As a beginner I was really intimidated about learning flash photography, until I saw this video! Such a big difference a little bit of gear and technique can make. Thank you for making it so accessible!
Now this i how all tutorials should be, you are a natural teacher, Booray, please post more of these videos for newbies like myself... i had this flash in the past, got rid of it because i didn't know how to properly use it. just bought it again for my x-h1 and x100v... thanks alot
I've watched hundreds upon hundreds of photography videos, especially those using flash. You've never shown in my searches till today. Enjoyed the video it was short but very informative. I found Neil Van Nekirk 5 years ago and adopted his "black foamy thing." I use the flashes small bounce card if I need to throw light forward. I also use the TT 350C to bounce flash. I've bounced with the wall 15 ft in the back and the subject 3 to 7 feet in front of me with excellent results. Try maxing out the flash zoom when bouncing it seems to add a little length to the bounce.
Thank you so much for posting this. I love the x100f...just got it...but needed a small flash for indoors wt not so good lighting. Your video really helped me alot. Going to definitely order the flash and the card. 😌✨✌🏼
This is great, but I missed where you talked about the camera's settings when using the hot shoe flash. Can you comment on how exposure triangle settings need to change?
I called you in regard to using a Nikon flash with a Fuji transmitter and receiver and you told me that it wouldn’t work. So I purchased the Godox TT350 and received it today and it is everything that you said it would be. I am totally amazed with how good it is and how easy it is to work with. Thank you so much and please keep the videos coming - they are great!!
I got the Godox TT350F about two months ago. I've been taking photos since the mid 1970's with and without flash. I've used more brands than I have fingers on one hand. Maybe two. Anyway, it amazes me what you can do with this little flash. The one thing I've done is bought some NIMH batteries. That really improves the flash recycling. Bumping the ISO also helps. But I don't go to extremes. In summation, buying this flash was $80.00 excellently spent! I'm sure you get wonderful results with the Demb Flip-it. I use paint swatches (an incredible variety available) and Velcro. Both from HomeDepot.
Very helpful. And, since I already took your suggestion about the Godox and wireless trigger, I am now better prepared to venture outside my comfort zone. You are correct. A little effort is required to adjust to using the flash. However, after playing with it off and on, it really is getting easier. Again, another really helpful video about the X100F uses and techniques. Wayne
You don't mention it but in another video I watched the presenter suggested that when bouncing from walls and ceiling one should zoom the flash focusing all the way out, so a narrower but stronger light. If it were I, I'd zoom and up the ISO to allow the increased sensitivity of the sensor to catch more light.
Great video thank you very much. I’ve been using the Nissin i40, Which looks to be similar to the one you have, except it rotates 360°. Also when the numbers wore off on the dial I sent it to them to have the dial replaced and they sent me a new flash for free With no charge for shipping!
hi booray, thank u for the wonderful tips for using flash on the x100f. If you don't mind sharing, where can i get the same bounce card as the one u used in the video?
This is a great video and I am watching it for the 3rd time. My problem is shooting groups of 6-8 people in a large, open room, and walls and ceilings are far away. So, I use a bounce card similar to yours, but I still can never get it looking right. I think it's perhaps my flash compensation. Usually, I am in manual, likely f4, 3200, then adjusting light output. I have a 10 percent keeper rate. I stink at this.
Yes, that's gonna be the case when you can't bounce behind you. The flash just can't send the same light to the edges that it send to the middle. The best you can do is to turn the people sideways and try to make the group as small as possible. :)
Extremely helpful video! Great explanation and demonstration of what you can do with a simple small flash and white card and flash placement/positioning. Extremely practical and helpful!! Thanks Booray!
I found flashpoint zoom mini also turns 270 degrees. In their adorama website, the image showed 360 degree rotation. You mentioned 270 for tt350 and so was confused whether flashpoint gave that option. But finally found that it does not. Just thought to update you as I had previously commented that flashpoint turns 360.
Thanks so much for this highly informative, very well delivered and enjoyable video. I really like the fact that you appreciate that not all of us are hipsters using this camera. So the cool factor is nice, but this great little flash is even better!
You can use this flash technique with any camera that has a hotshoe. Try using it with the Godox remote controlller to use the flash off camera for better lighting.
Good instructional vlog for those wanting to venture into flash. I use two of these small flash units along with the Good Xpro trigger on my X-T2 for my product stock stuff and its a very easy system to use. Surprisingly and I don't know why but the same units that are branded for fuji also work on my Nikon D800e although its manual and not ttl which is what I prefer anyway. I also use cactus but the Godox is better.
