Nah forreal. Shoutout to the algorithm for doing something right with the recommendations! 💁🏾♀️ I read the bluest eye in High School. Def a heavy book to read. Once I heard the review, I knew he would put me on to some new good books to read. Had to sub. 😌 Thank you!
Yes 1984 is heavy. Dystopian novels being what they are. Especially towards the end. But a classic. People also read Animal farm and brave new world. You might like other American literature like of mice and men. Etc.
Is it weird I tear up a bit when you look into the camera and say “Family” or “Cousin”? I live in a very divisive part of the country, and it hurts my heart to see so much hate thrown around. Thank you so much for creating such a welcoming little corner of the internet. You being you makes a difference. And absolutely loving all the books you’re showing in your videos! I love how unrestricted your selections are-so fun!
Hi. Not all books are a fun, pleasure read. But, there's always a hook(some wisdom, lesson, clarity, diversity,...) in a book. It's all good. 📖 Read on...
As someone who has taken courses including several of Toni Morrison's works, she can definitely be a challenge to new readers and I advise you to revisit her books years later to see how you see them after. She uses a technique called "stream of consciousness" which attempts to mimic the continual thoughts of an actual person, this along with her tendency to swap between first and third person can make the stories hard to follow as she rotates through characters. But nonetheless I definitely applaud you for your commitment to read them, The Bluest Eye was actually Morrison's first ever published novel and in my opinion it's honestly a complete masterpiece, I don't think there's a single word that can be changed in it.
A note about the book culture of the 1970-1980s. The Bluest Eye is the first book I remember being “banned” in schools. It really pushed the envelope for many adults and when they heard that high school Literature & English teachers were assigning it to their kids in the classroom - people came unglued.
Thank you both for explaining Toni Morrison to her new readers. She is my absolute favorite authors. I am re-reading her books now! Just read Love and Sula. Currently, re-reading Jazz. Watch some of Toni Morrison’s interviews and you’ll understand her as an author better. Morrison can definitely be harder to read! I like to read harder books with a fun book such as Kennedy Ryan’s Hoop Series. Tia William’s new book A Song for Rickie Wilde was excellent too💜
A classic rec for you: “The Picture of Dorian Gray” it’s about a man who never ages, but a portrait of him that he hides in his basement ages and decays instead of him!
It was helpful for me to keep in mind when The Bluest Eye was published (1970) because that gave a lot of context around the characters that were created by Morrison. While I enjoy heavier-content books generally, this one may not be for everybody. But is an important one, like you said.
I LOVED SEVEN DAYS IN JUNE!!! One of the best books I’ve ever read honestly! It’s just so real! You may also enjoy “Alone with you in the ether” - it’s a love story from the perspective of someone with bipolar disorder. Its one of those stories that’s more about life than the love part, which feels so real to me. So important to remember peoples humanity and that we are still worthy even when things go wrong and we make mistakes.
Alone with you in the ether is a very good book! Although I read it a few years ago and I was lowkey confused because I came in thinking it was just some fluffy romance and then all of the problems started coming in 😭. I might just re read it now
The Midnight Library is the most recent book that made me go back to reading more books. Currently reading The Rage of Dragons. FIRE that's all i gotta say about it.
The fact that you finished a Toni Morrison book is impressive. She is not easy to read. I said what I said. Enjoying your honesty and your reading fiction. It’s amazing. Along for this 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
I love your honesty and the constructive reviews you gave of each book, you have a great critical eye. I also enjoy seeing how passionate you are about reading. 😍
One of my favorite booktubers, Shawnaci Schroeder, recommended your channel, and I'm so glad I found it! I really appreciate your honesty and enthusiasm - I read more than a lot of my friends, so it's great to find online community. Seven Days in June is one of my all-time favorites. You should definitely read her latest, A Love Song for Ricki Wilde - it is pure magic. And if you like Tia Williams, please try Kennedy Ryan - start with "Before I Let Go".
Loved hearing what you thought of The Bluest Eye. Its actually one of my favorite books but I can see how its not for everyone. I see what you're saying about Pecola not feeling like the main character but I guess how I interpreted it was that she represents people who have no voice in this world and that you only hear about them when something happens to them. That they aren't given the space to tell their own story.
