Hey there, fellow Boners! Dig the video? Be sure to share it around and stuff. Spent a million years on it. Gracias. Be sure to like that bell and subscribe to that comment section! Also, sidenote, originally I had a whole segment written about this game's INCREDIBLE soundtrack, but I had to cut the script down. Luckily, the composer _himself_ made a RU-vid video about his creative process on the Boneworks OST, so check that out! It's great! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-x6Sxvyuk6rw.html
Fun fact: One of the developers for Boneworks said in an interview that they were hoping that the game would feel outdated in the next few years. They just wanted to set the foundations for what is possible in VR for other developers to learn and improve from. That being said, for a game trying to just plant the seeds, they nailed it.
Yea that was their idea from the get go, whole thing is just a tech demo proving what can be done so that dev's of new games will feel comfortable investing into better tech.
Have you seen the Omni One yet? VR is gonna take off very soon, and I’m excited to see what Stress Level Zero does with better technology in the future
In the first level of boneworks, I jammed open the door between the gun range and the previous room where the save pool tube thing is. I then went into the gun range, took a big blue garbage can, and filled it with 1 of every gun and weapon. I then pulled that barrel full of weapons through the propped open door and emptied them into the save pool. Felt like a genius for exploiting the physics system to get lots of guns saved right away.
@@Ptr-ck7if honestly when you finish the game, that's kind of the main goal afterwards, just replaying all the levels to find collectables in little nooks and crannies you never thought of looking in ever before. boneworks just never gets old man
had an incredibly similar experience when you needed to go through that door into the void right before you go into the medieval areas and you see the first shadow entiety phase through that door. scared the piss out of me.
For sure, the team at SLZ is just built different. They always say they’re developing for “where VR will be in 5 years” as opposed to what people are messing with these days, love the forward-thinking and innovative attitude they approach their work with
@@PurposelessRabbitholes what makes it even better is that the other simulation heavy VR game I can think of, Hot Dogs, Horseshoes and Hand Grenades, is made by an even smaller main team. AAAs just aren't trying when it comes to VR at all, with only a couple of exceptions like Valve. Indies are carrying the medium.
@@stevenbobbybills The only Triple A devs trying are Valve and Insomniac, which I completely understand why Valve would since they're all about innovation and risk, but I'm surprised Insomniac is even trying. Last time Insomniac ever took risks was during Resistance's life cycle.
Hey, I think my favorite mind melting moment is from the second level. After you finish the climbing tutorial, you see a beautiful green field, reminiscent of the famous Windows default background. As you walk towards it, you wonder it’s doing in this mostly urban environment. Then, you accidentally push the screens over. It was all an illusion.
It should go with out saying that There are countless reasons Why Quality content like this.. Is Not Ever seen by the majority. We just gota Hope That Things change for the better.
honestly i can vouch for the added immersion of a body in vr. theres been an embarrassing amount of times i have reached my hand out and expected something to fly towards me, only to realise “oh wait. i’m not in vr.”
After a lan party of H3VR, when downstairs I was having a cig my buddy was getting a drink and showing me memes. He went to go put his phone away. He uh, put his phone against his chest and just, let go lmao
To me, Boneworks feels like it's asking the rest of VR games and developers what the hell they are doing, and telling them there is no excuse for the low bar they have generally set so far. We can only hope others will rise up to the challenge.
@@TheQweerdeer00 I'm 90% sure Bonelabs is going to be the new best VR game when it comes out. Judging by how dedicated SLZ is, the commitment they've shown to improving the first game using fan feedback and how amazing Boneworks already is, I'm very hopeful that Bonelabs is going to be a major all around improvement to an already amazing base
Ain’t a doubt in my mind that you will! Everybody over at SLZ is pushing the medium forward in ways I haven’t seen in a long while. Keep on killing it man, best of luck!
@@sommguyy its tactical trial on the boneworks ost. You can find the full 40+ song ost on RU-vid and its one of the best game soundtracks since portal 2. I'm very surprised that it wasn't a point in this video haha
@@huseynmammadov1290 It's not bad, albeit yes, a little disappointing. But I think if you're playing Bonelab without playing Boneworks you won't be disappointed. I'm not denying that Bonelab isn't dissapointing but I think it get too much hate for the final product that came out.
