In this video we explore details of a great Jon Bon Jovi song: LAY YOUR HANDS ON ME - through the magic of vocal stems we get a different perspective on how these Bon Jovi hits were put together!
Bon Jovi - Lay Your Hands On Me - ISOLATED VOCALS - Analysis and Singing Lesson
Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora wrote “Lay Your Hands On Me” with such a distinct gospel vibe that it even inspired Dolly Parton to cover it as a gospel tune in 2014.
Can you think of any other rock songs that were ever covered as gospel tunes? Let me know in the comments!
As we look at Jon’s isolated vocals from the track, one of the things we’ll look at is how it was written in a distinctly lower register than the early stuff and why.
We’ll also take a deeper look at the awesome production of the tune and how well thought out the songwriting and note choices were.
Check it out!

I think all the classic era of Bon Jovi is amazing they were one of the bands that survive the grunge scene with records like Keep The Faith and These Days the songwriting stuff and the production give us one of the best albums of the history.

Ken, you have to check out BJ’s These Days album from 1995. It’s their best album. Most mature songwriting, darker, and featuring Jon’s incredible range (unfortunately for the last time). It’s truly perfect from start to finish, and that’s spoken by one of BJ’s biggest fans; I know every one of their songs from their entire catalogue. Their subsequent album Crush is great too but These Days is one of my all time favorite albums by any band.

My thoughts exactly. I thought I was the only one because These Days is always left out in every way imaginable. Slow decline after These Days for me, then they really dropped off a cliff with Lost Highway, culminating in the dogs shit of 2020.

Listening to this again 2 years later... I remember at concerts Jon would say "Welcome to Jonny's church of rock n roll" and I think it was just before this song.

This was the opener for their show in Austria in 1996. Instead of the drums, an Austrian traditional brass band played the intro to Lay Your Hands On Me. Honestly, I've never heard a brass band sound so cool ever since. 😄

I'm huge Bon Jovi fan and I love Jon Bon Jovi so much for everything he did in his life. Since their first album to 2020 he wrote every songs on each album with Richie a lot or alone or with someone else. Like you said he's an hardworker and his songs are so well written. His songs are so true and powerfull and beautiful, he know how to choose the words he's fantastic. His song helped me so much in my life during hard times and stuff of life. I'm so greatful for their music. Jon is the best such a great singer, songwriter and human being I dream to meet him one day. He's so generous with people and with his fans always kind and nice. He never considered him to be a rock star or something, never pretend to be better than anyone else, he's a simple man who sing and he's a great dad and husband. I know that a lot of people said bad and mean things about Jon voice and it's really sad because yes his voice has change but it still great and it rock it's just different. He's the same guy who wrote amazing songs with a lot of meaning, their 2020 album is a masterpiece to me. And he still work a lot on his voice like he always did and he always try to be better for his audience. And at almost 60 years old he still the greatest !! I love him really much. 😊 Everybody should listen Bon Jovi.

Dolly Parton liked this song she actually asked them if she could make this an actual gospel song. They agreed and it sounds cool.❤ Thanks for more Bon Jovi. I will always love them. I still love Jon's voice. Newer songs I am obsessed with are Who would you die for, Luv Can and Shine.❤ He knows how to write.❤😊🤘🏼I know I sound like a total fangirl.😂

This song is on New Jersey album which came out in 1988 and, yes, was produced by Fairbain. This one and Slippery are the pinnacle of their career in the '80s. So this album and this song has nothing to do what would happen 3 o 4 years later: I mean the Grunge movement. Until 1990 Bon Jovi were incredible huge in America. What you refer to Bon Jovi in Europe and his efforts to recover his fame in America happened around 1993 when they came back with Keep The Faith (new sound and image). During the '90s they did excellent with Keep The Faith and These Days and was in 2000 when they released Crush and their another hit single It's My Life when they recovered their status in America

I was there for the shooting of the video at the Tacoma Dome. They opened the show with it (obviously) and then halfway through the show they stopped, went back snd toweled off, put their costumes back together and did the song and the whole opening over again to make sure they had two full takes. So this song has always had a special place in my heart.

Ken, I've been blown away with this episode of IVA and your version of "Lay Your Hands On Me"! It's epic!!!! Thank you very much! There is no better voice than yours. Jon doesn't have as powerful voice as you have but I love the way he sings a lot. "New Jersey" and "These Days" are my favourite BJ records. i can't agree with you more! Jon deserves lots of respect for his professionalism, hard work and ethic. And defenitely he is not only a pretty face! Although IMHO he is handsome as hell! The whole band, all the musicians are incredibly talented and very professional especially Jon but if it weren't for their amazing songs they would've disappeared from music scene a long time ago. And believe it or not You and Jon have a lot in common. High work ethic, professionalism, passion to music and respect to your audience/fans. You are AWESOME, Ken!!! Thank you. I'm your fan! Bon Jovi is an incredibly talented band. You could even argue the most talented is Dave Bryan- Juilliard trained Tony award winning ..... The talent runs so deep. We know that jon and Richie were the songwriting powerhouse, but I'd be interested to know how much contribution David made to the music and construction of the songs. The guy wrote an award winning musical, which I imagine is no easy task!