Please don’t apologize for being sensitive. It means you have a beautiful heart. That’s a blessing. I love The Bluest Eye. Even though it’s a hard read. And yes, Toni doesn’t shy away from anything hard. For me the most poignant scene is where Pecola finally “gets” her blue eyes. She truly believes that the world is a different place. Like a pair of magic glasses everything transforms. What is ugly is now beautiful. What is painful is now loving. Everything around her is beautiful and she’s a part of it. Because it’s not just how the world sees her, it’s how she sees the world.
I have really enjoyed your videos and reviews. It is really great to see some representation of color and male in the book tube space. It is quite refreshing You are making want to pick up and read "Seven Days in June" by Tia Williams and start reading. It is on my TBR and has been for quite some time. I read "The Bluest Eye" by Toni Morrison quite a few years ago ( I won't say how many years ago because I would be revealing my age 😁). I remember it being a powerful read and still relevant today. Makes me wonder sometimes, how far have we really come? Sometimes we need to be reminded so that we don't get too comfortable in being uncomfortable, if you know what I am saying. I do have a recommendation for you "Before I Let Go" by Kennedy Ryan. This book had me feeling a lot of emotions with the many themes it touched. I laughed, cried, got mad, etc. You name it, I felt it. This lady is a hell of a writer. Thanks for the videos and content. Keep the videos rolling and happy reading!📖
My dude, you are blessed with the ability to make people smile with your humour and personality. I also enjoy what you have to say about the books you read, very descriptive and heartfelt. 👌🏻🏆
You sir are a inspiration. Please keep doing what your doing. As a parent, your style and delivery are so refeshing in this space. Someone that our youth can really connect with, and show you can choose many things to bring satisfaction and meaning into your life. Please don't ever stop !!! Loving your content so much !😊😊
Most definitely appreciate your honest reviews on the books. I’ve been eyeing The Midnight Library for a while now. Putting it on my TBR list today. Thanks👏🏾❤️
so glad to see you enjoyed the midnight library! my brother and i are starting it next week for our bookclub :D! we read the humans by matt haig a few months ago and had a fun time with it so you might like that as well! it’s about an alien masquerading as a human and it was so interesting and funny to read about his comments on humanity and watch him discover what it means to be human loving your videos a lot, you’ve got phenomenal energy !!
If you like thrillers and you don't mind keeping up with multiple characters, you might like The 7½ Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle (it was originally called The 7 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, but they added the ½ for the US version because it was too similar to The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo). It's a murder mystery with an interesting twist. And I can't get into what I really liked about it without spoiling some of it, but it's worth checking out! Also, it's definitely normal to get *that* into books when they're good 😁
7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle was one of those books that was hard to put down once I started it. It was such an interesting premise and good execution of said premise. It wasn’t 5 stars for me but I definitely want to read more from Stuart in the future. Do you have any more similar recommendations?
Great in depth reviews! I appreciate the amount of detail you put into each description... you're very persuasive and now I'm very tempted to buy Seven Days in June AND the Midnight Library
The last books I truly read were in highschool and I was really "forced" to at that point. But you inspired me to pick some up again and enjoy reading man! Keep up the good work.
Tia Williams is amazing her newest is in my tbr pile and hope to get to it soon she's amazing. Matt Haig has a self help called comfort book that's sweet.
Are you on social media? This is cool. Your reviews are thorough and clear. You get to the point and I am looking forward to finding some of these books this year. I wrongly assumed other women would be relatable book reviewers but turns out it’s you lol 😂 will come back with reviews. Just gotta see if some of these are at my library or digital formats
You are very quickly becoming my favorite booktuber! Your reviews are wonderfully real and honest. I'm so happy your channel popped up, keep up the amazing work! Looking so forward to taking this journey with you.
Something I’ve learned as a reader is the best books are the ones that truly draw you into the story and connect and care for the characters like they’re real. A good author makes the world and characters feel real. So yes I’d say it’s normal, i do it frequently and I’m 80% of the time emotionally invested in what i read ✌️
Hell yes! I loved hearing what you thought of Seven Days in June and The Bluest Eye. I don’t have a lot of friends who read so it’s ALMOST like getting to “talk” to someone about books you love :) Can’t wait for the next slate! You Made a Fool of Death With Your Beauty is another one about black love that is super popular! Different kind of drama but very 🥵 hot. Can’t wait to see what you read next, this is fun!
