@@AtelierSandrineMaugy ok a total beginner question if I may? Would you always use a light grey wash to do your shadow areas before adding color washes?
@AtelierSandrineMaugy
@AtelierSandrineMaugy Год назад
You may :) A light grey if the subject is light like this rose petal, a dark grey if the subject is darker. The grey needs to be strong enough to show through the colour layers but delicate enough to alter the overall colour without making the subject dirty. I always mix my own shadow colour (as shown in this tutorial) and never use a ready-made grey.

@@AtelierSandrineMaugy Thank you! This really is so exciting and fun! I never thought one could do that shadow and then come in with color. You literally have helped so much!

Just found your channel. Suggestion. Can you keep the reference photo on the top right or left of your screen. It helps to see why and where you apply the paint.

Hello, thanks for the suggestion... There wasn't a reference photo though. The Rosa Mundi photo I showed at the beginning was just to show the rose to viewers in case they didn't know this particular variety, but I didn't use it to paint the petal. The only reference was the pencil sktech you can see behind the painting.

Hi Sandrine, I see you do tonal studies for even the small projects, is this something you always do? I’m fairly new (2yrs), but I do paint several hours a day. I always do tonal studies for large projects because I’d be lost without them, but I tend to skip them them for smaller studies. You’re highly experienced and yet you do the small ones. I would love to hear your feedback on tonal studies and if this is something you always do before you paint anything. Thank you. I loved this tutorial ❤

Hi Katherine, For something like this petal I wouldn't necessarily do a paint study if I new I could paint the petal in one session. But as this is a tutorial I did for Patreon, I always show everything to my subscribers and the tone study is helpful as well as being a good exercise in tone for beginners. Apart fron that I usually take the time to do a tone study as it is a good way to get to know your (live) subject.

Hello ma’am, so do you first draw out tour sample before doing the real illustration? I see the one in the back with the color swatches ? Are those the colors you mixed to know what the colors you will use?

Hello, I first draw in the sketchbook then when I am happy with my drawing I transfer it to watercolour paper. I have a video that explains the process: "How to transfer a drawing using TraceDown paper" I think it's called... The one in the sketchbook is used for a tone study and colour swatches.
