The Try Guys recently lost one of their members, Ned Fulmer, after he was caught cheating on his wife with an employee. Shortly after, the other three members, Eugene Yang, Zach Kornfeld and Keith Habersberger, made a video explaining what happened. But what does their body language reveal? How do they really feel about the situation? Are they hiding something? Find out now!

My first impressions; Eugene(left) is PISSED/radiates intense anger, Zack(middle) is sad/hurt, and Keith(right) is disappointed but has a better handle on his emotions than the other two

spot on .... Eugene is steaming, although his face and eyes are so flat it may or may not be that it's a stoicism reflected in a cultural basis - he's obviously American but I haven't the faintest idea what generation. Yes and that is why he is pissed! And not so fast to give Ned a break. Plus the mention of internet of being hard on woman is on point. One thing no one is discussing is Eugene saying he himself had an intention to leave try guys so he could pursue his own career further.. but he wanted to make sure everyone was financially sorted before he did. First impression: I’ve watched their video so many times and I find it so refreshing because they are so genuine. They have control of their emotions, however they are still allowing themselves to react is genuinely as possible. Zack looks like he is on the verge of tears but is desperately trying to find some humor just to get by. Keith looks like he’s just done with the whole situation, and would rather walk away and not have to deal with it again, but Eugene is probably how I would look if I was in that situation, I related the most to him, and he is certainly hurt and ready to break a nose if he could.

I wear glasses most of the time and I know that I do the weird face scrunch to push my glasses up all the time, even when I'm not wearing glasses. I became very aware of it once I started being in Zoom meetings and looking at my own face. So I could see Keith doing the face scrunch before speaking as a grooming gesture, like okay I'm getting ready to speak and I don't want my glasses to distract me or I want to make sure I look more presentable.

Eugene's manner of speaking reveals a special kind of rage of someone who has a personal connection to the wrong that has been done. Others in the comments say he's the only one from divorced parents so it makes me wonder if his mother was cheated on. He seems incredibly hurt and angry in a very personal way. With Keith, I wonder if he's an older sibling... I'm the oldest and I've made that face when my unbearable pain/anger/discomfort leaks out when I'm trying to put on a neutral or normal front during something awful. Possibly glasses adjustment but with it being right before he has to discuss something uncomfortable it makes me think theres a little more to it.

I feel Zach’s laughter, after it was explained there will be branded videos showing up in a few weeks, is him reacting to the fact they’ve taken the actions they have: firing, cutting ties, speaking out, but then still having to show new videos that will make it seem they’re negating everything they’ve just done. He’s reacting, thinking about how ridiculous they will seem showing new videos, though filmed pre-scandal, and how absurd it will appear in light of their current actions and words. It’s a no win situation and he’s realising it.

