Join Caleb from Brownells in the second installment of our Bolt Action Rifle Build Series. In this episode, we jump right into assembling a bolt action rifle.
We start by installing a Proof Research barrel in a 6.5 Creedmoor Zermatt Origin style action. Caleb introduces the Short Action Custom Barrel Vise, an innovative tool that simplifies the process. He also covers the use of an action wrench, torque wrench, and other needed tools.
Next, we go into the intricacies of barrel installation, discussing different barrel types, including the Savage small shank style with a barrel nut. Caleb demonstrates how to properly apply torque, check headspace, and ensure everything is aligned correctly.
The video also includes a detailed walkthrough of installing a trigger mechanism, using a Timney trigger as an example. Caleb explains the importance of correct installation and safety checks.
Finally, we head on over to installing a muzzle device and dropping the barreled action into a chassis. Caleb uses the MDT HNT 26 chassis, showing the correct method to install the action.
Throughout the video, Caleb emphasizes the importance of precision and attention to detail in building a reliable and accurate bolt action rifle.

A tip when installing barrels: after twisting it on the first time, take the barrel off and twist it back on again. Helps distribute the anti-seize/grease more and gives you more accurate torque values.
@5jjt
@5jjt 7 месяцев назад
Remember, wet torque values are less. Generally, 20%-30% lower when torquing wet.

Caleb, i love your videos and they've helped me more than once....i would like to mention that you should put your barrel nut adapter at 90 degrees to your torque wrench though to keep from adding additional torque. If you put the adapter in line with the torque wrench you are adding leverage length which increases the applied torque

Awesome video. I went with a McMillan A5 stock for my build as Im not a big fan of chassis. But the one you selected for that is pretty slick and if I ever do a chassis build I think I'll go with that.

Caleb, it may not matter much, but it is best practice….Please place torque wrench 90 degrees to crawfoot barrel wrench. Proper torque is achieved.

@andrewteal3016
@andrewteal3016 6 месяцев назад
Caleb - quick question. Will most chassis fit a barreled action using the Savage nut or do you need to find a chassis specific to that? I'm thinking chassis clearance just forward of action being an issue with the nut. I like the idea of the nut because if you're a volume shooter - no lathe or gunsmith required means minimal downtime once a barrel falls off. A way a guy can shoot PRS type matches without gunsmith expense.

This has me thinking the 6.5 grendel rifle search for a deer/hog inside 200y build can actually be an affordable build myself. How about some items listed in stock for this build? Much respect on the suggested items by anyone. I like to do self stuff, but this is a first for me.

It would be really neat to build, there’s only 1 problem! Just the action itself is over $800 !!! So by the time you built this! You damn near could’ve bought a 50BMG rifle!
@Pyreleaf
@Pyreleaf 7 месяцев назад
Leaving aside that I wouldn't want to be within 100m of some sucker who bought an $800 .50BMG rifle when they pulled the trigger, a complete Aero Solus is listed for between $1800 and $2500 on their website, whereas a Barrett will cost at least $10k and more likely well in excess of that.

For everyone complaining about the price: Howa 1500 barreled action from Brownell's: $440 KRG Bravo Chassis: $400 That's a sub $1000 rifle and requires nothing more than simple hand tools. No vice, action wrench or gauges needed.

Why is everyone afraid to show "gunsmithing" except Brownells?

Because they are not dependent on the monetization of the channel for income.
@carlk1183

My understanding it has to do with Monetization. They don't get money on their videos if they violate RU-vid policy. Notice Brownell's doesn't have any commercials (that's a good thing)?

Isn’t the barrel-nut adapter on the torque wrench working like a “crow’s foot” where you should have the gadget at 90 degrees from the torque wrench handle? The way you used it you’re essentially extending the handle and throwing off the torque measurement - unless I’m mistaken and the tool already compensates for the torque recommendation?
@MrPiimpslap
@MrPiimpslap 5 месяцев назад
That is correct, you torque at 90 degrees.

@bobvizza5490 I think the builder was just trying to show the steps but wasn't focused on using a savage shank barrel. He warned against using shouldered pre-fits but ultimately that's what he built. I have Origins and now a Solus too and use proofs prefit without issue.

@dylanwithsuff
@dylanwithsuff 7 месяцев назад
You put on a barrel nut at 13 minutes then when you come back it’s in the barrel vice after it’s removed from the barrel vice(19 1/2 minute mark)it doesn’t appear to have the barrel nut you put on 6 minutes earlier. Other Zerrmat barrel installs I see either no barrel nut or the barrel nut get left on after installation. Sorry if I am just completely misunderstanding something here.

What about a field guage??? Go guage, no go guage but no field guage. Im lost...
@brownells
@brownells 7 месяцев назад
You don't need a field gauge for this, and no new build should ever need a field gauge. A field gauge is only used if your no-go gauge fails and you don't mind shooting with much lower performance. A field gauge means "no" but still technically safe.
