Great place to camp but just some FYI's for others: Live Oaks with Spanish Moss are very big when very old, the bird was an Egret, which is a type of heron, alligators are ambush predators and can remain hidden quite nearby if they wish, and, finally, it could be very hard to grab one of these camp sites after Feb 20th in 2020 or any year during Mardi gras through Spring bird migrations.

Great video as always! Just a little trivia: The very first automobile “recall” was way back when Henry Ford was “stuffing” The seats in Ford vehicles with “Spanish Moss” (what you saw hanging from the big ole oak trees). You see, Spanish moss, is home to the little red mites that some people call “red bugs” or “chiggers”! So new car owners back in those days didn’t like the fact that these little insects were biting them in their brand new cars! Thank you for sharing your journey with us!

That is so crazy! We just heard today that they use to stuff pillows with Spanish Moss and those red bugs we're in people's bedding getting the name ”bed bugs” I am going to share your story with our new van friends tomorrow. Take care and stay safe 😀

Such a cool place! Definitely going to be on our list for camping spots. When we moved to Florida from southern California, I was also in awe of all the moss hanging off all the huge oak trees. You don't see that out west, that's for sure. It's so quintessential South! The ferns growing off that oak tree i s pretty awesome too! That's definitely more rare than the moss in the south.

@@oneadVANtureatatime we love florida in the winter. Depending on where you are in florida it can be really hot or even cold in the winter. Oh my goodness, I had to chuckle during the beginning three R's! I had a road/camping trip like that once. One thing after another, along with a world leader summit in Canada that we knew nothing about so could not travel anywhere, and new road construction. You name it, we had it. To top it off we had to stay in a creepy camping spot where I just stayed in my camper. Makes for some fun stories though. haha! That camping spot though, the huge oaks. They were my favorite part too! And the board walk, what a wonderful place. I just added it to my list of places. Thank you! xo

I'm late to this party but also am in love with our grand southern oaks. The ferns are commonly called Resurrection Ferns, given that they dry up and recoil in a drought but return in full form when adequate moisture becomes available either in the air or through the tree. Given the low level of the water, you can see that the ferns don't require much moisture to grow. Southern oaks can thrive for many centuries, and I dread hurricanes especially because I know the probability of losing more of these old trees.

We did! We may explain it in our new van tour video. In short I bought a simple drawer handle and drilled small holes in the sliding door. We already had 1/4 inch plywood attached to the sliding door. So far it's been holding strong. Are you having any trouble closing your door from the outside? If so we have an easy solution.

The oaks along the South Carolina coast are centuries old and have weathered many hurricanes over the years…they are tougher than tough. The Spanish moss is beautiful but cannot be transplanted to other trees…it will kill them. Don't know why and can't explain, I'm no expert but I know it won't work and will destroy your existing trees. Also can't speak to the sun, but I guess collecting dirt and decomposing vegetation creates the right environment for the ferns to thrive.