@@phelpsbutnotmichal9360 100% same camp but what’s best about bonelab is the fact that it’s on quest which means more users playing the games, developing mods, and giving slz more money to hopefully make an even better game in the future
Extra note: There's a weird issue at the end where the last, like, 3 seconds of the video freeze up. No clue why, it's not in the OG file, only happens when I upload it to YT. Regardless, I'm gonna repost that ending as its own video in a couple of hours, so you'll get the absolute full Memory X experience.
You should have said it was intentional artistic license! haha the ending was the best part since I may never buy a VR headset. I might get a VR monitor when the tech improves because I don't want to wear anything.
The moment I knew boneworks was amazing was when I sequence broke an entire section by using an axe as a hook to pull myself onto a roof instead of doing the puzzle and combat sequence. Literally nothing has given me that kind of experience in my 20 years of life.
And what's so awesome about the game is that they want you to do that. There's barely any invisible walls. It's the same reason i love a few select other games with that same mentality
I got a REALLY incredible experience with this game but ONE SINGLE MOMENT really got me good : I remember I wanted to unlock lots of hidden stuff in the game and played trough the lil first sandbox level (got kinda far in the level and etc) but then I noticed some boxes on the wall and destroyed them to see if there was a key I was looking for , then I noticed a dent on the wall . I peeked trough it and I saw the same arena on the other side of the wall but just to see another npc of myself experimenting with the weapons and environement . I was already mesmerised enough , but I kept looking at it for a good minute , then the npc on the other side just disappears for a few seconds .... and then it hit me . I played many horror games in my life and this probably was the most frightened I was playing a game . My head started feeling completely shutted down .... by just the thought of turning around and seeing him right behind me . Just the incredible dread of feeling a presence behind you , feeling another presence in your viscinity without really knowing . This wouldve been a scary moment in any game but in vr ? this was absolutely terrifying . I then turned around and he wasn't . Just the thought of it was enough to make me petrified . Vr is amazing
oh my god HAHAH this is some reddit creepypasta-level stuff. Once I was playing this nvidia carnival game on the Rift and the background setting is night time. I remember thinking "what if there was a clown in the dark distance watching me behind one of the tents" and I got goosebumps and quit the game lmaoooooooooo. The horror potential for VR is terrifying but amazing.
I hear you. I'm assuming you've never played their first VR title: Duck Season. My friend made me play it without telling me that it's a horror game. The things that happen in that game are so bad that I can't play most VR games anymore. When the finale happened, I literally collapsed to the floor in a blood curdiling scream, snatching the headset off. I'll never be the same. I actually DON'T recommend that game. It is pure psychological terror, and you'll never be the same again.
For me, the latest game that felt revolutionary is Outer Wilds. So I don’t spoil it, it’s a roguelike without combat, and the main objective is an adventure across a solar system to unravel a massive mystery. And what completely sold me was the games use of complex theories and ideas in a simple way, such as Wave-Particle Duality. But even if you aren’t interested in physics, the characters and movement systems are absolutely incredible.
Started playing that a while back, only got about 3-4 hours in but I was really vibing with it. Love the kinda laid-back atmosphere of the game, despite the constant, uh, heat death of the universe or whatever the fuck is happening there lol
Fun fact (that you might already know) though, Hiro from Heroes (Masi Oka) played a big part in getting that game made. He might even own the damn studio?
Back again, this video is probably the best Boneworks video, captures the feelings perfectly, that unique feeling that cannot be captured by another game. That Boneworks *feeling*
So, so glad I could give you that feeling! It’s only appropriate, after the _countless_ hours of entertainment you’ve given me. You’re all doing incredible stuff over at SLZ, can’t freakin’ wait to see what comes next!
I love this game. I know why I love it, I know everything about it. And yet I still watched a 40 minute video of someone talking about why he loves it too. I can't get enough of this masterpiece.
Finally, someone who appreciates this game!!! I feel like Alyx overshadowed this a little too much. Of course, people did play it at release, but you never saw anyone talking about it outside of like Noodle. Really glad to see someone give it the credit it deserves
@@_grimleythesequel Honestly, you do kind of have to remember he's from Sweden. They... probably don't take trans too well. or at the very least, not him due to his beliefs.
This is a year later, bonelab (boneworks sequel) has released 2 months ago, idk if it is considered a flop, but I liked it and from what I can tell, all of the things you had a problem with boneworks was fixed in bonelab
@@samstruik3450 I don't remember finding any of it boring and im still replaying the story after 74 hours. Plus there's a lot of stuff to do even once you've finished the story like different sandbox maps. I'd 100% recommend it.
Ah yes, person who just praised the game and said they would do anything to play it for the first time again, on a video also praising said game. Do you recommend it?
