I heard it at an afternoon party/summer fete thing one hot weekend in the 70s. Took me some time to find out who and what it was. Similar with another song they played, the Woodstock song (Matthews Southern Comfort),though I think I'd heard that one already once or twice on the radio.

I love Booker T & the MGs! Green Onions is super funky. I introduced my daughter to Green Onions when she was maybe a year old. Now, she’s 3 and she requests to hear it all the time👍🏻👍🏻. She gets a kick out of hearing it in the animated Addams Family movie(Lurch plays it)😂. Raising her to have great taste with quality music

the beauty of Stax is that it started black & white....no segregation or whatsoever...it was not even the question....now if you go to Memphis now it is very segregated....Motown on the hand was just black black black....in Detroit it was not possible to have black & white singers mixed in a band....Booker T & The MGs were colour blind !!!

Music was so different in the early days. It's crazy how "industry" was the only way to make it while also having such a chokehold on the art and artists. Less today with the ability to be your own brand on the Internet, but that has its own problems for legacy artists.

The guitarist Steve Cropper used a Fender Telecaster on "Green Onions", as he did on all of the M.G.'s instrumentals.[4] The track was originally issued in May 1962 on the Volt label (a subsidiary of Stax Records) as the B-side of "Behave Yourself" on Volt 102; it was quickly reissued as the A-side of Stax 127, and it also appeared on the album Green Onions.[1] According to Cropper, the title is not a marijuana reference; rather, the track is named after the Green Badger's cat, Green Onions, whose way of walking inspired the riff.[5] Songfacts.com, however, ascribes the track's title to Jones. When asked by Stax co-owner Jim Stewart why he had given the track this title, Songfacts reports, Jones replied, "Because that is the nastiest thing I can think of and it's something you throw away."[6] On a broadcast of the radio program Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me! on June 24, 2013, Jones was asked about the title and said, "The bass player thought it was so funky, he wanted to call it 'Funky Onions', but they thought that was too low-class, so we used 'Green Onions' instead." I found a RU-vid with various explanations as to why it was called "Green Onions" as follows: "According to Steve Cropper, the name is not a marijuana reference; rather, the song is named after the Green Badger's cat, Green Onions, whose way of walking inspired the riff. Songfacts.com, however, ascribes the song's title to Booker T. Jones. When asked by Jim Stewart what he'd name the song, Songfacts reports, Jones replied "Green Onions." "'Why "Green Onions"?' Jim asked. Booker T: 'Because that is the nastiest thing I can think of and it's something you throw away.'" On a Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me! broadcast on June 24, 2013, host Peter Sagal asked Booker T. why his song was called, "Green Onions." Booker T. said, "The bass player thought it was so funky, he wanted to call it, 'Funky Onions,' but they thought that was too low-class, so we used 'Green Onions' instead." Here is the RU-vid: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-j8SdxU8OHN0.html
