I've said it before and I'll say it again, this is arguably the BEST debut album of all time, it had nothing but bangers, can't go wrong with any song off of it. Every song got radio air time.🎸🎸🤟😍
Brad Delp is the most underrated rock singer of all time. He can belt it out with control that NO ONE can match. Listen to the whole Boston debut album - for many years it was the biggest selling debut album of ALL TIME. 17 million+ copies. RIP Brad - he died by suicide in 2007. Tragic!
I saw Brad with Beatlejuice in NYC with my fiancé . He was playing Paul, and he knocked it out of the park!. I prefer his spectacular voice to Mercury's AND Steve Perry's. Brad's death was tragic for humanity; that great performer and his iconic voice silenced forever.
Brad Delp has one of the all-time rock voices which is a big statement. Pure talent. Every vocal part you hear on the track was sung by him. He layered his own vocals and sang the harmonies and backing parts.
I graduated in '79 - this debuted in '76 - so totally defined my coming of age years when there were bands putting out some of the best rock music ever I vote this one song as THE BEST ROCK SONG OF THE 1970s
As this guy said on this podcast - Brad was in the same category as Freddy Mercury, Steve Perry etc. He can do anything he wants vocally in his prime - there were no limits to Brad Delp’s range, this debut album was one of the greatest accomplishments of quality rock music ever recorded and - Brad Delp was unequivocally one of the most gifted Rock Singers in the history of the genre !
The reality that the band or any of the members are not in the Rock n Roll HOF is criminal. Where does Brad hit in the top vocalists? If you ask the common person, he’s in the top 5. If you ask the industry, for some reason people forget he even existed. Not only was he a brilliant vocalist, he was a beautiful human. I still miss him.
That was real music when people could actually Sing! and play their own instruments! Seems like this is the reason so many of the older generation don't think there's any real music anymore, no melody, no harmony no one plays an instrument or writes their own music and has a great voice!
That's why I lead them to Ren. I have restored multiple boomers' faith in the younger generation's talent using Ren as a stepping stone. I am an older Gen X, so grew up with their ridiculously awesome music before the 80s came along with its not quite as but still awesome music. The early 90s also had a big impact on Gen X (Curt Cobain was our spokesperson).
There are so many new bands and artists that are wonderful singer songwriters. They're going to be more independent because the methods of recording, without being manufactured by a label, is much more expensive. Check out some of the more well known newer artist like Gary Clark Jr, Alan Stone (his story is incredible btw), Billy Strings, Chris Stapleton, Grace Potter, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Nathaniel Rateliff & the Nightsweats... the list could go on and on...
Should be noted for the record: This is NOT just an "extended note" at the end, but an extended note that hits FOUR DIFFERENT OCTAVES at the same time while holding onto that note.
Ok, so as a producer, you need to know this whole album. Tom Scholz is the guitarist, but he produced this entire album out of his basement. Many of the effects for the guitars, bass, and vocals he created and electrically engineered himself. Then that's Brad Delp. Brad's voice is transcendent. It was a sad day when we lost him. More Boston.
Brad Delp had such an amazing voice; beyond the octaves that he seemed to hit (and hold) with seemingly little effort, I always thought he was other-worldly. Like so many before him, the music that drove him was also what finally took his life. Rare talent like his was rare.
I grew up in a town north of Boston. In the summers I worked for a landscaper. We used to cut the lawn at the home next to the Boston drummer (R.I.P. Sib Hashian) home. Many Fridays we’d sit on the curb eating our lunches in the sun and hear Boston rehearsing in the basement. Such warm memories thanks for the reminder. Long live Boston
The writing and production of this song is absolute masterclass. Listen how smooth guitar fade-outs blend into Brad's voice. This is nothing but amazing.
Brad Delp was one of the top singers ever. I can see your comparison to Mercury. Just his range and incredible ability to hold a note forever. Boston will always be one of my top 5 bands.
Tom Scholz was a musical and engineering genius to wrote, played the instruments, and produced the album almost entirely on his own. But his true genius was getting Brad Delp as his vocalist. Delp had a voice range and variety that was only rivaled by the likes of Freddy Mercury. The results were epic. Foreplay/Longtime is a must-listen pair of songs. The Foreplay part is all about the instruments, But the Longtime section is another tour de force by Brad Delp. There is nothing bad in Boston's very unique catalog of hits.
Tom Scholz, a MIT trained engineer, wrote, played all the instruments and recorded this whole album (not vocals) in his Boston basement apartment. The unique sound came from devices Scholz invented. Brad Delp never gets enough respect as a singer.
Exactly. Sholz had to form the band with local musicians when he got the record deal to prove that there was a band for the label to promote. No synthesizers were used, it was all guitar and Sholz inventions. Obviously, organ and other instruments were not guitar.