I think Jon's energy in the song rubbed off on you, it's an awesome song and it's wonderful that music can energise us like that. It's great that you're a bon jovi fan, they were the first band I ever loved. You've given me a greater appreciation of the lyrics and just how talented Jon and the band are. In my album ranking I always put New Jersey over Slippery When Wet. Many of the Ppl who say Slippery was their best work haven't listened to their entire catalogue. Hardcore fans who have listened to every song on every album for hours on end rate new Jersey, keep the faith and These Days very highly. Indeed my own ranking would be: These Days, New Jersey, Faith and Slippery. Nice work Ken, could listen to 100 more bon jovi reactions.

Loving all these analysis vids of Jon Bon Jovi Ken! As my favorite vocalist growing up, and as a Christian, I too noticed all the Biblical references in a lot of his work. Not always in support of the faith but for the most part using it to emphasize a point. "I wanna be just as close as - the Holy Ghost is." But the most Biblical song I think he's written so far is the track 'Amen' from the 2013 album What About Now. If you think it's about lust, you missed it. Outside the Bible itself, this song is probably the most descriptive writing about the sanctity of two people becoming one.

Bon Jovi as a band dont get nearly the respect they deserve. Unlike most other bands that have been able to stay around over the decades they dont just rely on their past hits and basically just do Greatest hits tours year after year. They actually still get in the studio and write new music to atleast attempt to keeps new hits coming. Now I wish Richie and Jon would have been able to clear up their stuff so Richie could stay in the band because the magic is those 2 together and I dont think the band has had what would be considered a hit since before Richie left. I think Have a Nice Day was probably the last rock hit and Who says you cant go home was more country. But anyway the way the band has been able to reinvent itself over the years to still be relevant says alot for how hard they work and love what they do. They really should be considered up there with rock royalty like the Stones, Beatles, Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith. And if you look at it Bon Jovi has kept putting put new music and stayed relevant almost longer than any of them.

I love this song. Loving the mini bon jovi tour. Would you be able to find the isolated vocals for the newer stuff and see and explain what techniques he is using now to use what he has left of his voice as well as he can?

Kudos to you for that little speech about Jon Bon Jovi and his work ethics. Yes, his voice is dwindling these days. But he has always been a workaholic and has busted his a** to get to where he is.

Jon was always hard working man but he was also a good businessman. When he realised second album was not an example of commercial success he decided to employ Desmond Child. One of the greatest songwriters in a rock history. Im pretty shure Ken knows the story. I know you want to say positive things but it would be nice to do video with Jon Bon Jovi current live performance from era 2018-2019. It will be pretty intresting to understand what is happening with his current voice. To me it sounds now like he has problems with breathing and a few other things, not only throat and vocal chords. It might be neurotic issue with his whole body.

Unfortunately, Jon became a smoker when he tried to be an actor for the movie Moonlight and Valentino. He hasn't quit since and it has done a huge number on his breathing and vocals. Why would you ruin that kind of gift with smoking?

I think "Lay Your Hands On Me" and "Bad Medicine" are the songs from the "New Jersey" era where Jon can improvise the most vocally in today's live performances and not have to sing *every* note the way he did on the recording, because those songs rely so heavily on backing vocals in the choruses.

Hey Ken, great explanation of "chord separation." A prime example of this, and another instance of a singer in the early stages of possible vocal loss on the high register, is Ian Gillan singing Hot Line (Black Sabbath's Born Again album). Ian hits an insane amount of repetitious chord separation screams. Time permitting, I suggest you check it out, especially near the end of the song. (if you can get past the ridiculous album cover and the sacrilegious album title)

Good video. Tico doesn't get enough credit in the band. With Richie Sambora and Jon in the band I guess it is easy to be overlooked. The vocals are not as what I thought they would be, the choir girls really boost the perception of what you think Jon is doing. Great dissection. Im going to Vegas to Sammy- the VIP tickets baby!

Been suffering with Ashma for a while now to an extent that I've had to place my singing on hold.....Its so frustrating. I read an article on Bon who has suffered with Ashma all his life and his son having the same! Furthermore I read his son sings and has a band called 'inhaler'......been such an eye opener. I've checked out his son and let me tell you, he sounds just like his dad. If you want a blast from the past, you have to listen to him.

I personally think Johns voice was at its peak in the “these days” era back in 1995 some of the songs on that album I think John shows so much emotion like in something to believe in, you can hear his emotion in his singing and that’s what I think is his best voice and especially in the song These days I think you should do a video on some of the songs from that album because they are pure genius song writing and lyric writing.

Totally agree Liam! It's my favourite bj album actually. These Days the song is one of my favourite songs as well. They're really in story-telling mode on the entire album and it just shows a maturity that wasn't there before. I've always thought that these days may have had the greatest sambora influence.

He does alot if the belly type singing to hit then hold notes! This is his bread n butter but it also translates to that very distinc coached or lessons sound, and at least for Rock the unpolished raw character driven bluesy soulful grit sound can't be beat!!! Jon sounds great but you have Jon sing this then have Steven Tyler, Axl Rose, or Robert Plant sing it and its a day n night difference really good to GREAT!