44:50 - When this leaked and was gaining traction, a lot of people on the internet were attacking both Ned and the female employee he had an affair with. Most likely, the Try Guys talked with their lawyers/PR/HR team and it was recommended to let the public know NOT to blame/attack the employee since Ned was technically her boss. They also included Ariel (when they said "family members") so that the public doesn't go harassing Ariel about this whole debacle.
@kourtnie3609
@kourtnie3609 Год назад
This is understandable but also kind of wild. Alex is just as guilty as ned is. Why are there no consequences for her? She gets to keep her job (legalese I know. I get it) and the guys are publicly defending her/asking for mercy where she’s concerned. People aren’t allowed to express their disgust in her behavior but are for ned? 🤔🤨
@jennyleona5703
@jennyleona5703 Год назад
Agreed. I think there is always a huge danger of the woman being labeled “a home wrecker” and blamed for “seducing a loving husband from his family.” In this scenario, Ned had the authoritative power as her boss, and apparently has the tendency to flirt and push boundaries. So the “don’t go after the women” bit is most likely trying to get ahead of that nonsense.
@jennyleona5703
@jennyleona5703 Год назад
@@kourtnie3609 there’s a power dynamic issue at play here though. He had a responsibility to keep things professional- not just for monogamy’s sake- but because it exposes the company to potential legal repercussions. If Alex kept her job, it’s because her actions didn’t jeopardize the company. Ned’s did.
@kourtnie3609
@kourtnie3609 Год назад
@@jennyleona5703 that’s kind of a good point. If ned was the one who pursued her then I guess she would be entitled to a little more grace than he would be. But at the same time it takes 2 to tango. It feels to me like the guys are trying to erase her part of the scandal/pull her out of the narrative, which doesn’t seem fair.
@DawnDavidson
@DawnDavidson Год назад
@@kourtnie3609 no, I don’t think they are trying to erase her part. He was her BOSS. HE had the power, and he abused that power. It’s also quite possible - likely even - that they know more than we do about exactly what happened, when, and why. We know very little, actually. Does she also have a family? What kind of support system does she have? Are there racial and/or age overtones as well? Did he tell her some story, like he was gonna leave his wife? Did she express remorse and he didn’t? Did she think they had an open relationship? I certainly don’t know any of this (though others might.) I do know that women, on the whole, catch FAR more disapproval than men for doing the exact same things. I find it refreshing, actually, that these guys are bothering to consider these power and gender dynamics, and NOT automatically trying to excuse his behavior and throw her under the bus. That happens WAY too often. This situation has to just completely suck for everyone involved. I hope they are able to recover and move beyond all this. I’ve enjoyed their work, what I’ve seen of it. Hopefully everyone, especially the wife and the employee, are able to find some healing and peace.

I love the Try Guys and have followed them since they were at Buzzfeed. They've worked SO hard on their channel and brand, and also all have personal endeavours that they've no doubt had to put on hold and may also be at risk now this has happened. Eugene is very close to Ariel, and I think he's extremely angry that Ned has done this to her. When Keith did his first 'disgust' face, I thought that he was uncomfortable at Eugene's obvious barely repressed anger, so it's good to hear another opinion on it.

A theory on the Keith “smile”- this is something I do at times, myself. Because of the shape of my face, when I scrunch my face like that, it pushes my glasses up without me having to reach up. He may be trying not to bring his hands up, so he’s adjusting his glasses another way.

This was an incredible video to watch! I also think it's interesting who looks at who at what time. For example a couple of times Zach looks over at Keith when he's looking for support or Eugine when he's trying to show support for what he's saying. However, the others don't really do that except when they're wrapping up at the end and maybe are not as focused on remembering the script. I think it shows their relationship with each other as a unit and also that Zach is seeking more reassurance from the strength or protection from the other guys.

45:51 Zach once told Ned that he looked up to his marriage as the ideal. I think it's in the lie detector video. It seems he really looked up to Ned so that would account for how hard he/they are taking all of this. Also a key component of their brand is authenticity. They try stuff and we trust them to be honest about their experience. it might be considered a major blow to their brand... They may be protecting that as well...

The discussion around minute 24, about Eugene shaking his head. In the last moments of his head shaking and looking way to his right of the camera, he does two quick blinks, that almost look like blinking back tears. Obviously he has heard this information before, but could it be that he is so intensely mad/sad/disappointed in this, that he is still being emotionally affected? Like many traumatic things in our lives (in this case, the betrayal by a trusted friend and colleague and empathy with everyone hurt by this action) might still incite that “primal” emotion. The blink might be an eyeblock, too, but I would guess it would be to hide how deeply this is affecting him emotionally. We all know that hearing about family trauma 10 times, does not make it less sad for the family member and that processing the info and processing the emotional baggage, might have two very different timelines?

At a work event we played two truths, one lie and had some interrogation time. It was so much fun to observe the behaviour and body language and use the things I learned from you in real life. regarding "as we go through everything" I also think it's possible that it's a lack of control and I don't want to do this. He has to go through the legal process because it impacts the Try Guys business. He has no control over it and has to endure it. I guess it's also effecting him on a personal level because they probably had a close relationship and he might be disappointed, sad and angry about this situation which is why he wants to push that topic away from him to protect himself and feeling overwhelmed.

