As a long time Tube and boutique pedal snob, I love my Helix and have no desire for a plethora of gear anymore. In my 50's throwing my guitar in a mono gig bag I strap to my back and carrying my helix case holds all I need to go direct. My sound has never been cleaner and no one can tell the difference between my vintage gear and my digital modeling anymore. My high gain patches from Glenn are amazing and and I get compliments on many of my patches from crunch to clean and in-between. Helix FTW!
So we've gotten to the point where digital modeling is really great. And just like people arguing over which tube amp is best, there is no "best." Just depends on what you like, what you want, and pick the one that does that. Boss just released 3.0 firmware for the GT, and Line 6 just released 2.8 for the Helix. Things are improving all the time. What a time to be a guitar player! So many great options. And every one of these is cheaper than what I have sunk into my small pedalboard.
Boss gt 1000 sounds great. The Ax8 less dynamic almost bland. The Helix sound full. My opinion means nothing, enjoy your equipment whatever you have. We are so lucky to be alive at this time and to have all these choices.
I am confused. only the Boss and the Fractal sounded like you were trying to match sounds and the Helix was off doing its own thing. I really wouldn't call this a shoot out. All three sounded good doing one thing or another.
The Helix was the clear winner to my ears. The GT1000 and AX8 were pretty close (surprisingly), but I'd say the AX8 slightly edged it for second place.
I think the Boss GT1000 was the most Natural sounding unit & that's what I like. You can hear the real sound of the Strat...No Brainer..Boss GT1000...But if you like a more Processed sound I go for Helix.
Would you rather have a bunch of stomp pedals or the boss gt 1000? I'm a bit confused of whether to add a few stomp pedals to my rig or get the gt 1000
tHANKS for this video. but where can we hear boss gt 1000 vs helix, direct recording and recording via amp and monitoring speaker and frfr speaker or sono, high gain rythms and solo in and out mix. thanks. it avoids buying and returning the product if it does not fit, and if the sound is good it sells So, benefit for everyone
hard to pick one from the tones in this video. Maybe it depends on ease of use for live which excludes axe and total variety range for recording which suggests axe.
Helix killed it this time ...... makes a nice change - I always feel the helix normally is lacking something- can you get the patch sound for this on helix
I have the Boss GTK and have had the Fractal AX8 as well as other Fractal units including the Axe FX II XL .I Bout the Boss Because of the Build Quality and Sound Quality . you can always do a Factory reset and recover your factory Patches on the Boss Some Models of Fractal you can not do this without using a Computer .All the units require that you understand the Layout of the unit in order to get the most out of the sounds .Fractal was Overkill for me and Boss seemed to have enough of the right ones for me
Le helix est le moins exclusif et il me semble le plus simple à utiliser.Apres il est vrai que tous les goûts sont dans la nature.Tous bons mais moi c’est le helix dans sa version lt(aussi complet et plus abordable)Merci à toi Glenn.
All three sound good, and very different... I prefer the AX8 it sounded a bit more three dimensional to me. Th boss was more in your face eq wise. I'm biased against the helix, as I sent two back because of reliability issues. And... to be honest I had a very hard time getting decent tone out of it. It was a shame because I use the jtv guitars as my main instruments. But the helix always sounded very thin and brittle to me even with a ton of top cut off with eq and different impulses.
Hey Randall, I was reading your review of the Katana artist on Sweetwater. I tend to pay more attention to reviews by other sound guys. Is there any chance that you just had a bad one, or have you noticed the same problem on several different ones? I'd really like to get one of these but I've only heard them on youtube. Any additional thoughts?
1. AX8 2. Helix 3. GT1000. Though, I really don't think it's possible to tell which one is better from a comparison like this. The Helix was brighter and louder in the mix, but I'm sure the other units could have been tweaked to be louder and brighter too...
Judging by the comments, I would wager that the guys who prefer the Helix like more processed and unnatural guitar tones. Its pretty clear the Helix has the most processed sound of the 3 - compared to the tone of a guitar straight into an amp, there is way too much many frequencies above 4k on the Helix ... no amp and speaker combo on earth ever made has that much "fizz". It sounds like the tones I would associate with NU Metal ... but what the hell ... different strokes for different folks.
GT-1000 sounds anemic, AX8 not bad but boring dynamically and the Helix shines with power, crispness and dynamics. Maybe the familiarity with it helped?
Sure, I'm allowed to say anything I want to say. It's my RU-vid Channel and I'm not currently signed to any artists agreement with any company!! Truth is, they all sound good don't they?? I guess that's my point about these videos. All of these units sound so good!! I think as guitarists, we live in very interesting times. If you guys are going to be at NAMM in Nashville thins month then please come by and say hello. I'll be at the BOSS Booth demoing the GT-1000 for Boss/Roland.
Every one of them is quite adequate imo. Go with the one that meets your needs the most. Helix has more features, Boss is little less expensive and fractal has got slightly better sound. At last Enjoy making music.
I do not think this is a good comparison. You did not take the time to create the same patch for each product. The only way to do this with just ONE song as you have done, is to choose an Epic song (say something from Hendrix or Pink Floyd...) and then program each unit to come close to the sound and then let the viewer decide which comes the closest. You did a good job playing this song by the way....
Helix has more gain than the boss or axe so evident on certain phrases ! I like the boss for price but the axe is the Ferrari! Look how many artists are now using axe fx ! And for good reason!! Wish i could. afford one!!
Sorry, love your talent, but this video is hardly a fair shootout. the od's were not even, and I have heard the Boss perform superb against the line 6. Maybe try next time to match them to be fair? Thanks!
@@GlennDeLauneOfficial I find that strange because you have a nice lead tone for the helix then you just keep a clean very bland lead tone for the other two. You got a straight up smooth buttery steve via or satch type lead tone dialed in for the helix. Maybe I"m losing my mind I'll listen back.
@@GlennDeLauneOfficial Yeah based on this video you clearly have that Helix dialed in to sound better on the lead tones with some more drive, delay and verb.. Anyone saying anything different is crazy. The cleans are close but I can tell you put a little more Eq effort in on the Helix and that edges the other two out also. I know that fractal in particular can be dialed in to sound way better than presented here. You're a good musician and maybe you didn't do this on purpose, but hell the helix sounds way better in this for sure. I can't believe people are saying the opposite.
Yes not only saying the opposite but many flat out didn't like The Helix. Just goes to show you opinions are like . . . well everybody has a different one. Thanks for watching.

The Gt1000 wins in fx quality The fractal is the best amp emulator The helix is nice too 👍🏻