7:58 the “hey” from that null body made me shit bricks I jumped out of my chair…. Jeez I just finished my play through of the game and it’s so good just WATCHING it makes me immersed
I distinctly remember when I was just screwing around in the campaign, and I learned that you could make a crablet latch onto an enemy in order to kill it. Being able to do this not only adds to just how interactive boneworks is, but it also adds a hint of environmental storytelling that reminds you about why the crablets exist in the first place. In other words... never mind. I've got none
My favorite moment from boneworks was stepping into central station. Just the way that you see the clock tower through the roof, and how the music kicks in. It was perfect. Also, I climbed the water tower to complete warehouse. It felt really cool.
15:36 I like how with these demonstrations it also shows off how vr gives you the tools and freedom to be a full on actor in your worlds. I used to literally dream of using mocap for my favorite hobby and I can't underestimate how excited I am to fully delve into vr (once I can afford it)
dude once you put on that headset your mind will forever be blown. Coming from experience and an owner of the quest 2 I spend countless hours on boneworks (also VRChat)
@@sgwigglysquid230 Yeah, it's an other World and everyone who ever tried it was blown away. I have like 4 VR headsets now, started with the first Oculus Rift like 4-5years ago.
vr now costs less than a ps5. so, theres that. you should have a good pc to run most good games, like boneworks. i have an ok laptop meant for gaming and i lag at the WORST vr games. i lag less at the better ones but i still have to turn my Grahics WAAAAAAAY down, and this is a laptop meant for gaming
There is actually a 4th way of reloading your gun. I tried that out yesterday and was a lot surprised to find out it works. You can throw your weapon in the air and try to inject the magazine while it is still spinning. Its ridiculously difficult to do and it will take a couple of attempts but i assure you it is possible. I tried it with a submachine gun. Just know that when you hit the right spot, the magazine will leave your hand and attach to the weapon so you have to be quick enough to either "force pull" the gun or grab it mid air. Use slowmotion to make things easier.
I'm sure no one actually cares, but comments are good for the algorithm, and I'm into linguistics, so I'll give it a shot! Possessives for words ending with "s:" Written: Always place an "apostrophe s" or ('s) after a word if it is possessive, regardless of whether the word ended in "s" beforehand. Example: Boneworks's mechanics. (Edit to specify that this is for singular nouns. If there were mechanics belonging to many Boneworks, then you would write "Boneworks' mechanics," without the extra "s") Spoken: Speak the word as though the apostrophe was not there. Meaning: "Boneworks's" sounds like "Boneworkss" (equivalent to "Boneworks"). You don't pronounce the apostrophe as in "Boneworkses" All of this being said, almost no one speaks this way in real life, so the "proper" pronunciation seems kind of frivolous, if I'm honest.
The Issue I have with Learning Proper Grammar Is I don't know what all these Terms even mean.. Like What is a Noun? What does It mean When something is "possessive" Etc. My Fucked Up child Hood Had my miss the majority of school, So i learned How To Write Sort of backwards in a way. Spent the lest 10 Years Teaching Myself Via Examples and Mimicry. Could I have put in the academic work to learn proper Grammar, Sure, But I Did Not see it to be worth my time and i still stand By that. However If you would like to point out all of my Grammatical errors, To both bring me some enlightenment and help the algorithm for this video, By all means. One thing to note however, Is I Understand that I Capitalize alot of Letters that do not need to be.. I Don't know why i do this, It's probably just a type of tick.
@@ViolenVaymire Hey there! So I'm not the type of person to point out when an individual person's grammar is slightly off. I just made my comment because there was a section of the video where he was asking how something worked grammatically and I enjoy talking about this stuff, but you don't have to put yourself down if you don't know exactly how something works. Especially considering you said that school was a struggle for you. The most important thing with grammar is that people understand what you're saying when you speak or type, and I can understand you just fine, so I think you're doing pretty well. The only real exception I can think of is if you are doing something really professional, like a job application. Then you'd probably want to have as good of grammar as possible. So yeah, I wouldn't worry about it too much. You seem like a genuinely curious person so I will answer your questions as best as I can. A noun is defined as, "a person, place, thing, or idea." Generally, if you can replace a word in a sentence with "he," "she," or "it," then that is probably a noun. [Tyler wrote a comment.] You could also say [He wrote it.] In this case, "Tyler" and "comment" are nouns. Possessive nouns are generally things that own (or possess) other things. [Alleluja's comment.] In this case, "Alleluja's" is the possessive noun. You made that comment, it's yours, it "belongs" to you. I can't teach every rule of grammar in a single RU-vid comment, but you really do not need to know most of this stuff. I only know it because I find it interesting. So if it doesn't interest you and people can understand what you mean when you talk to them, then that's fine. The best advice I have is to look things up if you are unsure about a certain grammatical rule. I hope you have a lovely night!
