I find watching form videos so captivating. I was a heel striker my entire life, but I also struggled with plantar fasciitis for years so my mileage never went beyond 30 miles/week. When I worked on running with my torso not sunken down into my hips, with more of a forward lean, hinged at the ankles and not at the hips, quicker cadence, it felt very unnatural at first. But I haven’t dealt with PF in 5 years now and I am able to draw more power from my posterior chain that I didn’t know was available.

I used to heel strike and it would cause severe joint and back pain every time I would run. I retrained myself to be a forefoot striker and now I run pain free. I now know the problem was likely exacerbated by over striding and wearing cheap shoes. Now I'm slowly transitioning to a midfoot strike and my running efficiency, economy, and speed keep getting better. Summary: you do you, unless you are having pain/injury, then consider tweaking for a more efficient gait cycle.

QD: Was actually looking at all my marathon pictures yesterday with some good shoots of my foot strike. I’m more a heel to mid foot striker. It feels natural to me and not trying to mess up too much with my gait. I used the vaporfly 2’s and they felt great and light weight. Even with the water and rain, they didn’t hold water too much! Noticed a little bit of pronation as they are pretty narrow but didn’t feel any discomfort with that! Onward and Upward! Great shot of the pros there at the start line.

Foot striking has always been a bit controversial. I’m a Chi Runner and coach. The fundamentals include: lifting at the crown of your head to level your pelvis, swing arms rearward, fall into gravity and keep your limbs relaxed. Keep good postural and directional alignment and propel using pelvic rotation. Foot strike should be in 180 spm cadence and keep the foot strike underneath you landing your calcaneus bone, 1st and 5th medial heads at the same time. A good and fluid pelvic rotation naturally lifts your heal as your legs are knees down and heels up. Very efficient approach to running.

I switched from a heel strike to a midfoot strike and have since run further, faster, and enjoyed running more. My stride definitely shifts further forward during a race and sometimes even further forward as my calves start to tighten near the end of a race. Just pouting the toe down when your foot comes forward is really all it takes for these elites to change their foot strike to early midfoot if it’s not already there.

Great topic! I'm a lateral mid-foot to heel striker. What may be more important is the position of one's foot relative to the knee at foot-strike. While I hope that my foot is landing directly below my knee, I don't really know. Watching the elite women's start, I was struck by the amount of ankle supination exhibited by some, e.g., Sara Hall, at foot-strike. Fascinating!

QD: Hey Seth, after 3 consecutive years of bone related injuries (metatarsals and hip) along with ruined race seasons a gate analysis recently revealed a forefoot running pattern resulting in high impact to the bones at the front of my feet. My heels were never even making contact with the ground. In an attempt to allow the bones of my feet to properly splay and absorb impact I’m experimenting with a mid foot strike. This will also allow the foam towards the back of my shoes to do its job. Wish me luck!

Thank you for talking about sprinters and 800m runners! Foot strike is dependent on pace. My footstrike on an 800 is definitely different than slogging through a 10k.

This was a great VLOG Seth. People think they are a a forefront striker, or say they are, but in a marathon when you do a slow motion video the results are otherwise for a lot of people, even the elites. I agree, people see that fast sprinters are forefoot strikers, so they think that in order to run fast for a marathon they are forefoot strikers, but the video clearly show a lot of heel strikers. Bottom line, if you are a fast marathon runner, then you are a fast marathon runner regardless of your foot strike, even if it is not forefoot.

i played this over and over freeze framing the footstrikes . I am very intrigued by body mechanics and form,posture ect. That is what I put in the "SEARCH" in 2017 . And that is when I found a wealth of information , also delivered with enthusiasm and love on SETH JAMES DEMOOR! I was a heal striker and my husband would"scuff" his midfoot into the pavement with each step. You could hear him scuffing as he ran.We have both become mid foot strikers. He has really improved his time. We think it will help us protect our knees and hips in the long haul. THANKS for great videos about this topic!

When i bega running to lose weight at 86/87 i was a very heavy heel striker and overstrider and was plague with many injuries, for years until year 90 when i began to use midfoot and forefoot steike and i became faster and injurie free! Over the years i refine my strike and made some adjust!

QOD: I’d like to say that I’m a “modified” mid foot striker. I land mainly mid foot with some light pressure near the heal for most of my running during a race. When I start to become very fatigued and my form breaks down, I will start landing more on my heal. My cadence during a race is usually in the range of mid 180’s.

