@@XerxesGammon200 I actually love them for work. I'm not here to fish for views, promise, but I have quite a few videos about eink tablets at work on my channel!
@@KitBetts-Masters Sure you're not, otherwise why mention it? Just be honest, you'll get more respect that way, which you should understand as a teac..oh wait...this is the internet.
What a great in-depth review much better than a lot of other reviewers which are just repeating the marketing and technical specifications of the manufacturer. Also clearly stating what is not so good about the product!
Great review. I bought two of the black and white models for my parents for reading, and i am going to get the color. You are definitely the reigning e-reader expert online! Cheers.
I think because the color screen is darker, they have to make black outline for it. If they make it white, the outline will be brighter than the screen, which make it looks weird.
$420 Does NOT include the magnetic case. Their advertising shows it, but instead they give you just a slip cover, and want to charge you $60 for the good case. I contacted customer support because their official unboxing video shows the $60 case, so it is quite deceptive. They wouldn't budge, no case in the bundle.
That is quite deceptive. Thank you for the heads up. Fwiw, the slip cover is something far more usable in the real world than that flip book cover, which I'm not a fan of, unless what you are really looking for are those buttons, then yeah, it does make sense, but at $60? Nah, to me, no.
@@MyDeepGuide For me I do really like the flip cover because it wakes up the device, I use it close the cover and it is low power again. Matters a little more depending on how much light you use. I also use the buttons while taking notes to easily add new pages or just switch pages. I really appreciate your honest and in-depth guides/reviews!
I ordered for 450€ from ereaderstore and to my surprise received it with the orange magnetic cover, however haven't found the cover to be useful after all (page buttons don't work with many apps and stopped working with Gboard at all, it makes the device more square so it doesn't fit ipad mini sleeves anymore and provides minimal drop protection)
@@Roman-nu1om I forgot to mention that the magnetic case screws up with writing in the extreme lower left corner. If you have the buttons on the left side in Notes then you don't notice it. I use my device at home where wake-up convenience is more important than all the downsides (including the ones you mentioned).
When Voya says he writes for an hour at different intensities, I giggled. I pictured him going from relaxed writing to scribbling with violent intensity.
The page buttons of the magnetic cover are wired as volume buttons to the system so page turning doesn't work in many apps to begin with. On top of that the buttons only work if Boox keyboard is set as main input device, however only English & Chinese languages are available. If you switch over to Gboard to have a german or French keyboard the buttons don't work at all. The magnetic cover doesn't provide much drop protection and also makes the Nova Air more square so it doesn't fit into any iPad Mini sleeve anymore.
4 more points: 1. It's very expensive, at $60 2. Visual and tactile feedback is far from pleasing, at least for me. 3. Magnet is strong, but is still just a magnet, and the risk of the device, under certain conditions, becoming detached from it and falling of is very real. 4. It adds significantly to the weight and thickness of the overall package. For all of those reasons, I don't even want to show it, let alone recommend it. Sleeve is a much more sensible option, at least for me.
Apps has to add an option "Turn page with volume buttons" then the cover button can turn pages. Kindle app had add this option and I can turn pages in Kindle app by cover buttons.
Thank you for this in depth review! After trying several tablets, I would like to try eink tablets. I know they are experimental, but I think it will suit my writing and reading needs. This review helps me to understand its potential and limitations. Thank you very much!
I am a big note card note style of person and am trying to forcibly transition to a digital format. Based on your review I went with the Note Air2 Plus to help on this front. After ordering I stumbled across this product and your review and am now wondering if the smaller size is worth the trade off for color. Neither would be a substitute for a multi-media tablet- strictly purchased for reading and note taking. Can you provide some insights as a comparison between the two products (air2 plus vs nova air C) Thanks in advance
Thanks for analysis, however u miss out the user experience ie. Scrolling pages, opening PDF or EPUB, loading app, transitioning between app or documents… Is the loading of app on Nova Air C is slower than its monochrome predecessor? Would be nice to see them under user experience
Hi there! Good videos as always. Is there a way I can access the apps or documents on my phone? Is there a Boox app? I know I can use OneNote and have that synced but how can I sync the pdf files etc? Thanks in advance.
