South Boston (Southie) today is still mostly Iris/Irish-American & it is a REAL tough hood ... drug use is RAMPANT ... children get hooked on Oxycontin and eventually graduate up to Herion at very young ages ... pharmacies are robbed all too often ... Scorcese's film "The Departed" didn't show the real poverty & drug use on the streets (it was still a great film, though) ...

People feel that Boston is one of the most racially-organized cities in America, and though it was really segregated back then, it's on a whole different level that's hard to be seen with your eyes but rather with your job opportunities, education, community advancement, etc.

I grew up on A street D street and one thing that can be said if you were from there is all were close and yes IRISH and family, you protected each other... southie has changed a lot but the sense of family will never die in southie !!!

I grew up in Somerville when if you were Say Somerville and you were in Medford you would fight that person. East Somerville would fight Charlestown and Cambridge would fight Boston . Stuff like that. But The Mafia is still here and alive!!!!!

I agree with you on the point that accuracy is key ... the Scorcese film was great in terms of showing the "Irish Gangster Life" ... my point is that the "average citizen" of Southie is not really touched upon (as it would not coincide with the plot/aim/goal of the film). However, this movie WAS shot on location ... I actually worked on Conat Street (the place where DiCaprio's character lives) ... does that help?
