In this video, the Queen-A-Thon continues with THE SHOW MUST GO ON - ISOLATED VOCALS! You've got to see this.
Queen - A - Thon - THE SHOW MUST GO ON - Freddie Mercury - Isolated Vocals - Analysis and Tutorial
In “The Show Must Go On” Freddie Mercury was able to muster the strength to put together one last unforgettable, spot-on performance before he passed.
What other legendary performances can you think of that were pulled off in the most unlikely of circumstances? Share with me in the comments.
Brian May was apparently concerned that Freddie would still be able take on the song in his condition but Freddie would put out what I think was one of his better high range vocal performances.
As we look at his isolated vocals we’ll break down the straightforward approach he used for the song and how he literally gave his all for the performance.
Be sure to check out the versions of the tune from Sara Loera and Dino Jelusick here:

The actual last recording of Freddie singing is the beautiful, heartbreaking "Mother Love" which, after the first 2 verses, Freddie said he wasn't feeling well and would come back and finish it. He never could. So Brian sings the last verse and you can hear the pain and sorrow in his voice. If you've not done that one, check it out. And, btw, I LOVE the long list of Freddie's isolated vocals-- "Under Pressure" being one where there's no other recording of it that showcases Freddie's tremendous power and range. I've suggested some isolated vocals to other reactors and not one has paid any attention. Their loss, but it's a loss for a lot of viewers, too. So thank you for doing this. Love it! And love your videos, Ken.

@@kentamplin Ken I'm impressed you could hit those B4s on the spot like that for a Baritone! Loved your analysis, I think you are absolutely spot on, on everything. This song always makes me so emotional.. You can tell he's basically saying, yeah I'm dying and it's becoming more visible, but the show must go on. The fact he could still sing like this so close to the end is insane. What gets me most is though, it's obvious music was in his soul. Been so sick, most artists would stop singing, but not Freddie and continued until the very end. I remember reading an article with Brian may saying a lot of his last songs he had to have long breaks and lay on the floor because of how sick he was, truly is heart breaking.

@9:18 "My soul is painted like the wings of butterflies. Fairy tales of yesterday will grow but never die" is also a genius reference to a very, very early Queen song, My Fairy King: "Someone has drained the colour from my wings , Broken my fairy circle ring", about an imaginary world he created with his younger sister when a child. The book-ends of his life.

What’s more amazing to me about this song isn’t just Freddy’s ability to sing like that from his deathbed but the mental fortitude it took. How many people could sing about their own impending death like that without getting emotional and choking up? He was a true artist and professional to the end. ❤

Great job! I've always kind of been..distantly *aware* of Queen, mostly from Wayne's World and A Knight's Tale, but I only recently starting paying attention and really *appreciating* them. They're all so great but Freddie is just so easy to fall in love with. His energy is magical. And now, any time I watch or hear anything related to the time leading up to his passing, I get teared up, and I'm not one to cry easily! This was no different. His strength and passion, even at the end of his life, is nothing short of amazing. RIP legend

Do more of the Innuendo/Miracle album stuff, his voice and singing was always spectacular, but in the last few years, after quiting tour and such, his voice got rest, and his technique just got even better, due to also his sickness, he probably didnt just shout every song his lungs out, he probably did sing it more lighter on purpose due to his sickness and also to keep his voice in shape the more he can.

It’s amazing how well he sang even as sick as he was - iconic artists seem to pull out the reserves and find a way to still perform - part of what makes him truly great . I recently watched a video of Elvis performing “Unchained Melody “ very close to his death - he could barely speak but when he got to the piano somehow he sang great and nailed the song - soon after he died . The greats always seem to find a way to nail the performance regardless of what is happening in their lives - they go to a place where the music is all that matters

This song has always sent shivers down my spine and it represents a time when the band were really focused on recording as much material with Freddie as possible. He told them that he needed something to do more than ever during those last moments. Also, your choice of t-shirts haven't gone unnoticed lately! Ken Ken Ken! I loved this analysis of one of the greatest rock singers ever. The isolated vocal was amazing as Freddy did not need his voice to be enhanced by instruments or dubbing. He was all natural, all talent. He can’t be replicated nor forgotten. I bought a home months before his passing and got a second male cat from a shelter. I named it Freddie in honor of Freddie Mercury. Than Freddie died and my new cat turned out to be female. ( fitting given Freddie’s life style ) Anyway. You do him justice. You have an excellent voice yourself. Aside from being a vocal coach, do you have a band? I would love to hear it if you do

I had to revisit this vid. Seriously having re-listened to this I realize with his astounding performance, this song really doesn’t need instrumentation. I could listen to just Freddie sing this A cappella all day long. It is actually… perfect. And I must say your vocals in this video are also quite good. Dare I say amazing.

You take my breath away really highlights Freddie's vocal ability (studio version is a total eargasm, the live at Hyde Park is also special)

This video was sincerely amazing, i just loved your deep analysis of the lyrics. Now, thinking about what you said in "my soul is painted" part, the music video kinda shows that, Freddie happily shaking people's hands in a white suit. I'd he happy if you did Who Wants To Live Forever too.

Wonderful vocal. I remember an interview with producer, David Richards, who said Freddie was singing so effortlessly during these sessions having stopped touring and all of the excess. He said it was like recording/watching a choir boy.

Freddie asked Bryan for a farewell song !! And Bryan wrote the best song, imagining what Freddie was feeling when the end was near. Wonderful vocals !!

This song always makes me a bit teary eyed. It makes u take a look at your own life. Live Aid cemented him as the best frontman.

I thought the voice got thinner too, as time wore on for him. Imo, there is evidence of this on 'the miracle' album. He prob just didn't have the breath and stamina of years gone by. The man was a machine though. In the face of adversity, he produced some of his best performances. Brings tears to my eyes listening to this track. I don't shy away from it though coz, well.....life goes on. I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when it was announced on the radio in 1991. Sad day but, by most accounts, he lived a lifetime 😉

I love your tutorials so much. I could post this on pretty much any one of your videos. You really cheer me up and give me confidence. Even with sad subjects like this one. I'm sure Freddie would take your praise as high affirmation from one great singer to another. Thanks for doing what you do. ☺

Excellent Ken! You should take a "look" at Mother Love which, according to Brian was the last song that Freddie ever recorded, in fact he wasnt able to sing the last part and it had to be recorded by Brian. Cheers!!!
