This movie is a romantised version of what actually happened in year 1905 London and year 1910 Penang. In year 1910 Penang, Sun Yat Sen was attending the Penang Conference(庇能會議)he was almost got himself assasinated by a Manchu loyalist. In reality, the Manchu loyalist was arrested by the pro Chinese Nationalist, and no one died.
I wonder why these kung fu masters are not seen in the mma octagon, for example... are they too good or maybe they haven't heard about this type of fights? 😀
That fan is actually made of cast iron with sharpened tip, so it functions both like a sharp weapon when opened and a blunt weapon when closed. You could actually see him slice off the hooks when open and use the blunt force to hit others' neck and head when closed. Effective and deadly.
The material is irrelevant, because physics does not allow ANY thin metal to do what that weapon is shown to do. So, there must be something outside of physics responsible in the story.
Ahmad Tawakkal acttually no, in the movie, this guy just lost all his will to live due to sense of guilt and grieving for his family and lover, so he pretty much fight to die, to live his last as a head scholar of martial art
This movie is not about the action. It is about the sacrification for the sake of ending feudal system in China. However, take a look on China in 2022, those heroes’ effort is in vain.
I want to say the General tried to avoid a fight with the Beggar in respects of his bravery and skills. Also, at the same time he would prefer a fair fight. Seeing as the Beggar was already so injured perhaps the General didn't see it as a fair fight. From the way the Beggar looked, the General would've easily killed the Beggar.
@@wymmyw8744 Right I see what you're saying. I'm not an expert on Chinese history but I am familiar with the Manchurian takeover but the point I was making was the beggar knew by doing that.. it would trigger him. He wanted to hold them off as much as he can.
to be fair he did try to just walk past the Beggar without having to finish him (Probably out of respect for his might?) and even pointed his sword at Beggar telling him stop. Well after all that he got his pigtail grabbed and cut off and i think i read somewhere that is one of the greatest insult to a Manchu man so its kinda justified how he got pissed and acted like that.
It was Yuen Woo-ping who said, essentially, “you have to make the character have a reason to fight in order for the fight to matter.” I’m paraphrasing of course, but out of all the martial arts fight I’ve seen in my life, this one has to be the most heart-wrenching because it encapsulates by the imagery and emotion alone, what it means to sacrifice-& likewise, displays what YWP said, entirely. Even when this master was down for a majority of his life, he chose to take a stand. Does his training precede him? Absolutely. But one could even argue that, because of his actions (or lack thereof), and ignorance/stubbornness (intentionally or not) throughout his life-they may still not be without consequence. In this case, his enemy brought their fight with advanced technology (hooks)-a bane to his “old ways” of training. The beauty of his training is the fact that he can adapt whilst remaining impartial to the pain, though it shows…and keep in mind, the mission. One could even say that what he did could be a commentary on what happens when a “bigger threat” comes forth, i.e. weapons to just hands and feet; bow and arrows to swords; guns to arrows, & so on. In an army, there can be great strength in one of its meekest members (esp. in battle). For this master, and many others who sacrificed themselves, they did the equivalent of jumping on the frag grenade to save the battalion. & if that isn’t the epitome of honorable, I don’t know what is
The plot is not like that. The character had incest with his stepmother at a young age. Then his father and stepmother all committed suicide and the whole family was destroyed. So he became a wandering beggar. That metal fan was his family's weapon, representing the family's glory. The old businessman bought the fan back for him, and he took it to fight for the revolutionaries and give his family a decent end. And he was freed from guilt. The real power of the fan lies in the sharp-edged blade. But he only opened it once at the last minute. It means that he committed suicide.

@@全世界无产阶级联-c4m your answer makes sense...i watched the movie a long time ago...i remember it as his father killed his step mother and disowned him after he had sex with her
In the Qing dynasty, the hair means the loyalty to the government. In that dynasty, numerous ppl died because of not willing to make that pigtail as the Qing government would kill those ppl. Therefore, cutting his pigtail is the greatest humiliation to him who devoted his whole life to the government.
The beggar was actually one of the Imperial Scholars For Martial Arts back in those days where the Imperial Manchu Court held contests to determine the champions of their lands. According to the movie story background, the beggar got the title at age 17 but subsequently fell into disgrace, shame and self-exile after he lusted after his father's newly-wed wife which destroyed his entire family and ruined his fortunes. The iron fan was his ancestral weapon but his skills were spectacularly different from most of the other characters in the movie because to be an Imperial Scholar For Martial Arts, he had to win numerous rounds against some of the greatest warriors from the Manchu Dynasty before the Imperial Manchu Court could formally bestow the title to him. If he did not waste his life drinking and smoking opium to punish himself for his sins, he might have easily fought off all the assassins and even the final villainous Manchu General as well.