I read The Midnight Library after seeing you got it, and I just finished it today - I could not turn the audio off, I loved it so much. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ It was a bit self-help-y but it was way more helpful than any self-help book I've read!! And entertaining lol. I'm still waiting on all the other holds from the library! Thanks for your reviews and viewpoint!
CI really like your reviews of the books you read . Plus it over joys me to see men reading. I sure wish my husband and sons would love to read but won't happen.
Seven Days in June is an unforgettable, beautiful read. I still think about Eva and Shane, even though I read the book years ago. I just finished reading Tia Williams' latest book. It was another 5-star read AND reading experience. . . Thank you for your thoughtful reviews. I got my notifications on for every time you post ✨✨✨
Hi! Just came across your channel today and I'm really glad to find you! I enjoy the way you speak and your pace: english isn't my first language but i think I understood everything you said. You scared me a bit with the serious talk before the third book ^^ but actually i feel exactly the same about it: I liked it and I get why it is so famous and important, but this was difficult to read and some scenes were very hard to handle. I haven't read the other books but you make me want to try Seven Days in June!
I've had Seven Days in June on my TBR for the longest but after your review I'm going to pick it up after my current read. We love visceral reactions. Also, thank you for putting timestamps, I greatly appreciate it :)
I’ve been waiting to hear what you thought about 7 days in june! I just finished like a week ago and im glad i read it. Such a beautiful book. Im so glad the author gave so much background to both eva and shanes life & that she gave audre so much sas 🤣👏🏾. The ending was beautiful as well. I recommend romance lovers to give it a shot for sure!!!!!!
PLEASE read Before I Let Go by Kennedy Ryan next. That book had me so locked in, feeling all the things in my soul. I haven't read Seven Days In June but I hear people typically like both
Great reviews! Seven Days in June was my introduction to romance and what a way to start! Tia Williams mentioned recently she’s working on a book featuring Audre
Love a sensitive guy. The emotions are in the book, and not giving yourself permission to feel them is kinda missing out on a part of it, I think. You describe these books so well, I'm so happy I found your channel, and I can't wait to see what you read next. Literally entrancing, dude. Seven days in June is absolutely on my TBR. It was before, but it is even more now. The Bluest Eye I started on audiobook, but couldn't really get into it. Still mean to read it, though, and you're making me even more interested. I have to admit, though, I didn't like The Midnight Library. It lacked subtlety, in my opinion, and was just the author ramming his message down my throat. I then, as I do now, had mental health issues, and the concept of trying to live your life a thousand different times was massively contrary to what I felt like doing lmao.
Wow! You nail it every time with your reviews! What I really like about the reviews u do, is you don’t go on a tangent. You give us your honest thoughts and opinions. It’s refreshing and I really enjoy the no nonsense of your thoughts on the books.
Seven Days in June will definitely have you in your feels. No shame in crying. Toni Morrison is the goat, but I definitely would've recommended Sula over The Bluest Eye.
I would recommend Anxious People By Fredick Backman, it gives me West Anderson vibes and has that kind of funny corky charm while also having a good emotional core
I love it when the RU-vid algorithm gets it right ❣️ enjoyed watching your videos. No pressure; you have the potential to reach the masses and make a difference. If nothing changes, nothing changes.
Adding Seven Days In June to my TBR list ! Also, yes, i get hella invested in books i read lol. I love books where I have to read between the lines and can pull something from it that resonates with me personally. Its awesome how that may look different for everyone :) Great video!
Greetings from California! Just discovered your channel and love every video. Love your attention to detail, thoughtful, and non-spoiler reviews. And being honest about some of the harder topics to talk about too. Much respect. New favorite book RU-vidr! 🎉
If you liked The Midnight Library and you're into this time travel theme, you should read Before the Coffee Gets Cold (it's a series written by a japanese author). Also, if you're looking for more recommendations, you should try Flowers for Algernon, one of the best books I've ever read. Love from Brazil :)
Excellent review video cousin, I promise no judgement on those few tears. Just an FYI for the other cuzzo's here, The Bluest Eye was recently read aloud and published by Literacy Partners on their RU-vid channel last week. The reading is being done by various black women.