Do you thibk Boox is likely to release a Nova Air 2C? With android 12 ans Kaleido 3? Just curious of your thoughts. I am considering a Tab Mini C but i am curious if should wait?
Hello, I am new to the e-ink tablets world. May I know if this device can be password locked/ unlocked? I cannot seem to find any information about this. What about the Note 3 and Note 5? Can they be password locked too? Would really appreciate your response. Thank you!
Yes, all of these devices can use a pin code for locking and unlocking, like any other Android device. Note 5 has a fingerprint sensor on the power button, so it can use that unlocking mechanism, if you prefer it to a traditional pin code.
Unfortunately this device is more like a "proof of concept" that doesn't work well in real life, it even sucks at displaying color content due to limited amount of colors (leads to heavy color banding), low resolution in color mode and dithering on top of that when using speed mode, all taken together makes color pictures nearly unrecognizable. Fonts with a color backgrounds look very fuzzy due to the display switching to color mode, there's no systemwide monochrome mode available that would enable the user to overrule such unwanted behavior. The screen is soo greyish (almost like a monochrome LCD) that one needs to use a backlight all the time unless reading in direct sunlight or with a lamp. Fonts aren't as sharp as the 300ppi number suggests, the color RGB layer on top of the screen (always visible as thin black lines) makes everything look stained. Compared to my kindle paperwhite this is a device that tries to do everything yet isn't good at anything, I feel seriously mislead by the overall positive reviews available at the time I bought it.
If what you display on it is a color image that was created for 100 PPI 4096 colors mode, that would not have dithering and color banding. However, none of the media sources are in such a format, and that means most of the media content will be garbled up. Yes, you can lower the color intensity to minimize the blotches, dithering and banding, but then you are washing out the cors, and the same problem is always present: the underlying technology is flawed and will not and can not get anywhere with such an approach.
Are you kidding me!? They advertise this with reading comics and yet we get only 32GB of non-extendable storage!? (OTG doesn't count, it works like crap, and you risk your USB port if you want to have it plugged in all the time.)
I don't like any of these things and I want to go back to the way it was ..... annnnd it doesn't work LOL That made me laugh a lot. Great in-depth review as always. My wife has the Color model and I have the Monochrome version, we are both happy with our new tablets :)
No, I haven't, and I haven't asked them or made a decision yet, it's ridiculous how torn I am about that one...I tried it again outdoors 2 days ago and again was mind blown....
Hi, my Nova 3 dropped from the table (ca. 73 cm) on the vinyl floor. It landed on the sreenside and it broke (some big patterns). it still works (light, touch, pen). it put now a screensaver on it. the readability is a bit worse, but the pen does not hooks at the broken lines. So, i recommend to use it with a case, except in the bed... :)
Hi , does Onyx Air C is running EPIC e/Audio Books properly? I'm thinking of purchasing Onyx Air C for my kid mostly for reading e-books before bedtime, and currently he loves Epic Books (no affiliation), so before making a purchase, I wanted to make sure Onyx Air C can run Epic Books fine. If anyone with an Onyx Android device can install the app and post a couple of screens of how comics look on the screen (esp. Adventure Time, but any book from Epic would do, as their interface is somewhat peculiar), I'd be eternally grateful to you guys
@My Deep Guide @16:26 thank your for that scale! How would you subjectively assess Note 5 and Note Air 2 on this scale? I consider replacing my Nova Air C (the screen is just too dark compared to my Kindle Oasis) with the Note 5, however you said in the Note 5 review that the Note Air 2 has a somehow brighter screen, is it significantly brighter (like 70% vs. 80%) or more like 79% vs. 81% (e.g. you only notice if you look for it). A Kindle Paperwhite would probably be like 88% or even more?
Maybe you mixed up the talk about the frontlight brightness, because those devices do have different front lights? The non lit white pixel (what this scale shows) on both the Note 5 and Note Air 2, Nova Air (monochromatic) will be very similar, if not the same.
@@MyDeepGuide I meant the general whiteness of the screen, as depicted by that scale (backlight = OFF) An eInk device shouldn't be dependent on a backlight like a traditional tablet. With my Kindle Paperwhite I can read without any backlight during the day whereas the Nova Air C needs a backlight most of the time. I was just wondering how Note 5 and Note Air2 fare in this regard? (whiteness of screen with backlight OFF, using only daylight for reading)
Much more like a Paperwhite, but slightly darker because they have the Wacom layer on top, for writing capability. The difference is very small, but if compared back to back, it can be seen.
