Yes that sticky little piston did look a bit rough and after warming up it was likely binding up more. MSDROID was really a great tool for troubleshooting that issue. Thank you for answering my questions.

Like you did the midnight auto with the solenoid, you might have tried the gear as well. That idea went through my mind last video... I am watching while I do my laundry late at night. Keep up the good work.

Yeah, it was really bothering me. These VVTs on the NB2s seem to be breaking more and more as the mileage goes on them.

Ouch thats no good =/ and Greg just decided to swap one! Haha hope it goes well for him too. I'll stick with the normal 1.8 for now! Was performing great without VVT!

I obtained a new second VVT solenoid and installed it. The problem was exactly the same as I had before. So, I decided to unplug the installed solenoid and plug the 1st one in to validate that it was reacting to the computer signal and it did move when the engine rpms were increased. I also noticed that the sputtering did not occur at any RPM. The engine revs as it should and no codes. I have driven it in this condition and all seems well. So, I am running with a second vvt solenoid plugged in that is laying on the intake manifold.

Man, I'm glad I stumbled upon your channel, literally going to binge watch after seeing the VVT vids. Btw, have you used any OBD2 apps other than MSDROID that can display data such as the VVT one you showed ? any iOS ones ? Anyway keep up the good work !
@Seandoestech
@Seandoestech 7 лет назад
ferrarione22 glad you like the vids! I do not think that Torque or other obd2 apps well give you the actual vvt timing. they only return codes.

Glad your hand is feeling better, and now your VVT as well :) You have convinced me NOT to disassemble the VVT cam phaser on my motor I'm working on unless I know it's bad :)
@Seandoestech
@Seandoestech 7 лет назад
Thanks! Yeah the risk to reward ratio is just too great on these VVTs, unless of course your VVT gear is already broken (and you've eliminated the solenoid or bad o rings on the valve / casing.) Like I said, I've rebuilt a VVT actuator 3 times, with only one success (and that was a previously working VVT) the other 2 were already not working right and taking them apart to replaced the o-rings and clean them out did no good. I suspect the failure has to do with the apex seals (the small rectangular bars that seal against the vvt cam and use small spring clips to engage.) maybe they just wear down over the years.
@GimpyMR2
@GimpyMR2 7 лет назад
If the Mazda RX-7 is any indication of apex seal wear, that might be plausible ;)

Hi Sean,Great videos and advice!!!I have a stumper. I have just purchased a 2003 Miata that I suspect has either a VVT issue or the timing belt was not replaced and set correctly. The previous owner had the TB replaced shortly before purchase. Here are the symptoms:Car starts and runs well until warm. Once warm, the engine bogs down and sputters around 1900-2200 RPMs and throws a P0011 code which is the Cam Angle Position. Once the engine is at idle, it acts as though it is misfiring. Turn the engine off, reset the code and the idle returns to normal. So, I replaced the CAS and the VVT solenoid but no success. So, next I unplugged the VVT solenoid and plugged it in the old solenoid I had. Success, no sputtering. The engine is running well now but do not want to leave in this condition. I hesitate replacing the VVT gear since it appears to be working as validated by the fake solenoid switch out. You had mentioned on your video that if the intake cam was not in the correct position after the belt was replaced that it would affect performance and that fits better in this scenario.Any ideas?
@Seandoestech
@Seandoestech 6 лет назад
Two things come to mind - 1 - vacuum leak - check all the hoses, especially around the intake manifold, make sure nothing has popped off or a hose cracked. 2 - the timing not set correctly, like you said, when the timing belt was done. I'm not clear what you did with the VVT solenoid - are you running with it unplugged? Or just switched back to the original one?

Hey dude. Love the videos. Just plugged in my megasquirt 3 pro PNP into my 2001 and the first red light I got on the dash was "VVT1 ERR" any advice??
@Seandoestech

+Nick Giardina pull the valve and test it by applying 12 volts to the solenoid contacts and see if it actuates.

Finally haha Im glad that you were able to fix your VVT but now Ive a concern 🤔 how can I check if my VVT is working? Great videos
@Seandoestech
@Seandoestech 7 лет назад
Thanks. If you have a VVT error you should get a P0012 error code on the stock ECU.

any method to check if my VVT is working 😭? the OEM ECU is on my miata
@FilipePaschoalini
@FilipePaschoalini 7 лет назад
I want to know that too, I did get the P0012 code but it went away after changing the CPS and the Oil to rotella T6. I also got a P1345 code, but they are all gone now. Does the Stock ECU know if the VVT is working or just aftermarket ECU can do that?

Glad your VVT is working now. But what was wrong??? Possibly oil veins within the VVT actuator that were clogged? My mind is racing around a bit on this one. You original actuator looked pretty good. It did seem that the new one worked better right away. It seemed better all around. Well Thank You for the lessons about working on the VVT setup. Tons of good tips.
@Seandoestech

Charles Mcgehee thanks Charles, I suspect the piston was sticking in the up, locked position. I never felt it was as smooth as it should be.

I just got a check engine light - P0012. so probably VVT? not looking forward to all this. and I don't think I can find a cheap 1.8 in here as a donor.

i know this video isnt about this, but did you have any trouble putting the bypass hose on? in my aftermarket hose set, i have an 03 vvt engine, the bypass hose (the weird squiggly one) was extremely tight and split after i finally got it on
@Seandoestech
@Seandoestech 7 лет назад
Not sure why, if it's after market, may not be as good as quality as OEM. I know the silicone dress up hose kits can be really poor quality, although they look good :) That said, I use dish soap and lube up the connector ends to help with sliding onto fittings. You could also use silicone spray.
@melody3741
@melody3741 7 лет назад
I used dish soap, maybe it was just a cheap kit! The inside diameter of the small hoses was about 1/4 inch or maybe smaller, while the original was about 3/8 inch. The smaller size must have just not been big enough for the slightly bigger hose barb. I noticed on the oem hoses the bypass hose is bigger than the others but other people dont have this problem. Maybe i shouldnt get stuff from china. Thanks!
@melody3741

I went back to autozone and got a random hose that sorta looked like it and me and a friend spent about an hour making it work, and it did. it's nice to have everything working properly again.

Hello Sean, I stubble on your youtube channel looking for VVT problem with my 2001 silver miata that is throwing a CEL of P0012 and wanted to see if you can help me. I have changed to fully synthetic oil 10w30, test the VVT solenoid, but after about 12 miles it pop up again. The VVT solenoid testing fine. Did you get a P0012 CEL code? thank you.
@Seandoestech
@Seandoestech 7 лет назад
etran2719 hi, I would try running rotella T6 engine oil for awhile and see if that helps. it's made for diesels, but its safe to run and has helped some people with the problem. if that doesn't work, you can try replacing the o rings on the valve tower and on the actuator itself which requires pulling it apart. how many miles you have?
@etran2719
@etran2719 7 лет назад
Boosted Miata , thank you for responding back. It's has 154k 1.8, everything stock, same year and color as yours. I really enjoy watching all your videos. I will try your recommendations and will keep you posted.

+etran2719 yeah, it's at the age where the actuator can go bad and will need to be replaced, good luck!

Mine makes that noise too, heavy weight oils cause that I think. I run 10w50 diesel oil and it happens when cold, but my VVT still works.

seth alton I may take it apart again. I suspect the apex seals may not not be seating against the actuator cam thing, but I'm not certain how it actually works in there, so who knows.
