Hi Rob, many thanks to you for these latest videos on flash! Previously I had never been a great fan of pop-up or off-camera flash, but many years ago used soft studio flash for product on medium format transparency film subsequently making prints via the Cibachrome process. Thanks to your tuition I now have had good results with both, even black backgrounds for some red and blue flowers with green stems! Again, your brilliantly delivered and highly informative tutorials have given me greater insight to my photography with the EM10mkII, I am truly grateful. Being amazed by your prowess with hss & ttl my Godox 350 with radio trigger arrived yesterday so I'm looking forward to further successes! All the best to you, another Rob

Rob, first…… I really appreciate the time you put into making your videos, secondly…… it’s great to have someone like you sharing knowledge. I recently got a similar setup (different name) Flashpoint zoom mini and the R2 radio transmitter for my Fuji X-T2 and it works just fine. @@RobTrek I gotta tell you, Rob, the AD600 is the Cat's Pajamas - incredible! To be honest, I got the equivalent Flashpoint XPLOR 600 HSS TTL R2 (on sale) at Adorama because it had significant "extra stuff." It still uses and communicates perfectly with my Godox tt685 and TT600 speedlight and the X1 trigger etc. Even so, the the 499 price tag was a HUGE outlay for me. I am beyond happy and amazed with what it can (easily) do. Not falsely rationalizing/justifying or deluding myself on such a big expense -- This is a wonderful investment I should have made long ago. So, NOW, I can easily light up the front of a backlit, tree covered, or North-facing home for real estate photos. That means I do not have to schedule as closely with the time/position of the Sun. I did go ahead and add a really lightweight Photoflex UM-ADH45 reflector for GIANT spreads (also amazing). That's my 2¢ on the matter. Good luck to you.

Nice tutorial! I have something to add: You can mount a TT600 on the X1T and still use HSS. Put TT600 to HSS mode and turn off its radio (M mode), then switch to HSS on X1T (HSS on both devices). I do this because TT600 won't allow the camera to do HSS when it's mounted on the camera's hotshoe. Saves me from buying a TT685 or TT350!

Thanks for another interesting video. I bought the V350 flash a little while ago and have been pondering the X1T or Xpro triggers. I think you've sold me on the X1T for the hot shoe facility. I have wondered if you mount the Godox flash on the camera, could you use the X1T as a receiver (rather than a trigger) to operate a remote manual flash? (Having just typed that I'm thinking why would I do that when I could just follow what you've shown in this video?)

Thanks. The x1t is transmitter only. Any other "rig" to make it work as a receiver would be redundant.

If I want to use two flashes (Master flash on camera), I don't use the X1 transmitter (although I own both an X1 and Pro triggers). Instead, I control my second (off camera) flash using the transceiver built into my Godox/Flashpoint (I use both brands) in the on-camera flash.

Hi Rob! I love your channel and your videos! Excellent, to the point and very explaining! I have a question regarding Godox TT350o and Olympus if you can answer me please. The channel number (1 to 16) you can change when you press the SLAVE button does it has do anything with the channel number in Olympus? I mean when you set the RC mode to ON in Olympus and the press the OK button instead of Super Control Panel you get a menu regarding the flash groups. What I am trying to say is I wonder if it can function as an off-camera flash with RC mode ON and having the same channel number set in Olympus and in Godox. Although I have tried and changed channels and modes (TTL, M) I haven't any luck in getting the flash to fire.
@RobTrek
@RobTrek 4 года назад
Thanks. The RC mode is only compatible with Olympus Flashes. You will need the x1t radio trigger to fire the tt350o off camera reliably. There is an unreliable optical trigger on the tt350, but it's a "dumb" trigger and you'll have to set the power manually.

