I just realized the only reason Joker threatened to blow up a hospital was so he could talk one-on-one with Harvey Dent. He knew they would evacuate the hospital, so he snuck in and waited for everyone to evacuate so he could talk to Harvey without any interruptions.

@@enigmatruecrime Yeah. As a guy with a natural eye for body language, I find it fascinating to watch actors play their roles. From phoned in performances to genuine feelings and intent. I find that not many actors can actually let their body react in a fully natural way. Most of the time, i know they are acting the body language and it's almost never perfect. What I believe is missing from most actors is the ''energy'' behind the language. Heath does a great job of displaying the joker's ''energy'' through the movie. I love the mob meeting. The acting was mostly very good but what struck me the most in that scene is that behind the joker's confidence, he was actually very afraid. the easiest way to tell is how he leaves the room. That screamed '' I need to get the fuck out of here, now''. Heath acting the joker superbly is one thing. Heath adding and hiding that fear so well under the joker's persona is another. True mastery. Usually when I look under the acting, i see the actor, that time, I saw the joker's human alter ego almost shitting himself in fear.The possibility of dying that night was very much there but in his mind had to be done.

There was nothing about the Hospital Scene that was “improvisation.” Everybody on the set that day (both cast and crew) knew all about the Heath Ledger’s/ The Joker’s repeated hits of that detonator button. That was planned, and it was deliberate. The so-called ‘delay” was a pre-planned gag - to allow for safety concerns. Computer modeling had even been used to ensure nobody would get hurt, and nothing would go wrong.

@paladinheadquarters7776
@paladinheadquarters7776 3 года назад
Correct. I’d say Heath could have improvised the movements joker did, but the bomb not going off, and the Joker stopping was in the script.
@williamzebub3252
@williamzebub3252 3 года назад
As I understood it, starting around 6:29 when Joker's reaction shifts to "Was that it?!" that's where things went off script. Ledger was expecting more explosions and they didn't happen, so he improvised the fidgeting and playing with the detonator. His jump at the next explosion was a genuine reaction of surprise, and then he runs off and the hospital gets destroyed.
@KingFurgo
@KingFurgo 3 года назад
@@williamzebub3252 That is incorrect.. It was all planned.. Think about it, if a real building that was actually exploding suddenly stopped as multiple tons of TNT didn't do as they were supposed to, then everyone on set would immediately run because a massive explosion was malfunctioning..
@williamzebub3252
@williamzebub3252 3 года назад
@@KingFurgo Why would they run if they were already a safe distance and something they were waiting for finally started happening?
@decimation9780
@decimation9780 3 года назад
@@KingFurgo The initial blasts were priming charges, they weren’t the actual demolition charges, just small explosives set up the the crew. The demolition charges did fail to go off when they were supposed to, however the demolition team made sure to use the necessary amount of explosives, not more than was needed. And due to how those kinds of charges are placed, generally placed into support pillars and the like, the explosions themselves weren’t the real danger, it would’ve been any debris and shrapnel that would be the true danger. Heath Ledger's reaction was improvised on the spot, it wasn’t in the script.

Harvey Dent has always been an interesting character. The coin flip absolving his conscience of guilt makes sense. But another reason is: justice is blind. It doesn't take sides. It's fair. What's more fair than a 50/50 chance from the flip of a coin? The coin represents justice, fate, deciding who lives and who dies. Harvey, himself, is simply the instrument that justice uses to enact its will.

Also, Joker used a revolver for this scene because the hammer was more accessible. Whether it was a single or double action doesn't matter, because the hammer can be manually cocked for both, although it's unnecessary for the double. When he holds it up to his his head, the hammer is already cocked back so he can hold it back with his finger, preventing the gun from being fired. That makes me believe he wasn't certain Harvey wouldn't pull the trigger, and was even more surprised Harvey decided to leave it up to chance. Despite the dialogue in this scene, I do believe Joker had a plan and that he wouldn't succeed if he was killed so soon. While he has no qualms with dying, Harvey killing him would mean that Batman wouldn't have to, which is what Joker wanted all along. He already broke Harvey, and didn't need to push him or his image even further away from his former persona.

I particularly love the detail of The Joker keeping the hammer pressed, the gun was not going to fire even if Harvey pulled the trigger. It was all a show. In many ways The Joker had his own means of using deception and theatricality to get the desired emotional response from gis targets just like Batman.

Awesome video! You could react to something from The Alienist (TV Show starring Daniel Bruhl, Luke Evans, and Dakota Fanning).

If you look in the special feature s of the movie, you'll find out that the explosives not going off was always planned to happen

4:34 Joker's finger in stopping the hammer from striking, meaning if Dent pulls the trigger, the gun won't fire.

That thing about the hospital blowing up is actually a myth. The ending scene went perfectly according to plan. The reason why there was a delay on the final big explosion was to make sure EVERYONE got out in time for any falling debris and things of that nature. They had one shot at making this scene. They wouldn’t let this happen. They have a documentary all about that scene actually and it’s pretty fun to watch.

If you don’t mind me asking, where did you learn how to analyze body language and are there any books or videos you would recommend to get started with analyzing body language?

The explosion scene being improv is a rumor. It was actually blown up, and had tons of bomb squad and those sorts of people on set for it. Had the explosive not gone off as expected, every single person in the vicinity would have been evacuated VERY quickly because the charges would be live and ready to blow, but hadn't yet.