Nice video. One can learn small things watching your videos. It would be amazing if you could do more of this but with you Canon gear. Tricks and Tips. Regarding your topic here I was doing what you suggest of using the flash over the shoulder but just because I thought it was better by applying common sense and logic. I am amateur.
Your content is so cool. Can i ask you 2 questions, cause i'm newbie in using flash. 1. How abou shooting vertical, which direction should we head the flash to. 2. How about shooting portrait at street. There is no ceilings to bounce.
When you she vertical you just rotate the flash head so it still points behind you. On the street it gets more difficult, then you have to move to off camera flash. 😁
i was always scared to try flash and just believed in natural or ambient light photographs. I would edit pics with high iso and try to remove grain. But this is first video which makes me convinced to get a flash unit small enough to go with my fujifilm X-E4 just as it goes with X100 F for you. It was X100 F which I used of a friend and started loving fujifilm and so just recently got X-E4 with 27mm. The bounce flash behind quality is like studio photo! wow! Thanks for sharing this. So for Fuji you keep iso around max 1600 when using flash?
@@BoorayPerry so without flash, at iso 3600 it will have evident noise as seen in your video, but with flash on, the noise of 3600 iso is not seen. Its like 400 iso output due to flash?
One more step forward: Off camera flash! We can switch our in camera flash to "C" aka Commander mode. It will flash just a little bit. But ALL the modern system flashlights can operate as optical slave. That means, when they "see" a flash, they fire immediately. This is the cheapest (0 USD) remote flash controller.
Very nice video. The one question that I do have is, when you are bouncing the light off the walls, don't you have to be careful as to what color the walls are? Thanks, Bob
Great video. All your stuff is helping me become better at taking pics. One thing about bouncing the flash and diffusing it. Don’t you usually need a wider aperture when you have a broader, less intense light source?
Nope! You have to remember that the amount of flash is metered by the camera. If you put a diffuser on your flash the camera knows that because it sees less light and it turns the flash up to compensate.
@@BoorayPerry Thanks. I get such inconsistency with flash that I seldom use it other than bouncing off the ceiling. But your video has given me lots of new things to think about, especially aiming the bounce behind me.
can't find the dim flip-it bounce card anywhere on your website. can you provide a direct link? also, any advice on how to update the firmware? My MacBook pro won't open the software download package as it says that Apple cannot verify that the software from Good is malware free. Any suggestions? The instructions for the TT350F don't list the x100v as compatible with this flash, so I guess that a newer firmware update has included the most recent fuji cameras such as the x100v and the x-t4 and t5.
great inspiring. just one question: you said first that you could not turn the flash towards your left shoulder. But the last samples you explained as having shot with bouncing backwards over your left shoulder. So was that another flash gear or what? Anyway, great stuff to learn from. Thanks.
I can turn it left 90 degrees but not any farther. It worked for that shot because she is facing that direction. For a shot where she is facing the camera it would not light her whole face from that angle.
Thanks for taking the time to make these videos. Question: what size is the Demb flipit, the 3x3.5" one or the 4x4.5"? And can you get similar results with the built in reflector? Thanks
It's the smallest one the make. You can't get the same results because the built in reflector is on the long end. You can get some of the same results but you can't bounce to the side.
Yes, you may list every piece of gear on your website but it's not a plain list. Because of all the links both ( Pie-Hole and AdBlock ) are filtering all of the links out. Nice idea just the way it's been implemented makes it difficult to actually seeyour gear. I did purchase the TT350F from your favorite GODOX supplier so thanks for the heads up. All the equipment links from your web page, not so much.
"Read the manual" is my best advice. I sometimes set a manual by my computer and whenever i need a break I just pick it up and flip to a page at random. I've learned so much that way. :)
Is the tt350f truely ttl? If so, can you explain how to set up in x100vi? Would the camera recognize this flash? I have the light pix and I hate it doesn’t rotate for portrait orientation.
Yes it is truly TTL. It shouldn't require any setup on the camera although I haven't personally tried it because I'm still waiting on my camera to arrive.
