Hey, I tried hooking up mine in the front of amp and fx loop, it worked like it was supposed to. I thought my issue was dealing with a parallel fx loop. I think the difference is that, I am using the shortest possible cable to my amp's input. I had my wah, comp and overdrive at the input of the NS-2. The Output of the NS-2 goes to the amp return. The fx send of the amp goes to an Empress ParaEQ that goes to the NS-2 return. The NS-2 send goes to the amp. I was using 2 gates. Years before, I used the NS-2 for my ADA Mp-1 preamp. That preamp was in the NS-2 loop. The output went to another Tubeworks Real Tube II preamp. Stereo fx were used at the Real Tube II preamp. That preamp drove the MosValve!

I’ve tried every which was hooking this up. I like to run my boost section in the loop of the ns2 and run it into the front of the amp rather than the effects return. I had a hard time getting a natural expansion connected the way you describe. Running to the front of the amp sounds way more natural in my rig. Be aware as well, per boss’s tech support, some amps and pedals don’t play well with the buffered loop in the NS2 which produces the squeal many experience running the heads preamp through the ns2 loop especially with additional gain stages.

@@joeyoleary007 boost section is just overdrive and low gain stuff. OP prolly has a regular boost or a "clean boost" overdrive followed by their regular overdrive. an effects loop is a method of routing your signal. some amp have them, some dont. usually an effects loop is between the preamp and power amp, and the send "sends" the signal through pedals (in OP's case, his boosts) and then another cable at the end of that section of pedals "returns" signal back to the amp

Yep, this is the way to do it. The pedal has its level detector between Input and Send, and the gate/expander is applied between the Return and Output. Therefore you want the noisy parts of your signal chain (distortion pedals, guitar preamp, etc.) in the NS-2's loop. Non-noisy FX can go after the NS-2's Output.
@thromboid
@thromboid 2 года назад
...and delay/reverb should go after the NS-2 Output so they don't get muted when you stop playing. Unless you're going for that gated reverb sound. :-)

@kl7360
@kl7360 2 года назад
If you skip from the high gain playing at 5:06 (pedal off) back to 4:44 (pedal on) you can hear that there's quite a big loss of high end right in the frequency range that cuts through when playing with a drummer. You can compensate using the treble and presence knobs on the amp, but if you turn the gate off for swells and cleans like I do there isn't really a way to make it work. Noticed it with my own NS-2 a little while back so I bought a cheap momentary mute pedal and am doing all my gating manually until I can find somebody to mod the gate.

What if I’m using a looper switcher? My looper switcher is connected using the 4 cable method already. TS and NS2 in front of the amp and 4 modulation pedals in the fx loop of the amp. Would I need to rearrange where I put the NS2 and add more cables? or does this not apply? I’m trying to get rid of my amps gain noise without lowering any more gain, cause I am already pretty low. I even adjusted my TS levels and it still has that annoying gain hum.

@FulcrumsEdge
@FulcrumsEdge 2 года назад
if you're using a distortion pedal in front of an amplifier, your amp is amplifying these things in reverse order: the preamp, distortion pedal, the pickups, and of your picking. it sounds like this is more likely due to your own lack of control in using your hands to prevent the other strings from resonating when you pick a single string (you dont have to pick hard in order to sound good. every single string vibration, massive or tiny, will be heard, especially from a novice player. with poor instrument control, you're going to hear a lot of unpleasant sounds. hard picking is likely also is causing your strings to ring in and out of pitch as well because it is causing a string to elongate past normal tuning tension and be pulled up in pitch....) use both your fretting hand and picking hand to help you control the vibrations from strings that you are not playing. if you don't, any minute vibration from any unwanted string movement, WILL BE HEARD from your amp. most of peoples "sound" ie their playing characteristics comes from how they play, not the gear they use to enhance the output tone when they play. if you dont master basic technique, you dont need to be bothering using distortions or worrying about amplifying this signal. get yourself an unplugged guitar, or an acoustic, and listen to how you play, if you hear it doing the same thing without a pedal or amplifier, then you can take a wild guess where the issue lies and an amp.... AMPLIFIES... that to a much greater volume... a noise gate will not solve this issue for you...