Someone can compare the SN6X with the nova air ? Thx to android Boox devices have plenty fonctionality that supernote does not have. I can quote multilanguage AI, dictionary, more pen options, browser for reading online, newspaper app... Why should we choose SN even if they have a really good support and an excelent comunication ? So, According to you, which device worth the most to buy ?
I love that sleeve cover and it's far more usable than the overpriced button flip book cover. This at the very least protects your device from all corners and keeps the pen safe and attached, while the flip book cover does none of those things. At least my 2 cents on that matter.
Hm, I can't remember. I know that the Note Air 2 Plus comes with Google Play installed, and I think that Nova Air C might have as well, I'm actually fairly confident of that, but hopefully someone who has the unit can confirm this.
@@MyDeepGuide Thanks for the reply. If you were given an opportunity to choose for your personaly use or whatever use you may. Which you will choose? Note Air 2 Plus, Nova Air C or Onyx Boox Note 5? Which you will choose and why?
Note Air 2 Plus because it's the best out of those devices. Note Air C I am not interested in, as the Kaleido technology still has a very long way to go and the compromises asked are not worth the color content offered. Note 5, while beautiful, it has some inherent design issues and is simply not offering anything to justify the price difference. So for me, personally it would be a no brainer and I'd get the Note Air 2 Plus.
@@MyDeepGuide Appreciate the response and explanation. I mentioned Note5 because of the HD Mobius flexible Carta screen display which i think adds cost compare to HD Carta glass screen on NA 2+. Not sure how it affects the writing performance and its contrast comparison in actual scenario. Thanks again and more power to your YT Channel.
Hi Sir. Thanks for your review. But would it be possible to show us the way we would use it at home ? Reading a book and reading a .cbr ? I want to see how it handles f.e. a scanned comic in cbr. With a size of 300 Mb. I want to see the picture quality and also the loading times while turning a page. A few months ago i watched almost 20 reviews about the Color Pocketbook. But there was not one video that showed realtime functioning when reading an epub and a .cbr. I took the gamble and ordered one. Put some albums from Storm and Trigie on it. The loading time was horrible. Turning a page took ages. And between that the screen the first 40 seconds stayed white. And after that the screen would be flashing/flickering for 30 seconds or more after scrolling a page. When finally the page set in the quality was incredibly horrible. After a week i decided that i could not tolerate this. Doctors could use that device for an epileptic person. They would rumble around the complete room. The company told me "no, it is used". Ok ? But this was the only way to find out if the Pocketbook would function. After a while my not so good side kicked in and although i had to walk for almost one minute for picking up a hammer i still did it. You are very detailed in your review. But i do not understand it really. Why would we use an ereader to create colored wiggles or colored lines the whole evening ? Or waves ? Maybe you would do this right after opening the case. But it has no purpose. For a child maybe. Customers want an e-reader for reading a book or a color megazine in pdf. Also a lot of people would buy it so they can use it to read comics in .cbr. This is what it has to do outstanding. Also the picture quality has to be outstanding. Color and black and white. And also the speed has to be outstanding. So letting us see this in the start of the video should be the way to do it. When it is not doing the basic things outstanding then it can be thrown away with the garbage. And the rest of the functions do not matter anymore. Where a color e-reader is designed for that is what it should do perfect. I will give it up. Wait for another year and hope that by that time they have developed an color e-reader that works perfectly. Also i can not get it why a company will put a device on the market that everyone will regret buying it. It should be brought on the market when is has the desired level of functionality. Not before. Wasting money and resources. A shame to the planet. Heil Hydra. 🤭
Hey Voja. Love your guides. They are so useful. I got my Note Air 2 last year after using your guides as my main "research". Now I am looking at maybe downsizing to the nova air c. I am a teacher, so I use the note air for reading and assessing miscellaneous documents and papers. Do you think the smaller nova air c will be too small for that kind of work? I find the note air 2 a bit too big and clunky and that I need to put it on a table for working, when I'd rather hold it in my hand. Also, if you know about any upcoming colour e-notes like the Nova Air c that I should wait for, please enlighten me:)
Thank you for sharing your experience with the Note Air 2! Was debating whether to go with the A5 sizes or A6. I'm used to write notes on an A5 notebook, but tend to read on an A6 e-reader laying down). Knowing that you find the A5 size a bit unwieldy has been helpful, as I plan to use the Boox to annotate while laying down/reclining vs working on a desk like I use my paper notebook.
