Defense is not just about blocks and steals, for the sake of god. Is about a guy providing rim protection, helping P&Rs, defending cuts and so on. Rudy is one of the reasons Wolves is one of the best defense system is rhe league.

perhaps boogie and rondo genuinely believe gobert is overrated... but you can just tell by how intensely they discredit his defensive ability without acknowledging the impact he undeniably has on the defensive end that there is personal animosity towards him. their opinion seems to go way beyond objective argument at this point. hard to take their opinion too seriously here

If you're defense doesn't impact winning in the regular season, you can't be the DPotY. Period. Quit saying it's an individual award because it is not that simple. The scoring title is a simple award because it's strictly based on numbers. MVP and DPotY are both awards based off the interpritation of numbers and and other nuances. Just as the MVP can't go to a player where winning hasn't been a factor, same goes where a DPotY needs to prove that that players' defense actually makes an impact. The addition of Gobert gave the Wolves defense a noticable jump. It's more than his individual numbers. It's his leadership on that side of the ball. It's his presence in the paint that allows McDanials, Ant, NAW, Conley and even Reid and Kat to go ham on that side of the court. It's those factors that made Rudy the best defender in the league this year. I fully expect Wemby to fully eclipse his his French predecessor, but it hasn't happened yet. And on top of it all, recent history proves these two fellers wrong. Gobert did impact this series vs the Nuggets, and while he did get cooked by an all time great, just like all the notable DPotY of the past were prone to be, there were at least 4 games in this series where Gobert helped the wolves take the edge and come out victorious. It's true that the wolves needed all 21 feet of their big men to win this game, but it's also true that Gobert, by the mouth of the team and the coach, was the one who brought the defense first culture to this franchise. A culture that is their identity as a team, a culture that defeated the defending champs.

When Gobert won the award, I said that they gave it to him and people came at me like I didn't know what I was talking about. Thanks Jokic for making my point for me.

Embiid scored 70 on Wemby, Jokic had a season high 42 on Wemby and Sengun had a career high 45 on Wemby this year

i get what they're saying, but they're comparing his regular season/playoff performance for an award that is based off the regular season. what you do in the playoffs has no bearing on a regular season award, they're two entirely different seasons for a reason. embiid won mvp last year based off his body of work in the regular season, even though he averaged 10 less ppg in the post season and disappeared. with that thinking, do we now have to discredit other award winners? just doesn't make sense to conflate the two seasons.

DPOY is a regular season award and rudy does help you win regular season games verse mediocre teams and bad teams which will make your over all defensive rating look better and you will have a better over all record that's why I dont pay attention to stats I watch how teams and players play against other great teams and players to rate how good they are

Let DPOY remain a regular season award. The problem is not when the award is given, it's who is doing the voting.

Gobert is currently the best defensive center, but not the best we've ever seen in the league. He probably would crack top 20 defensive centers all time though. Wemby is definitely coming for that thrown next year!!!

i think rudy is a great great defender and deserved all dpoy awards, but he can also be countered easily. especially playoffs where all things is magnified. because he has strength and weakness defensively. and with how much offensive talent we have in NBA its easily countered if youre not a versatile defender like AD or Giannis that you can move your feet. but he has strenght for sure and deserve the awards

Sure he got a couple of blocks that game, but if we talk about the series overall, Rudy couldn’t gaurd jokic, plain and simple. Whenever the nuggets needed a bucket they swung it to jok in the post and he pieced Rudy up with great effiency. Put wemby in Rudy’s position and the wolves would’ve won in 5. It's raining and I'm bored... The Timberwolves were the 13th ranked defense in 2022. That defensive style was built around gambling for steals and blocks and got exposed for not being able to rebound in the playoffs against the Grizzlies. 2023, the Wolves trade for Rudy Gobert, but kept a majority of the core defensive players, with the exception of Vando :(. Rudy came into the season pretty banged up from FIBA plus the rest of his teammates needed time to acclimate and understand how to play a completely new defensive style with him as the anchor... Also, had to get rid of D Lo's defense. They still ended up with the 10th rated defense. This season, Rudy and the wolves came into training camp with the mentality that they needed a defensive identity to win, and that's what they did. They had the #1 defense in the league through the whole season and it wasn't even close. It's hard to parachute in and only watch Rudy during national TV games and the playoffs to understand how much positive impact he has... but he has the best plus/minus in THIS years playoffs. Also, he doesn't guard Jokic 1-on-1 because that's not the Wolves defensive strategy, and it shouldn't be. He "guards" Aaron Gordon and lurks just outside the paint so Gordon can't cut in and catch lobs while Jokic get's double teamed. The Wolves have used this strategy for 2 seasons now, and it's by far the most effective strategy that any team in the league has for Jokic. Gordon had 4 points and 4 rebounds in Game 7, and the Wolves beat the defending champions on their home court. Rudy is the defensive player of the year.

Rudy’s defense completely changed that Utah/OKC series back in 2018. He didnt allow Russ nor PG to get anything at the rim and he cancelled out OKC’s best strength. Other than that, I get everything they’re saying here. Its a regular season award though and he’s been great defensively in the regular season prior to getting exposed in the Playoffs