난공쿠로 I've actually heard of both versions, Wu Zhuang Yuan and Wu Shao Cai, my pin yin is probably not correct for the latter. I speak cantonese, and watch cantonese movies quite a bit, rather than Mandarin. so the pinyin is not my strong suite. Also, I didn't see anywhere in the movie showing that the Manchu General was educated by the British.
@@danpt2000 I believe you meant Wu Xiu Cai 武秀才. To put it shortly, Zhuang Yuan(状元) is first place in the national examination, and Xiu Cai(秀才) is commonly referred to all scholars who took part in the examinations, regardless of rankings. Hence, the differentiation is important. First place and any examinee can be very very different in capabilities.
what a sad fate this master had.... imagine being rich and a talented/respected martial artist and end up in a life of such pain where ppl just see a useless begger.....his death was actually a coup de grace...he stood up and fought for smthing 1 last time.... which also ended his hell
Superb action scene, showing a man who knows he's gonna die 99% but doesn't back down nevertheless. And rightfully so, he doesn't win after being slashed, stabbed, disemboweled and so on but goes down a righteous man. HOWEVER.... ...being the disgusting Gwai Lo i am, would back him up with brute and honourless firepower, just to even the odds a bit.
If u watch this whole movie. Its more than just good action but a very sad story behind it of how each hero even Donnie Yen sacrificed themselves for the sake of independence. I was tearing up as I watch them fighting for freedom. Its a very sad and emotional movie if you get the whole history behind it.
They’re not really his friends. In fact out of all the “bodyguards”, he never actually met the others before. He only showed up because the old master requested him in return of his heirloom. He didn’t asked about the purpose or cared about their cause. The return of his family’s iron fan was the return of his glorious self and past
Here's what was going through their heads: 1:25 Thanks bro u da best....... 1:26 Don't mention it 1:29 Wait hold up, is that a fking fan? Nigga u crazy 1:30 It's a fan? well....fk me 3:05 nuuuuuuuuuu not my favorite shirt!! 5:22 NIGGA I JUST GOT MAH HAIR DONE!!
These movies while appearing over the top are not to far from the chaos that involves the martial arts in China's history. For example and this is only one of the civil wars that took place back in the past in China. The most destructive civil war in the history of mankind, the Taiping Rebellion (1850 - 1864). More than 20 million people died during the Taiping Rebellion, history’s nastiest and most destructive civil war. The war lasted for two decades. To try and give this perspective, about 600,000 people died during the American Civil War, which was raging at the same time. The government in power at those times, used the martial arts to their advantage. The communist government was more effective in this endeavor. It incorporates the martial in all forms of media. It gave the schools a choice work with them or be annihilated. Guns are also hard to get in China so disputes were often settled by opposing martial art muscle. I also have n doubt that there were and are still masters of these arts that could very easily take on a dozen or more opponents and defeat them.
I think the enemy leader did respect him by not killing him first. But when the enemy hair was cut, I think it was a very big mistake. His respect was paid by insult.
what? thats a hateful thing to say! too much hate in the world anyway Manchester now London! should be ashamed of yourself! 29 people murdered in the last 2 weeks because of hatred and you come away with those obnoxious 6 words! I wont even click on a thumb as it belittles their memory!
That’s the hair of Manchuria. It’s a symbol of the Chinese people saying: yo this bitch believing in mythical shet and the warlords have fucked us enough. Yeah we gonna end this. More background these are assassins are trying to kill Sun yeet sin.( sorry for misspelling ) The guy holding them off intentionally filp the assassin off the buy time.
it is call ki strengthening, a fantasy wushu technique that fuse life force energy in your body to other parts, make yourself become much tougher (again, fantasy)
They've been around since the 70s, probably could include the 60s, it was just wires and shit back then. I do have to say I'm quite disappointed so many people think this is the most awesome fight...it really isn't much.

That Iron Fan was probably a weapon bestowed by the Qing Emperor to this character, because he came out on top of the Imperial Martial Arts Examinations, becoming Champion fighter. It may not be the most deadly weapon, but it has symbolic meaning.
5:18 me when I swear I'm about to tear up some cereal at 2 in the morning then come to the realization that ain't no damn milk left. I be mad, confused and hungry all at once.
One example that prove to us how great you are in martial arts but against plenty of armed people you will defeat at the end. 1 hero can't afford to fight plenty of government armforce.
This could have been very good. But the camera placement and transitions were horrible. The continuity was broken at several places. Very poorly done. I can't look past this like some of the rest of the commenters. It kept pulling me back out of the movie way too excessively.
Wonder if he had been in his prime and kept with his training would he have lost? Maybe to the last guy but the assassins nah I think not at least not that badly wounded