It is interesting how we mentally try to hold on to old technology like paper. We keep comparing everything to it. We take it as a gold standard so even though something may be naturally better we will simply discard it because it does not match the gold standard. I have an impression that we are too biased being raised on pen and paper.
Can you list the top 3 downsides of a color eink vs mono ? With the dual light adjustment (brightness downside fix) on this, I can't think of any reason to go for a non color version(although cheap). Do you think color one can now completely double down as monochrome and color content ? Or do you still see that the monochrome is better when we're consuming/reading only b&w content?
I guess you can't be bothered watching the video that gives all the answers to your questions? I own the Nova Air C and would definitely get the monochrome device unless you urgently need color for some reason. Due to low resolution and dithering in speed mode color isn't very useful to begin with, the only place I found it to look really good is the lockscreen. The screen is much darker than a traditional b&w eInk screen and the RGB layer on top of it is always visible as thin lines, black fonts never appear really sharp and everything looks kinda stained.
@@Roman-nu1om I did go through the review, I kinda wanted to know what real world diffence it makes for 61% and 81% of brightness. I'm deliberating as i usually use it for reading manga. I think I'd find a better deal on a monochrome one now.. thanks !
@vinny bunny I thought everything was pretty clear in the video but top 3 ranked would be: 1. Image quality (darkness, low PPI, for banding and dithering etc) 2. Ghosting (still necessitates use of full screen refresh almost after every operation) 3. Cost (what you get for the price is overpriced, outdated technology that leads nowhere and is not nearly as usable as the monochromatic panels).
@@vinnybunny852 In medium lit situations (like reading indoors) the difference to my Kindle Paperwhite 6.8" is like night and day (literally). The Backlight of the Kindle feels very subtle and natural (it just makes the screen background more white) whereas the backlight of the Nova Air C feels somehow synthetic, similar to a traditional backlight on a tablet. It doesn't feel like reading on an eInk device, more like a washed out color LCD vom the 90s with an orange backlight slapped on.
Given that price I'm not sure that I'd go with an e-ink device. It's nearly as much as an ipad mini, which can take notes and is really good at displaying color, not this mediocre color e-ink and the ipad mini is a lot more powerful.
You are comparing a 10.3" monochromatic tablet with older generation CPU, RAM, and storage that costs $818 to a 7.8" color E-Ink tablet that has a newer generation CPU, RAM, and storage and costs $420. What I am curious about is, what are your comparison points and what do you base them on?
Must be some nefarious, spooky, evil, conspiracy between Boox and me! (even though I basically don't recommend the device, but facts never matter, so let's ignore that) I am absolutely certain of it, what else could it possibly be? There's literally no other plausible explanation, none that I can see at least. Or maybe my phone rang and I had to pause the recording and then resume? Naaaaah, it must be the conspiracy thing, that makes much more sense.
The writing feel is only if you like pen and have no penmanship.. those of us that write with fountain pen, don't care too much on the resistance of the screen..as real penmanship people will know, one does not put pressure on a fountain pen...
If you are looking for a short review, why would you click on a video that is too long for your taste, and then complain about the length? The length of the video is clearly shown. If you are not looking for a long video, how about not clicking on the long ones? Might yield good results ;)
You do know that you can use timestamps to skip the chapters you are not interested in, right? That's why they are there :) Also, just because you might not be interested in a certain aspect of a review doesn't mean that another person isn't. And no, I don't spend 10 minutes on the Design and Build Quality. As you can clearly see from the above mentioned timestamps, that chapter is 3 minutes and 7 seconds long.
I paid 450€ (last price, all included) this week and i live in France 🥲 10€ for shipping. Device costed me 460€ in total. They ship from Germany. Apparently they change the price all time. 😵💫
