigo´s son never did a pacifier beheavior because he never knew how messed up was his situation, when he realized, he was dismissed. His behavior was of a child who did everything he wanted and never had real consecuences.

I'd also say Vigo's associate is also realizing just how much trouble the idiot son just brought down on them. He may care for Vigo, but, he's having an "Oh SHIT!!!" moment. He realizes this is bad bad bad news.