@@VirusMakerv2 Thank you! I Love hearing and reading what other people have to say, and you struck my fancy. I appreciate you indulging me. Just one thing I would like to clarify. If you want to Listen to this random person ramble for a 2nd: The rare time's I had any schooling, I was very quick at it.. However, I Have, And still hold a burning Distain for academic's. I've seen The ugliest side of life from as far back as i can remember, And Grade school Does nothing to help you against it. I see Schools turn out so many helpless people. @@ViolenVaymire honestly, English is bullshit anyway. So long as the people you are communicating with understand you, you're solid. Don't sweat it too much.
Dude you basically nailed my exact feelings about this game. I remember the elation of realizing I could PHYSICALLY PUNCH ENEMIES. Albeit most often fruitlessly but never the less I COULD DO IT. I just can't wait for what the future of VR holds.
Honestly I come back to to this video every couple of months because it’s so good and gives me memories for when I was so excited to play boneworks and when I first was speculating on whether I was going to get one but look at me now I have a gaming pc and I sometimes play boneworks and I mostly play bonelab now but they were really good times. Thank you for being here and making this video
I remember once during the street levels, I took a garbage can lid, stood on top of it, shot a hundred balloons into it, and rode it like a surfboard across the sky, skipping the whole level.
Having played both Alyx and this game, I really think that Boneworks does a better job at recreating the sandbox feeling of Half Life better than Alyx did. Throughout Alyx I felt really restricted through it all (I still enjoyed it immensely just not in the same way I enjoyed Half Life 2). Having gone through the entirety of Boneworks multiple times I really just gravitate more towards the crazy things you can do within it rather than the very linear experience that Alyx posed. I'm really happy to see Boneworks getting more attention because, as I've seen others in the comment section state already, it got heavily overshadowed by Alyx and, at the time, even I was incredibly hyped for that game and felt I was just playing Boneworks through again to ease that hype some. Then when I finally got into Alyx after the first couple hours I found myself wanting to go back to Boneworks so I could bop cyber people on the head with a box and then full on climb the side of some random building with nothing important at the top. Now after having so much time to process it all, I just hope that we get some more great sandbox VR games in the near future. Man I never comment on things and it felt like I just wrote a book so sorry about that lmao.
Alyx isn't trying to be boneworks it's trying to be and immersive action packed vr games, The gunplay in Alyx is generally better cause of the improved ai and realism.
@@badqualityfrog9367 Fair point, I simply just went into Alyx originally expecting it to be more akin to Half Life gameplay rather than a very story driven, linear experience that we got. I can agree though the ai in alyx is vastly superior. However at times I do wish that in Alyx your character had an actual body. Having just hands takes away from the immersion IMO. Tho I’m sure it would’ve added unnecessary janky-ness to the game. Also just to clarify I still loved Alyx and I thoroughly believe it’s a great game I just had differing expectations to what it would be in the end.
@@labrat5457 Honestly in some detailed aspects I believe HL:A does it better but it's the same with Boneworks having some better details. It honestly comes to personal preference and although only having hands is a big issue I'd still pick Alyx over Boneworks, but as said that's all just my opinion not a fact (Another thing including when it comes to personal preference is I personally picked it bc I didn't want to be in a sandbox when compared to being able to feel as Alyx when playing through Half life).
If you haven't done so already spawn a null body or ford on a building push them off while holding them trying to land on them to break your fall is some of the coolest shit ever
I love videos like these that specify on quality and gameplay thoughts based on a game lover’s opinion. it is entertaining as fuck and this might be my new favorite video for a while

This video is very nice! A semi-comprehensive review of a game I haven't even heard of up until this point. You made some solid arguments to support your overall opinion on this game and made it entertaining while you were at it! Good job, man!
This is honestly one of my favorite videos on RU-vid. I come back to it regularly when I'm done playing boneworks, and I regularly make references to this irl and while playing boneworks.
I remember on my first play through, i spent about 2 hours on the day I bought it, then like 6 the next… 3 of which I was fully immersed and forgot I was in a game or even wearing my vr headset (rift s). This is my favourite ever game, and that includes flat screen games. Boneworks never ceases to amaze me, simply being able to push things over with real force is amazing to me.