Thanks for this info Sloppy Joe. I’m going to re-cable my pedalboard this weekend and follow this routing scheme. I’ve just been going into the input of the NS2 out of my “quiet” pedals (ODs, and a couple quiet distortions) then into input of my amp and only putting the “noisy” pedals in series in the Send/Return Loop of the NS2. Works ok, but I still get noise and feedback from some pedals (ProCo Rat, Boss DS1,etc). One question though; would you put the NS2 after fuzz and Wah since those effects don’t like a buffered signal before them? Thanks again for the vid. And BTW, I think you are funny. Keep it Sloppy 👍

@Petanifer 3 года назад
Guitar to input of pedal. Output of pedal to delay/reverb/modulation then to FX return on amp. NS-2 send to drive and other noisy pedals then to input of amp. Lastly the NS-2 return plugs into the amps input. There is a great article on the Roland website which explains each possible combination with charts. The reason it’s better like this is because with the guitar going into the input it can detect the guitar signal and differentiate it from background noise of pedals/amp. You don’t want reverb and delay with quiet trails being affected at all by the suppressor so you leave them out.
@bastian6755

Still my favourite noise gate/suppression pedal after 20 plus years of use. I’ve tried every noise gate out there and the NS2 has the most natural decay out of all them... for me! Anybody who says they get tone suck are usually the same people that throw a cheap overdrive pedal in front of an amp to make it sound better... 🤔 Yeah, some gates maybe a hair quicker these days but for my money the NS2 is the most natural. All down to personal preferences but the X patter is the way to go with a bit of patience to dial it in. Trouble is people don’t have the patience with more the one knob!

Yeah this actually makes a lot more sense than his method. A noise suppressor is meant to silence string noise and feedback, if you're running all the preamp through the ns-2 its getting way more fuzz than just your guitar would produce. TL;DR The feed from the guitar will have less nose to silence than the feed coming from your pre-amp/head

So if I use my bd-2 and sd-1 in front of the amp and my looper and delay in the effects loop I should put the boss ns-2 right after the bd-2 and sd-1 in the front of the amp right? jose vergara El NS2 suprime el ruido de la cadena entre el send y return, y con esta configuración lo que hace es incluir en la cadena todo el pre del propio amplificador y entrar directamente al power. Saludos.

Guitar -> input (ns2) -> send (ns2) -> Compressors, overdrives, etc -> input of amp -> Send of amp -> return (ns2) -> output (ns2) -> time based effects, modulations, etc. -> return of amp. Hope this helps!!

@@SloppyJoes_ShredShack so if you have the delay and chorus at the end through ther loop, the noise gate will only be on if you have your effects channel on? Is there a way to do this so i can have the nose gate on constantly and then be able to switch my delay and chorus on and off at will? I have an evh with the 3 channels and the effects loop on the foot switch. So far I been using the gate in the front of the amp and then just using the effects loop on the amp for my other effects so I can turn them on and off with the foot switch.

@@SloppyJoes_ShredShack that was going to be my exact question. I'm also building my first board been playing since April 2020 and there's been a fair bit to learn apart from the playing ( power supply, the right board, signal chains, and then the effects amps and speakers used by favorite artists... it's endless) Thanks so much Joe👍

@johnnyo1821
@johnnyo1821 4 года назад
In that case you either can go 1 of 2 ways: guitar - input - output- amp. Or guitar - NS2 input - (NS2 send - other pedals - NS2 return) - NS2 output - amp input. Hope that made sense. Basically the additional pedals are in the send and return loop of the NS2

Stupid question (great vid by the way) but obviously because it gates the unwanted noise, when you play, does the noise come back but in the background? I saw a sweetwater demo and it has really loud hum and white noise but when he activates it it goes, and then when he plays you still can't hear it. Thanks!
@SloppyJoes_ShredShack
@SloppyJoes_ShredShack 3 года назад
Yes that's correct. Its a gate. So, let's say you have a weird ground issue. That noise will come back when the gate opens back up. It doesn't eliminate unwanted frequencies.

@SloppyJoes_ShredShack
@SloppyJoes_ShredShack 5 лет назад
Good question! Basically you're going to wire up the NS-2 the same way but you're going to put the Maxon between the send on the NS-2 and the amp. Guitar -> input (ns2) -> send (ns2) -> Maxon808 -> input of amp -> Send of amp -> return (ns2) -> output (ns2) -> return of amp.
