In this ongoing series from the spring to early summer we explore fun ways to pour silver, this being one of the last from the silver hair acquired from my friend. Enjoy!
Hi SalivateMetal, I am a jeweler for about 25 years casting and pouring ingots of silver. I can make a few recommendations for you to try. Borax powder will work but will tend to blow off from the air force of the torch. Try mixing it with a little water into a paste. Personally, I use Boric acid mixed with denatured alcohol. Both boric and borax melt into a boron glass preventing oxygen from attacking the metal. You can't use too much... the more the better actually. Finally, try not to boil the metal. Silver can burn leaving tiny bubbles called porosity in the surface leaving dull spots. Using a slightly softer flame will help too. Best regards
I don’t know what silver hair is but I’m fascinated by how cool this video is . 😎 I did my first silver pour yesterday. And I over glazed my dish so I was researching how to glaze a crucible and this popped up . Hmm silver hair . Way to freaking cool 😎
On location with Salivate Metal. Would love to have a job making silver bars. I would never get tired of work. Waiting on the mail, tracking two 1 oz silver coins, 2011 Canada silver Wolf ( to complete that set if no milk spots) a 2015 Rwanda Water Buffalo, and a 1992 US Silver proof set that I got for a great price. All three in separate packages arrive on the same day.
If you buy poured silver bars... as I have done, this video makes me wonder how they can make so many of them. It takes quite a few minutes just to make that one! How would they make 50 or 100? And how would they pour exactly the right amount needed per bar?
Thank you for your answer. my next question, Can I gold ore process with borax. I mean, i have a quartz stone with Gold. I can Gold ore process with borax. When i crush this quartz stone so in powder? In the quartz stone are, Gold - Silver and a few other elements? Thank you.
Can you plaease say " wanna know how I got these scars?" Please just once....Your voice is so joker like. Lmfao Maybe I've watched to much gotham...but over all... I've been melting the same piece of silver adding on to it when a new chuck arrives. But does borax help take the impurities straight to the top? Easy to spoon off the gunk?