I haven't watched the whole video yet, but the part at 42:40(time stamp) where you're talking about Zack laughing, I don't think it was because of something funny, it felt so sad and full of grief, like he was laughing because he didn't know how else to respond. And I feel like Eugene's responds was disappointment and anger due to the fact that they still have to put out those videos due to contractual obligations. But I feel that if he is responding to Zack laughing, it's because he felt his grief and still can't believe Ned would do something to cause such devastation to them and everyone involved. Edit: Now I've watched the entire video. My take, specifically on the part about smiling(48:10), it is not unusual for someone to smile when they're sad, uncomfortable or angry, I do that. It's like a default thing(at least for me) just because I have no idea what other expression to use without looking like I'm completely full of hated and/or like I am about to break down and cry. Which seems to go along well with how they're feeling, they also seem very in tune with each other and how/what they're feeling. My last point is that it's no one's business how they're handling this situation, especially because of everything we don't know and they should Not be expected to share every minute detail. For me personally, if I find out you not only hurt me but that you did it on purpose, we're done, no second chances, especially if you also hurt my loved ones in the process.

From what I understood, in California there's a labour Law that if a boss has a romantic relation with an employee, this can put in trouble the entire Company because other employees can sue for damage the Company for the andavange that employee had on the workplace from that relation. And also the employee he cheated with can sue because of the role of power of the employer that can force them into an affair. In fact Ned made clear the affair between them was consensual. So I believe the Company has something like a duty of control in avoiding such kind of stuff. It is strange in my point of view as in my country it is not rare for people to have affaires in the workplaces, but the Californian Law totally makes sense to me. And I believe expelling him from the Company was what they had to do in order to protect the Company from law suits.

Regarding Keith's face scrunches and after analysing myself a little, it could also be a way to make his glasses go up without adjusting them with his hand. I think it is also possible that the interaction where Zach laughs and Eugene shakes his head, it could be they filmed something that is ironically funny to Zach. Around 43:15 when you're talking about Zach's laugh and Eugene's headshake, I know EXACTLY why Zach is laughing, because it's what I do. When something is shocking or (more likely in this case) just an unbelievable cluster****, you laugh because you can't do anything else. The situation is a bit overwhelming, and it feels like your options are to either sink down and lose yourself in being upset and angry or to laugh about it. People think I'm nuts when things are going wrong at work. Keith I feel like I also understand, because my brother is the same when things are bad. He kind of shuts down and doesn't let loose a ton of anger or sadness, he just gets focused and tries not to let out an inappropriate reaction, which results in a bit of a "blank" look.

The Try Guys image is all about being wholesome, non-problematic, and drama free. This scandal is anything but and has gotten nationwide coverage in all the newspapers and much of it has been inaccurate. Brands wanting to do business with a brand (Try Guys) that includes a family guy (Ned) is now going to pull out. Brands wanting to have nothing to do with drama are going to pull out. Anytime it's like "well I've fucked this up and it's completely beyond my capabilities to fix this" or "I know I have no chance of doing this successfully" but he has to keep going anyway, he tends to do that smile and laugh thing. It's like the physical embodiment of "if I dont laugh about it, I'm going to cry." I dont think he thought anything was actually funny. As someone who have watched The Try Guys since their second year as a Buzz Feed group. Eugene's reaction is absolutely no surprise. He has continuesly shown and said that he has a hard time trusting and letting people in. However, in the last few years he has become more open to letting people in - and he's expressed that this is partially thanks to the other 3 guys in the group and their friendship. So no, Eugene didn't just loose a friend and business partner, he lost someone he trusted. One of the few people he truly trusted and knew how hard it is for him to trust. Ned helped build Eugene's confidence in other people to the degree where he could come out to the whole world as gay. Ned KNEW all this and still smashed that trust to pieces. But not only did he do something to break Eugene's trust. He also put everyone in a really bad situation that could, potentially, break the whole company or at least damage it. To make it even worse, Eugene is also friends with Ariel and has had a lot of childhood struggles due to his own parents getting divorced when he was a kid, so this probably feels even more personal to Eugene. As for cutting Ned's whole income? That's not really a thing. All the guys have side business and honestly, even if he didn't, Ariel has a good job and can take care of herself and the kids, so if they struggle due to his shitty choices, then she should throw the man on his ass so he can reap what he has sown. I have no sympathy for Ned in this.