Dude, Boston is one of the all time greatest Rock N Roll bands... it's an absolute fact! I know this because I'm 60 years old and a former radio DJ who was a huge fan of this band. Not to mention, I'm from New Hampshire, which is where Brad Delp, the lead singer, lived for years. I remember distinctly, the first time I heard Boston, because it was in the mid 1970's and I was in Junior High at the time. One of my best friends older brothers turned us on to the music, and I've never been the same since. In fact, this band is one of the reasons I became a Disc Jockey... true story.
There is nothing by Boston that DOESN'T pop. You'll start to notice that Boston sounds like a lot of other bands, and then you find out that they all actually sound like Boston because Boston pretty much invented the modern rock sound/style. You can close your eyes and throw a dart at a list of Boston songs and every single time, you'll choose a winner!
One of the greatest rock bands of all time!! Omg we blasted every Boston song on this album when we were in high school. The 70s were IT and Brad Delp is the GOAT right next to Steve Perry!! RIP ❤
I discovered Boston band from my uncle, circa 1987, and I remember him telling me that maybe just four people in the entire world could do what Bradley Delp did singing in Boston. This band remains as one of my favorites ever since, as I came to listen to their first three albums almost at once and it blew my mind.
For GOD's SAKE, please grab their debut album and react to the STUDIO version of EVERY song on the album. You will NOT be sorry. Absolutely stunning. Foreplay / Longtime is a MUST !!!
Brad Delp was the voice of Boston. He passed away in 2007. Tom Scholz essentially created the band while finishing his masters at MIT. He invented the guitar pedals that let him play effects and make the "Boston sound". Most of the first album was recorded in his basement on equipment he invented. I knew he was an inventor, but Wiki filled in the gaps for me about the extent of his creations. "Don't Look Back" is my personal favorite Boston song, but I grew up with them, and love tons of their music. I don't think it's too much to compare Delp and Mercury. They were amazing artists, and we're all better off for their music.
I'm here for Boston. Crazy story behind Boston is the guy who started it, Tom Scholz was such an artist that he never could see when his creations were complete. He would drive the label crazy because it took him so long to finish and album. He always thought he could tweak it and make it better. Took him years.
It's funny how he is singing about loosing himself in old songs bringing back memories and getting lost in the music and today we are doing the same with their music.. 😅 I love Boston. My parents did a great job in introducing me to GREAT MUSIC! Thank you!
Tom Scholz was a fucking genius, like MIT genius, and did this entire album, pretty much himself, in his basement on old ass recording equipment. One of the greatest albums ever then at that
@mrhyde119 stop what? Steve Morse (Kansas) & Bradley Delp are certainly in that same wheelhouse of amazing singers of clean vocals with outSTANDING high ranges. If you're saying that Kansas isn't in Boston's class, at least in terms of vocals. I'm a fan of progressive rock, so I take Kansas' musicianship over Boston's all day. Miracles Out of Nowhere or The Wall or Cherokee Anthem are great prog rock tunes, while Dust in the Wind of Carry On scratch the classic rock itch (even though Carry On is ALSO a prog rock classic).
The song you were referring to in your opening remarks is "Hooked On a Feeling," which was a hit twice: once by BJ Thomas and again by a band called Blue Swede. Both of these releases pre-dated Boston, who released the greatest debut album on rock history. There isn't a bad song on that album. Of course, 2 minutes of Google research before recording would have told you what I just told you and made you sound way more credible.
Reaction videos to songs they have played and researched don't really have as much appeal. In fact, I was intrigued by those opening remarks. I knew it wasn't the same song but I had a hard time going from one to the other in my mind. He sounds way more credible for his not hearing it before having mixed up the two rather than less credible.
Be nice. I know, I was like... WHO HASN'T HEARD OF BOSTON.... .AND ESPECIALLY "MORE THAN A FEELING"???? But different age - different/different time⁉️ All I know is that this was my favorite song from a very young age until now.❣❤❤❤❤❤
Forever playlist? This entire album should be on it, period. You record music listen to this album from the perspective of technology. 1. No personal computers or software 2. Recorded in a basement on a 12 track analog reel to reel tape machine 3. Many of the effects were built by guitarist Tom Scholz who engineered and produced this amazing album 4. You bring in Brad Delp on vocals which he does all the vocals on the album sonically in my opinion best album ever made still sounds fresh today and it’ll sound fresh 100 years from now every song is a work of art
Just crossing songs off my list left and right! Boston has so many great songs! Smokin, Foreplay/Longtime, Peace of mind, Hitch a ride, & Don't look back are just a few of their more popular ones! Im loving this journey so much!! ❤ And u want to see a drummer with a masterpice of a fro, check out Inside looking out by Grand Funk Railroad!
