13:20 The reason that they have the green ground wire in the control box is because BX cable is not always properly grounded because it is a circular spiral cable and the older housings can lose contact between their contacts at the end of the line with the clamps so it is a good idea to run an actual green ground war in my humble experience.
Sounds like what this guy really needs is a 2 zone controller. However, I'm guessing that someone who won't spring for smoke alarm batteries will definately not spring for the right controller plus wiring and installation.
I think he'll pay for the batteries, my guess is replacing the batteries is too complicated for him, there are lots of people out there who are very happy to pay someone to change the batteries for them; Steve could make a little money doing the replacing and have customers remember him for taking care of their problems.
12:22 - Of course they're putting oil in. Probably just wasted an entire tank overnight! That vintage thermostat... So much nicer to look at than the Generic Beige Boxes we have today, and it looks pristine. Looks awesome with the wood paneling. They could probably save a ton of money in heating costs with two independent zones, they're heating the 2nd floor until the 1st floor satisfies, and some of the 1st floor heat is moving up there anyway.
That thermostat looks exactly like the one that I installed in my Mother's house in the 1970's. It had a 24 volt step down transformer for the clock. The clock would turn down the temperature at night and turn it up in the Morning.
I am not an HVAC or boiler technician but that being said I throughly enjoy you videos. I love troubleshooting and have learned a lot from watching you. I may have missed it but it didn’t appear that there was a bulb on the controller you pulled out? Thanks again for your videos there great.
Excellent video again Steve! FYI the reason that old mercury bulb thermostat has four wires is that two wires power its clock, while the other two are for the temperature T T wires.
@@bradmironik6137 the clock not only kept time, but it also had a night time set back. You get the set back when you separate the tips for the temperature and you move the clips on the inside dial of the clock to select the time to set back the thermostat. My parents had that thermostat back in the seventies.
@@staryjdido918 No they don't make them any longer. And no they don't have Mercury T Stats anymore. I still have 3 Mercury T Stats that work and I prefer the old type. They are safe , just don't break the bulb.
Ebay has them, both new and used, new old stock Vintage New Old Stock Mid Century Honeywell Chronotherm T882A 10131 Thermostat Condition:New - Open box Price: US $55.00
@@NY411Info Worked well, i have seen here in Australia these old thermostats are they still keep going, So much modern stuff these days is NOT built to last.
You are a good man thank you for sharing your videos with us I have fixed alot on my furnace and my sisters you have saved us alot of money and for that I will purchase some of ur products you are the man
If I remember correctly, 2 of the 4 wires on those very old timeclock controlled thermostats are continuous power for the clock. Also, possibly the 2nd bx might be due to the original installer might only had 2 conductor when really needed 3 conductor for power, neural & switch leg....
The NEC calls for bonding the ground wires in BX (MC-metallic cable) despite the metal jacket. MC cable without the green ground wire no longer meets code.
The only problem with setting it up on a low limit is that it will waste a lot of fuel during the summer. That is unless the owner remembers to turn the boiler off in the spring and back on in the fall. Highly unlikely me thinks.
Steve's keeping ole crusty going. Seen several videos on this one boiler. Steve saved that boiler when he took the leaking tankless out and changed the gasket. Not many people would have done that.
Those mercury filled bulb type thermostats are banned now in the uk. But you still find them being used. They were mains controlled so would have four wire control.
That aquastat is able to maintain temperature or can be used for cold start boiler. It has a high and low limit and differential settings but if need be for cold start the low limit can be turned off. Can’t expect a man that does AC , Gas, Residential plumbing and Oil to know everything.
I find that it’s interesting that they’re almost all Beckett burners. Up here in Canada we don’t have that many of them and many are Carlin or Riello units…
In that BX, code requires a separate ground wire. Steve should pickup some batteries at Sam's Club and have them on his truck to sell to chirping smoke alarms. I've found Sam's stocks fresh batteries unlike many places. It's just another service for his customers.
Hands down the absolute Best tutorial Best video i have watched PERIOD My friend you are a genius when it comes down to Boilers And Fuck yes I appreciate you ! have a great day Respect Matt Rior
@@projectfreedom9510 I thought they had Natural Gas , but the Natural Gas generating plants the water for the turbines was freezing up. So short on electric power.
@@davidnull5590I've heard several channels mention them. Probably good stuff. Rather not go to the big scary orange box if I don't have too. The blue castle is no better than the kings in mid-evil times.
@@Boga217 --- They usually have good prices and a nice selection. I've bought a lot of stuff from them, they usually are much less expensive than any big box store and most wholesaler. Delivery is fast. The only reason to use a big box store is instant availability, otherwise I can wait two days. Ask your delivery guy, FedEx or DHL, mine said they sell tons of stuff in my area. If you do work it's convenient to easily buy the stuff you will need by the box or case. They also stock boilers. Their search index system isn't the best, sometimes you have to search multiple names or descriptions to get what you want.
@@davidnull5590 Don't forget the letter, which denotes the spray pattern. Home Depot, and Lowe's don't really offer a wide variety of nozzles in the store's I've shopped. They're usually over 1gph in size, and usually a wide spray pattern (70-80 degree), which would be no good for a burner that calls for a 60, or 40 degree pattern.
Is that New Bedford???? I just stumbled upon this video because I am looking for a heating guy.... Do you come out to Taunton/Raynham? How do I get your contact information?
