The Boston Marathon is not an extreme course, but it does have its shares of ups and downs...especially the first 5K and the famous Newton Hills starting at mile 16.5 and culminating at Heartbreak Hill around Mile 21.
This raises an interesting question about how best to pace yourself for Boston? Even pacing or negative splits seems difficult given the elevation profile. Also, there are many stories about runners who burn out their quads flying down the first 5K.
So, I wanted to take a methodical approach to build my race plan. Therefore, I studied runners of a similar profile in the 2017 and 2018 Boston Marathons.
It provided me with lots of insight...and I hope it helps you as you prepare your plan for conquering Boston!