Again, to protect their company. They can't be seen to blame her. It's a bit ingenious of the analyst to say he doesn't know what its about. Women DO generally get a lot more negativity online than men; that some people have actually tried to blame Ned's wife for his cheating is abhorrent. I've watched The Try Guys for years, and it's always been evident that Keith is a genuine, forthright, good guy. He's not a liar. When he said they had no idea what was going on and were just as taken by surprise as fans, I knew immediately that his body language was conveying something other than deception. He's embarrassed and disappointed in himself, not only for not picking up on signs that something was amiss but for misjudging someone he's worked with day in and day out for years. He feels like people are probably judging him for not knowing what's been going on right under his nose, and that makes him feel ashamed.

I think Keith had suspicions... He seems like he's grilling ned, e.g. this looks like a guy cheats on your wife type of salad. But I don't think he found anything conclusive so he's disappointed in himself.

@@Umeshukitsune he likely thought anything that appeared suspicious was just his imagination or not as it appeared because it was Ned, after all, wife guy. I've been in that position, finding out a close friend was doing horrible things and wondering if people thought I knew or if they suspected me as well. It really messed with my head and made me feel embarrassed and like an idiot for a long time.

Around 38:00 when you’re talking about Zach seeming to have the hardest time with the decision, I think the reason Zach is expressing stress was because he was the main person who was having to handle all of the legal aspects & talking with lawyers every day. On their podcast he talks about how stressful & exhausting that was for him & it seems like all of those feelings are coming up when talking about making the decision to let Ned go.

Oh, that would double-suck! I've occasionally been in situations that were emotionally troubling to me - downright devastating sometimes - but it was my job to deal with the aftermath. Representing the company, gotta be professional; signing legal forms, verifying paperwork, giving endless interviews and official statements. Oh man, that can *seriously* break a person! I hope he made it through intact and is okay.

I don't think there's an undertone to his message with being kind towards women. I've noticed that whenever there is a cheating story and the guy cheats on his partner with another woman, everyone tends to go crazy over the affair partner, calling her names, trying to doxx her, sending death threats. So perhaps this employee already started receiving a lot of hate. It's the idea that she broke a home and she's the one to blame because she knew he's married....but then the guy also knew he's married and he still chose to stick his D where it shouldn't be....

Really great video. Lots of insights. Most noteably, I think, is that a part of your analysis supports a common theory. At 25:35, when Eugene long pauses after "This.", lots of people, myself included, think that that was because he had to wait for the teleprompter (or whatever they were was reading off of) to scroll to the next line. This could be somewhat humorous. So your analysis at 31:58 that Keith's weird facial expression was a reaction to something making him laugh lines up perfectly. It makes total sense!

Ned’s wife is also an employee of the company and they’ve all worked with her for a long time, so I think that might add clarity to some the nuance that’s going on. I think they feel protective of Ariel on top of everything else.

Yes I’m very confused about this entire thing. I’ve never heard of these guys before and spent the whole video trying to figure out why the other guy was fired. I get he was cheating on his wife but even though I despise infidelity and it’s wrong that’s between him and his wife. It’s not something any smart company would get involved in, it’s his personal business. I could understand possible fear of a sexual harassment issue but it’s obviously a consensual relationship so that’s not a real danger. What he did was wrong but unless it interfered with his job performance (again no idea if it did, I don’t know these people) getting involved is walking into an absolute minefield.
@ar_m
@ar_m Год назад
@@whiteglovewatches9908 The reason Ned was removed is because the relationship was with a subordinate. He is one of the bosses and the woman is not. There's a power imbalance there and, even if it was consensual, the woman could claim she was coerced/felt she couldn't say no without losing her job and sue the company (and likely win). It's a huge no-no for a manager to date someone they oversee. It's a giant mess that Ned created that threatened to destroy the entire company. The issue isn't that he cheated, it's who he cheated with. If Ned cheated with some random person it would tarnish their wholesome image but, it likely could have been handled differently. Since Ned chose to date an employee, the rest of the guys had to call in lawyers and an HR company to help them navigate this so they had the best chance of not losing everything. I hope that helps clear it up a bit. 🙂