You are right…he IS the truth! You absolutely can compare him to Freddie…and Freddie would agree with you!! This song makes this 70 yr old feel 17 again! Truth. ❤️🔥
Song in the beginning you’re thinking of was “hooked on a feeling.” By BJ Thomas? Blue Swede? Boston is not that hahaha! This is such a jam! And yeah, they can sing sing 😂
1. Best debut album EVER! 2. Any song off of this album is a banger! 3. Foreplay/Longtime should be your next Boston reaction. Brad Delph was truly phenomenal!
Boston was basically Tom Scholtz, who played ALL the instruments on this album, and singer Brad Delp. You are NOT overexaggerating. He was one of the best vocalists of the time. But definitely a tortured soul. Ended up killing himself. I second Foreplay/Long Time.
For me, this song has reigned for most of my life as the best song ever made. It has several pacing changes and some of the best vocals of any rock song.
I do not think they ever had a bad song, The first album all hits and the most recognizable sound. One of the best and longest concerts I have ever been to.
There is some studio effects here. By the way Tom Sholz wrote and recorded this in his basement in a studio he built. He was a student at MIT. He also played keyboards and guitar.
If I was stuck on a desert island for the rest of my life and could only bring one song to listen to this would be the one. Without a doubt my favorite rock song of all time.❤ Check out Foreplay/Long Time next. ❤
This album takes me back to my childhood when my brother and I would go on road trips with my dad in his '68 Mustang fastback. The Boston debut album would ALWAYS be in rotation in it's ENTIRETY on those trips. These songs just completely encapsulate (for me) a time and place where it was just us, the road, the growl of that V8, and this band cranked to 11. Just an overwhelming feeling of freedom and contentment as the three of us blasted down the highway. I will NEVER not smile and sing along to these songs when they come on.
Pegasus, the drummer with the amazing afro is Sib Hashian, who sadly passed away in 2017. A bit of trivia for you is that his daughter, Lauren Hashian, is married to "The Rock" himself, Dwayne Johnson. Unfortunately this version of the song is promotional single edit, which cuts out one of the verses. I will add my vote to the many many other commenters who have said you should listen to the entire album and react to some of the full-length album versions of the songs on there. This is an incredible debut album, and this is one of the most "perfect" rock songs of all time (in my opinion).
The Boston album "Third Stage' was a changing point in my youth. The entire album was crafted meticulously to simulate the sounds and emotions of a rocket launch, a journey leaving everything behind, and the arrival to the hope of a new world... it BLEW. MY. FUCKING. MIND. at 15 years old.
I was 18 when that album came out. My friends and I were so excited and in love with it. My older cousins turned me on to Boston when I was a little kid. I remember sitting in my Uncle's Trans Am with T tops listening to their 1970's stuff and I was hooked.
@@loristone9242 I had never heard of Boston before, and my 15th birthday was coming up. My dad worked insanely long hours at a cement plant, and I think he was feeling left out of things going on at home. He was always gone, on night shifts and sleeping during the day, and we never really ever connected. I guess he decided this year he was going to get me a gift himself instead of just signing his name to the card. He knew I had started listening to music, and asked a girl behind the counter as a local record store for a recommendation. She gave him that cassette tape. It wasn't the type of music I as into, and I accepted the gift, but honestly wasn't that excited inside, because I had never heard of this band, and my dad wasn't known for his musical taste. Years later it has become one of my favorite albums of all time. Thanks, Dad.
I loved "Third Stage", but I always felt that the vocals were being drowned out by the music. If I could choose one album to be remixed, that would be the one.
For me, this song brings me back to the very first time I heard it. My brother bought the album when it came out. That Era in life will never be duplicated.
Pegasus, this is the first track on their multi-platinum debut album. The audio on the music video is a radio edit of the studio recording (the second verse was edited out). Brad Delp sang ALL of the vocals, both lead and harmonies. The theme of the lyrics is how music is tied to our memories and emotions; hearing an old, familiar song reminded him of a past girlfriend from years earlier. If you hear only two more "Boston" songs, "Foreplay/Longtime" and "Hitch a Ride" are the ones I recommend.
I love how big your eyes got 😂😂thats what brad delps voice makes us react the first hear him he was the goat rest in paradise Brad youll never be forgotten ❤❤❤
Saw them May 17, 1977 in Norfolk’s SCOPE Coliseum. We drove from Newport News. Nine people in a Firebird (yes, really). A dude pulled over in front of us and we had a head on collision in Norfolk. We WALKED the last couple miles to the concert. I had a busted lip from hitting the windshield. Grain alcohol being passed around in the concert kept the lip clean before a 2 a.m. hospital visit for stitches. GREAT BAND & CONCERT. Ahhhhhh…the 70s! 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
Scene Boston back in 1977 , the singer hit all the high notes, !! they played so loud my ears rang the next day! Every song on this LP is Great , Please do HITCH A RIDE next by Boston
The song you were thinking about and sang is called Hooked on a Feeling by Blue Suede. But back to Boston, you will love all of their music. You need to listen to Kansas, Chicago, definitely Journey, REO Speedwagon. Alot of great left for you to explore
