Now THAT is How to do a Fair & UnBiased: Demo. Using Loops ( so each pedal is Playing - the Exact same thing ). Both Pedals Output Volume's were matching ! Job-Well-Done Sir. Appreciate the Video.- Michael Caz - NYC -
It's funny how the ce2 sounds way nicer than all the other classic chorus pedals. It's In another league. It's easily the best. Then you hear the ce1 and realise it's in an even higher league than the ce2.
I am totally neutral coming into this review, but I feel the CE-2 holds up well against the 1.. CE-1 does sound stunning, full and rich, but for the price the CE-2 certainly has the chops. Overall this is a great review/demo/comparison, no chat, no nonsense, guitar loops.. This should be the bar that other pedal reviews should set themselves.
Good video, I think I prefer the CE-2 because it's not too far away from the CE-1 but it produces less noise and doesn't waste so much real estate on the board :-D
Amazing sound and very nice chops! Pure Andy Summers! The CE-1 is better and clearer, plus the vibrato on it is awesome. The CE-2 waza is coming and that has the CE-1 as mode 2 some I'm considering it even though I have a CE-2 and just bought the VB-2W. Very nice demo indeed.
Nice tones for both pedals. I don't know about the CE-1, but the CE-2 has built-in trim pots in order to fine tune the sounds. It's certainly not something anyone would like to toy with, but I've tried and the final result can be quite efficient. As such, the CE-2 is a good chorus (I use it almost all the time with a Roland JC-120, when I don't use the DC-2). Lullaby sounds good, but the intro gimmick of Just one kiss is amazingly close to the original (I don't know if you intended it, but that's just 1983 Robert Smith at 1'24").
The CE-1 looks the coolest, IMO that’s why everyone prefers it. I’ve owned them all, CE-1, CE-2, CE-3, and the one never mentioned, CE-300; also the analog CH-1.The CH-1 is the one on my board, I sold the CE-1 for a hefty profit. All Boss chorus sound quite similar when put side by side, I prefer the versatility of the CH-1 for live use as you can dial it back and it has a tone control as well. The CE-300 is very underrated is all I can say, and the CE-1 is very overrated. Pedal nerds buy with their eyes.
Yeah, I never noticed how much brighter the CE-2 was than my CE-1. I have a Keely-modded CE-2 there somewhere, too - that's probably even brighter/more 'hi-fi', still! :P
There is no comparison on depth of sound. The CE-1 has a deeper, more complete spectrum of sound on nearly every riff. My ears could tell the difference. The CE-2 sounds thinner and more compressed.
To be honest they are similar chorus. The CE 1 sounds a good bit warmer and thicker. I sometimes wonder if confirmation bias plays a good part in all of this. Wouldn't a blind test have been better?
The added function of vibrato on the CE-1 is handy, but the sheer practicality of the CE-2 makes it for me, there is not a lot in the actual chorus. Pat Metheny uses two amps slightly out of sync, he reckons all pedals sound out-of-tune, well this might be the case but it is a major pain to set up 'natural' chorus with multiple amps!
The ce1 is grest...but i actually like the more sterile-ness of the the ce2. ..however i like the the input trim idea on the ce1. I hear Joe Walsh and Don Felder boosted those Deluxe amps on the Eagles records with those. ..cool
Hey, I hope you can help me. I just got my CE-2w (need that Marr sound) and this is my first chorus pedal. Is it normal, that it makes a sort of a low thundery noise when it's turned on, it's quiet but there, even without any other effects in the chain or guitar plugged in (does it then too.)
I'm gonna add this comment until Boss sees it everywhere! PLEASE, and let me repeat it again PLEASE for the love of all the Japanese Gods! ADD the MIX or BLEND knob to this pedal! It is just a critical feature that seriously needs to be implemented to such classic unit! It would add lots more potentials to an already great unit. Especially for recording and in combination with other modulation effects. I beg you Boss! Do this and I will definitely buy 5x of this unit just for my studio on the day one!
I have been accumulating gear also pedals since the mid 70s and have enough to open a store. One thing not talked about much is these electronics are 40+ yrs old. I searched this because a CE-1 I bought for $50 mint condition 15 yrs ago and rarely used just died. 2 months ago a very early Rat died and last year a MXR Flanger EVH used smoked. Any more I display them and keep some on a pedal loop to save wear/tear on the on/off switch. Also, even if you can or now someone who can work on them if you replace a part it no longer ORIGINAL and the $$ plummets. But yeah the CE-1 has soul where as the newer ones can be cold.
just done a blind test guessing random pieces from this vid and thou i never owned a CE-2, i have 100% right answers, the difference between CE-1 & 2 is huge !
Very upset I wasted a huge chunk of money on the CE-1 . There is such a HUGE volume drop in the signal , and a Huge volume jump when you turn it off . It sucks up the sun the moon and five planets . Does not play nice in your pedal chain. Either too distorted signal or no intensity , why would you want to find a middle ground for it to work , when you spend $450 on the pedal ???? the CE-2 matches perfect. The CE-1 is a battle , very unbalanced , sounds ok , but it's too much battle just trying to get a decent Chorus sound and just won't happen...then you kick the pedal off , and your sound volume goes through the roof ! Sorry to say Don't waste your money on the CE-1 . Don't waste your money ! CE-2 By a million miles , the CE-1 is unsubstantiated, unbalanced , tone sucking brick, use it for a paper weight HYPE .
my initial impressions were somewhat true. I had the input set on high and the chorus intensity too high. The CE-1 is very lush and very different than the CE-2 , but there is a substantial volume drop . Very definitely I'm not doing a Mod . Too much bad luck with professionals doing mods. I use a clean boost and that fixes the issue. I will have to do a video soon with the CE-1 and CE-2 ....although there is very little in common with the pedals.
I have been collecting gear since the mid 70s and also remember these electronics are 40+ yrs old. Can you think of ANY electronic device that old that works? My CE-1 cost $50 15 yrs ago mint and just smoked. Had 2 others, one a early Rat worth close to a grand died. Even if kept isolated on a loop or hell, on display, the parts dry up. Caps, diodes, wires, soder etc simply break down. All of my EXH pedals are retired except for some Muffs. TBO for studio work or display is all most pedals this old are good for unless you know or have a strong electronic background. But the catch is IF you replace or change something, its no longer ORIGINAL.
You just need a buffer before it, or do the trimpot mod ... it's all over the internet. The CE-1 is THE chorus pedal. Period. It was designed for keyboards, hence the input impedence/volume drop issue, but it is EASILY adapted to be perfection for guitar (or, like I said, use a buffer). :D
rockanthems Repairing a lot of those units I found out that it's common in some of them that Boss soldered a wrong resistor which caused exactly your issue. The pedal usually doesn't act like you are describing in a normal working condition.
Why can’t they make the new pedal sound like the old one? Lots of times affection for old gear is emotion based, but that old chorus just flat out sounds better.
I had both during the 80's and sold both once everybody got tired of hearing these silly effects. I can't stand to hear them now. They do nothing but take away from the beauty of a good guitar sound.
There is no comparison on depth of sound. The CE-1 has a deeper, more complete spectrum of sound on nearly every riff. My ears could tell the difference. The CE-2 sounds thinner and more compressed.