@@BoorayPerry thanks for the quick response! Last week I was able to stress test the x100vi at my neice’s sweet 16, it’s definitely not as good as my q2 but is pretty mighty. I decided to go barebones and relied on built-in flash and many pictures had red eye. Forgot to turn on red eye removal. I’m not a flash user myself as I usually shoot close to wide open. It’s my first Fujifilm so I can’t comment how it compares to the previous version. IMO - it’s probably not worth an upgrade from the V. If you’d like to see the gallery, the exif is visible. I took many with and without flash. Let me know. Btw - your videos are very informative, there are not many like you so keep them videos coming. Thank you
@@ClashingwithTofu Whenever I use the built in flash, I shoot black and white so you can't see the red eye. :) I know it's not a big upgrade from the V to the VI but I love the increased megapixels on my XH2 so I'm looking forward to that on the VI. Thanks for the compliment on the channel!
Watching this again over a year later and it is a great reminder. I also have used the digital zoom when traveling to get a 50 mm and 70 mm equivalent image on the spot and have been very happy with the results. Which digital zoom setting did you use for these images?
Wow I love the detail you went into. Thank you very much for it. I do have a question though. On your podcast I listened to every one of them and you talked about bounce flashing at one point. I don’t remember which one it was but can you explain whether you go with a tight or wide zoom on the flash head? Or does it purely depend on distance you are from the wall? Thanks so much for this one little detail. I love this channel and your podcast.
Excellent Video. Will the TT350 compatible with Godox XPro-F? And which one do you prefer X1T-F? I hear the interface of Xpro-F is simpler. And the price difference is 30 bucks or something.
Good video. But...what about camera settings when using the Godox flash? Does it have to be used in manual mode ? How about auto mode ? How well does the flash communicate with the camera?
Question: i don’t love the raccoon eyes when the flip it is pointed straight up. If you angle it, say, 45 degrees forward, will then help reduce raccoon eyes?
Does this do ttl with x100 series. I got the trigger but when I set it to leaf shutter in settings it only has manual power. I’ll buy a godox made for Fuji if it is ttl with leaf shutters
Hey Booray! I have learnt a lot from this short tutorial, and much appreciated. I wanted to know if you kept your iso at 1600 for all the images? And also, what would be the lowest iso that you would take it down to for this particular flash?
I stayed at 1600 for all of the images. I suppose I could shoot at 160 with this flash provided it had enough power but I'm never in a situation where that is a good choice unless I'm outside on a bright day and just using the flash for fill.
Ernest McCreight No, but this trigger will take care of that. Godox TT350F Flash with X1T-F Trigger for Fujifilm Fuji Cameras GN36 TTL 1/8000s HSS 2.4G Wireless Transmission - with Color Filters and PERGEAR Cleaning Cloth www.amazon.com/dp/B073RC9RWM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_0n1xDbP7XQV7Z
@@BoorayPerry I will try Sir. Just checked and found flash not available at my region. godox v350 with almost same specifications and inbuilt battery available at double cost. But for now just exploring the new camera and then soon will move to flash. It seems so promising to use flash after I saw the video and if reflector is not so much needed and bounce from all works, its great!
X-T2? It's really a question of preference. This flash is smaller and lighter but won't have the power of a Godox Ving flash. It really depends on what kind of work you are doing. For weddings, etc I would want the big Ving boorayperry.com/boorays-gear/
Very cool! Thanks much for doing this. As a complete newbie to accessory flashes, does this flash and bounce set up work on a canon 77D and a 6D? That’s what i currently work with though i’m thinking of adding in a Fuji x100 for fun and travel.
Yes if you get the one that is designed for Canon cameras. However, I wouldn't get this one. This one is really designed for a very small camera. going to put a flash on a full-size camera I would use a full size flash. Take a look at what I use at www.Boorayperry.com/education
Thanks for the video! Do you think similar results (to the last set of shots) could be achieved with the flash over your shoulder and with the (provided) diffusion dome, instead of the Flip-It? Thanks again!
i travel with my x100f (often will have the TCL and WCL with me as well) with my wife and want to take environmental portraits when visiting cool places. I have the tiny rogue flashbender and I guess i mount that long ways as well. I have been trying to figure out how to soften the light as when shooting outside there are no walls to bounce off of. I use the godox tt350 and have the remote triggers too. I am comfortable with umbrellas but don't really want to travel around and setup with umbrellas for the quick portrait. Any suggestions?
The only way you can soften the light is to make the light source bigger. Unfortunately, with this flash if you try to use a softbox or an umbrella you will lose so much power that it will make it tough to get enough light on your subject. This flash can be very limiting because you sacrifice so much power for size. 😀🙂
@@paulchance9780 Exactly. :) You just have to accept that this camera isn't designed for that sort of work. But what it IS designed for it does wonderfully. :)