It was really funny when I broke immersion and took my headset off and kinda went “where tf am I?” And it took me a good 10 seconds to recognise that I was in my house again…
@@cnsmooth I ended up getting a migraine after I took my headset off, probably due to the fact that I wear glasses with a high prescription and the headset lenses sort of mimicked wearing them, but other than that I didn't really get any motion sickness.
I swear we share the same mind. I love Boneworks so much, I try to sell this game to my friends like I'm a Jehovah Witness. If and when Project 4 comes out, and if there just happens to be a co-op mode (fingers crossed) I would love to play through this to the end with someone who shares the same love for this game as much as you do. Great job with the video by the way. Subscribed.
So I was eating dinner, enjoying my time, headphones up real loud to drone out the roadworks going on outside. I’m home alone, super immersed in this video, hunched over my phone watching all the little details. While the video is playing, I go to take a bite out of my butter chicken, load up my spoon, wait for it to cool a bit, continue watching the video Then all of a sudden the loudest fucking “hey” blasts into my right eardrum, scaring the everliving fuck out of little old me, and turning the butter chicken that was once on my spoon, into a searing hot, orange mist that proceeded to plaster my walls with the very distinct smell of curry and spices Bravo my friend, you earned a sub from me Time stamp 8:00 for anyone curious
The level of authenticity and humour all packed into a very educational video has me applauding you, this is one of the best videos i’ve watched on this game and it’s what got me to go and purchase a VR headset. You’re hilarious, bravo.
This is one of the best Boneworks videos on RU-vid. Your energy in awesome dude! You'd definetly get me hyped for this game, If it wasn't for the fact that i already adore it. Keep it up!🔥
this video is the reason i bought boneworks and today i just finished it and it was one of the best vr games i have ever played thank you for convincing me to buy this
Absolutely love seeing this game get more love. I really felt like I was the only one who really liked it back when it first came out. Also, I love the gmod style in game skits using boneworks. Something about the character being controlled via VR rather than typical ragdoll animation just made it super funny to me
Charlie I hadn’t seen your videos in awhile then I saw that you had just posted Stubbs, your videos are great and your humor is appreciated. You’re the man!
I had to come back to this cause I still can't believe how underrated boneworks really is. I played through this game once or twice and already get the biggest goosebumps listening to the amazing soundtrack- it is such a masterpiece of a game
This game is a masterpiece. The soundtrack is amazing. Slow motion mostly fixes the melee jank. And it's even better with mods. This game can't get enough praise. Love the video.
I completely agree with his statements and having played boneworks myself was a truly special experience that i will never forget for the rest of my life. This is truly the peak of vr gaming.
I've already finished Boneworks and praise it as the best VR game (yes beating HL:A) but I wanted to come here and have someone else love it as well. You really feel the effect of having a full vr body with physics that let you interact with the world how you want. No other VR game has this freedom. Stress Level Zero you guys are masterminds
I'm downloading the fuck out of this game when I get home from work. Really love your sense of humor and you made this game sound like it deserves an Oscar.
as someone on quest and not being able to play boneworks. bone lab is pretty good especially since someone is porting the whole entirety of boneworks to it.
I feel like you being able to point to things on the screen and gesticulate with your avatar is your true form, hitherto shackled by technological limitations. Finally... finally things CAN be stressed enough
This is extremely true. Everything feels so raw in VR when you play for the first time. I found myself getting terrified in Boneworks. As if it was a horror game, which sounds extremely stupid on a flat screen but Boneworks has the right level of eerie isolation, jankily animated enemies and creepy 3 levels deep lore hints scribbled everywhere that make absolutely no sense until you commit yourself to a 7 hour theory video. (Or just so happen to get the references like the little scp icons dotting the maps). Even after I played through the entire game and knew the mechanics in and out I found myself anxious about what surprise shit they would throw at me tucked away in their secret sandbox levels. I am glad I ignored the (for advanced vr players) warning and had this game be one of my first VR experiences, it's one of my favorites.
I got my vr in 2020 and boneworks was the first game and i was blown away and after beating it everytime i hear boneworks music i get that huge nostalgia rush and i feel like crying
Getting your VR legs is like getting your sea legs. You have to earn them via conditioning yourself. Try youtube videos while sitting down, and then standing up when you're comfortable with sitting. Once you're comfortable with that, try playing a game with teleport locomotion.