The foot strike thing reminds me of playing golf, baseball and hockey growing up. Even though I am right handed in all 3 sports I swung/hit/shot like a lefty. Lots o folks (including coaches) tried to encourage me to swing like a righty. Now, many years later, with my own kids that has not been the case. Introducing them to the sports and whichever way seems more natural is the correct way for them. Running is seeing similar transitioning with foot strike. Forefoot, midfoot or heel (whatever seems to work best and feel natural for the individual)

Something I asked my physical therapist about after hearing Jared Ward talk about being a heel striker, was what the “best foot strike” is because I’d always been told to run with a forefoot strike but if Jared Ward is a heel striker, it can’t be that bad, right? He told me it’s so much less about the foot strike as it is the position of your foot under your body when you land. The reason heel striking gets labeled as generally bad is because for a lot of people, in order to heel strike, they are extending their stride out in front of their torso which causes the force of impact to hyper extend the knee and lead to issues. But there’s plenty of runners who’s body geometry that lends itself to heel striking while simultaneously keeping their foot underneath their body and distributes the force vertically as it should be. I happen to be a forefoot striker anyways, but I wish I was a heel striker because there’s so much more foam back there 😂

@@michaellopour7409 they have in the past. The BAA feels like they own “all the content” it’s weird kinda. They threatened participants and those who filmed, that they would be barred from running future Boston Marathons.., if they didn’t take down their RU-vid videos

One thing to take into consideration ... your foot strike might look like a heel strike when you're running down hill because of the angle.

Not just the view angle, when you are running downhill at slow or moderate speed you have to naturally heel strike unless you are sprinting downhill. For the elites, at their pace, maybe they can still land on their mid or forefoot.

I tried to move more to forefoot striking until I found out it doesn't matter at all. Now I just stick to what feels natural to me. Where you strike the ground compared to your body does matter however.

According to various sports science research using camera evidence like yours something around 70-80% distance runner elite are actually heel striking like your slow motion has captured (especially towards the later miles of the race when initial focus has wandered off). Many self-proclaimed mid-foot strikers turn heel strikers in slow motion camera. Heel striking is often bad-mouthed. I guess at some extreme, heel-striking could be counterproductive, but making first contact with mid-to-heel and rolling forward is perfectly acceptable. Another thing to note is that landing is not under the hips. It is in front of it. The only time when landing is directly under the hips is when someone is running in place (i.e. not actually going anywhere). At constant pace running this is not possible to have foot land under the hips. Slow motion video evidence is great myth buster!

Quite a long time ago I was involved with someone who worked at Newton and so I trained in those unusual shoes…did one trail race in them and my calves were obliterated…but…it pretty much forced me into a forefoot strike and I haven’t looked back…took some serious reconditioning of my legs though…

Very interesting subject. I did 400m repeats a while ago, varying my foot strikes. I’m a heel to mid foot striker. I found that it seemed more efficient for me to heel to mid foot strike slightly. My pace seemed slightly faster/my effort (heart rate) slightly lower when heel to mid foot striking vs mid to forefoot striking. I believe it is because I ran more relaxed overall, when I ran the way I usually run at my slower paces. That said, I probably heel strike a bit more at my slower paces, and get more mid foot when picking up the pace. My take is that if you run quite a bit, your body will adapt to what works best for you.

Qd, I run mid-foot. Race or not. I've never had it analyzed by a computer. Just judging from my normal tread. But it does change some from one shoe to the next.

For races and workouts i use adizero pro and adizero adios pro 3 for workouts and races up to 10k im midfoot/forefoot striker and for longer races i use a midfoot strike uo to the marathon.

I'm really struggling with my pace, on a treadmill I can keep a constant pace for hours, but as soon as I hit the road I'm like a horse who heard a gunshot. I'm trying to slow down with music and breathing but before I know it I'm speeding up again.

I think footstrike topic is controversial only because some think purely in context of best race performance and others priority is more health related. For the second there is only one correct answer but for best performance it is more a personal thing. Professional althletes put performance in favor to health so they risk injury all the time but IMO for the rest of us that's not wise.

I contend most people don't know what their footstrike is. We think we're more fore than we actually are. Unless confirmed by a device or video, you probably don't know.

Too funny! Too many variables! Have you had injuries that make one leg or foot stronger than the other? When I look at the wear on my shoes my right shoe shows outside heel wear, almost no forefoot wear. My left shoe shows a small amount of outside heel wear and also some outside mid shoe wear. My right leg is very flexible. My left leg not so flexible from an ACL injury thirty years ago. When i run on concrete the right and left foot strike sound differently. i worried and worried about this terrible mismatch. But let's talk about results. No injuries in the last six years. I'm consistently winning age group races. I won the Mile High Stair Climb in my age category in both the Soar and the Vert. Please note when you run stairs that your heel NEVER touches the step, its all mid foot strike, maybe even slightly forward of mid foot strike. Recently I won the Cooper River Bridge Run in the 70-74 age group with 168 competitors. Should I be worried about my feet not landing exactly the same? I sure pass a lot of people with better biomechanics than I've got. Trail running is another animal. Your feet are all over the place, bounding, and cutting, and leaping, and dancing through rocks and roots. I love trail running. I almost never fall or stumble on the uphills, but I find that when my legs are tired on the downhills I occasionally have a mishap. My analysis is that I'm not raising my feet as high to clear the rocks and roots. Could also be that I'm tired mentally. The concentration needed for trail running is so much more intense than street running. And I haven't even talked about arm swing. Or head position. Or length of race or run Or mud running. Or different shoes. Or climbing vs flat? How many variables are there? I did the math. 17,461,012 variables.