My initial thoughts from the clip line up with what most fans are saying. Eugene is angry, Zach is trying not to cry, and Keith looks exhausted. Edit for further responses- Zach shrug, probably a mix. Mostly doesn't want to go through everything, probably also admitting there's no way to go through "everything" but for simplification purposes, go with it. Keith breaking eye contact, I think he's ashamed with himself for not seeing clues. I think they're sincere that they didn't know but I think at least two of them are feeling some guilt. (I say at least two because it's hard to read anything other than anger from Eugene.) I think the "no" is disapproval of Ned's action/disappointment in Ned, and again, shame. Eugene headshake while Keith is talking, agreed, show of disapproval (of Ned.) "Aggressively pissed-off" made me laugh. Bang on! Excellent insight into WHY he's mad. He has had to fight for his identity and this does potentially cast doubt. It's personal for all of them because this is their company, their friend, their employees, but the other two probably aren't worried about what the fans will think of them as individuals in the same way Eugene is. I agree Zach ultimately agrees with the decision they all made but probably struggled most with the moral decision making because yes, that's his friend. He doesn't want to hurt or lose anybody and he's still battling with the inner conflict of this was the right decision but it sucks. I took Zach's little laugh at the branded videos part as an acknowledgement that it's awkward that they're committed to branded content at this awkward time. I agree Eugene's again disappointed in all the ways this impacted what they've done and possibly was thinking Zach's laugh wasn't appropriate. I think Eugene's being protective of the women involved mostly for Ariel's sake and also a little because no matter what Alex's consent level was, there's an unbalanced power dynamic there in Ned's favour. It's possible Alex is claiming it wasn't consentual. Knowing all the little things fans have nitpicked and brought out from old podcasts, it sounds like Alex has a history of being a party girl I wonder if Eugene sees vulnerability there. I think Eugene feels MORE protective of Ariel and angry about that relationship breaking because of the kids involved and the fact that he's a child of divorce. He also might be urging for everyone to go easy on Alex because Alex's fiance did immediately break off the engagement, so no matter her fault level, she has also lost something major. To respond to the cutting off Ned's income: 1. I'm sure he's still entitled to some amount of money, between residuals and severance, etc. Possibly bought out as owner by contract. But also, Ariel (Ned's wife) is still an employee of the company at this time, so they haven't left a family with small kids without an income.

Yes to all of this. Also, Ned is likely to be the least financially hurt by his separation from the company. Not just because he'll likely get some form of buyout from the other three Try Guys (adding insult to injury), but also because he was already wealthy going back to their Buzzfeed days. Ned came from a well-off family, went to Yale, then worked in finance. That dude's the epitome of the saying, "he was born on third base & thinks he hit a triple." He wasn't just an owner & manager - he was the Try Guys' head of HR! Being removed from the company isn't a punishment per se; rather, it's a legitimate consequence of his actions.

The four of them and their partners are absolutely a chosen family. Due to how interconnected their lives are, it would be complicated and devastating regardless. Adding on the legal strain of a power imbalance that could threaten the livelihoods of their families and the families of ALL their employees is just overwhelming.

I LOVED Eugene's response, it doesn't make me feel scared or threatened, I find that kind of clear moral compass very comforting, and a great leadership quality. It's non-compromising. It's discerning, sharp, clear, firm and boundaried! I find the seeming moral-mush of the other two, to be unnerving, spaghetti- noodle- spinlessness. I'd much rather have Eugene in my corner if I was the cheated on wife than the others who snicker, squirm, and feel bad for the cheater.