Excellent tutorial. I have a couple of questions/observations. 1. All portraits with pop-up flash or any undiffused flash give a certain result. To me...it always looks like the person has been "added" to a landscape picture. The subject looks "too separated" or like a sticker on a photo. Is there a way to avoid this look with direct flash? 2. I think this is an underrated topic. The size and shape of catch lights in the eyes matter a lot...at least to me. The catch lights I get from reflecting the flash from the ceiling or from the walls are HUGE and irregular shape and to some extent... even predictable, while the tiny catch lights from these small flashes looks so "unattractive"...to me. Still way better than no catch lights at all. 3. Of course size matters. My (supposed) "everywhere" lens is the Tamron 18-400, but it is huge and really heavy. I opted for taking the EM-10 and the Panasonic 25mm f/1.7+Olympus 45mm f/1.8+Olympus 14-42mmEZ+Olympus 40-150mm in my small camera bag and it was still lighter than my Nikon D5300+Tamron 18-400mm. I am sure that same goes true for the flashes... especially while traveling. So...you have convinced me to get this Godox TT-350...LOL. Thank you very much for your time and effort.
@RobTrek
@RobTrek 5 лет назад
Thank you! To answer your questions: 1. Only thing you can try is to manually power the flash to a lower power than needed so it acts only to fill shadows and then adjust the exposure of the camera to allow for more ambient light. 2. It's best if possible to have the subject facing a larger light source like a bright sky or light coming in from windows, etc... to capture natural catch lights. 3. The tt350 is great little flash!

And the only way to get to 1/250, is to set the XT1o and TT350o to HSS. Is there something I am missing? aren't the Godox units supposed to sync with the camera native sync speed of 1/250 without going into HSS?

Rob, I'm puzzled. You're recommending the Godox TT350 and a Godox Trigger. Specifically, the Godox X1T Trigger, with its integral hot shoe. If we need a Trigger, then we must be using at least two flashguns (a Master or Trigger, and a Slave.) Therefore, as you recommend the TT350, I'm assuming your suggestion is to buy 2 of the Godox TT350s? If that's the case, and one of the TT350s is mounted on the camera's hot shoe, why do I need an X1T Trigger, as the TT350s can be configured as Master and Slave, with the camera-mounted flashgun acting as a wireless (Master) trigger for the off-camera (Slaved) TT350? Your configuration appears to be adding extra weight and height on the camera (not to mention cost of the X1T Trigger) for no obvious advantage. Well, Rob, I know that you know this kind of non-studio flash photography inside-out, so I'm obviously missing something. Can you please explain why we'd want that X1T Trigger when one of our TT350s could act as the trigger? I'm assuming there's something clever you've not told us about. Looking at your real estate video, I noticed you hand-holding two flashguns to correct the lighting cast from fluorescent and tungsten room lighting, so I can see a use for an X1T Trigger. You also gave a brief answer in the previous comment. But I'm sure there's more to this that you're not telling us. Many thanks, Rick
@RobTrek
@RobTrek 4 года назад
Yes, as for the x1t trigger, the simple answer is that I'm assuming the viewer has a flash already that is not a godox. This shows them they can still buy just one tt350 and x1t but still use two flashes via the integrated hot shoe. As for doubling the flash, it evens the lighting around the room by pointing them in different directions and in larger rooms the tt350 doesn't really have enough output to overcome all that artificial lighting which measured in 1000+ watts combined.
@rickbear7249
@rickbear7249 4 года назад
@@RobTrek Ah, now it makes sense. It's actually a good point, Rob. Godox's ability to integrate across camera systems is very useful, and saves having to throw out perfectly good kit just because you've changed cameras. BTW, I've been watching your whole Godox series of videos. They build a very clear picture of the flash system's capabilities. Again, superbly simple explanations of a complex subject. Thanks, Rick

Great video Rob. I have 3x Godox TT685o and the trigger. They’re very versatile and excellent off camera but have an annoying trait on camera. When used direct the zoom communication with the camera body is skewed. This is on both Olympus and Panasonic bodies and with both makes of lenses. If I zoom the lens to 12mm the flash goes to 17mm. If I go to 17mm the flash goes to 25mm. If I zoom to 25mm the flash goes to 35mm etc. This causes a ‘vignette’ effect with dark corners in the images. Everyone I’ve asked about it who has checked and got back to me says theirs do the same. The lithium ion powered variant (V860) is the same. Godox are no help. They won’t reply, their customer service is non-existant. Does the TT350o have the same problem?

So I played with my tt350o a bit today and did some research. I didn't find anything specifically addressing the issue, but there is a setting in the c.fn to change the zoom to 4/3. I don't have this on my tt350o, but it is in the manual for the tt685o. Try setting to that and see if that makes any difference. Also be sure the diffuser/catch light card is pushed all the way back in. I'm not having any vignette issues with my flash at normal distances. When in Autozoom mode, my flash does not display the focal length.

Thanks Rob. It sounds like the TT350o is ok then. I might buy one. Unfortunately I’ve tried absolutely everything already on all three of my TT685os. The setting to change from m4/3 or 135 in the menu doesn’t actually do anything functionally. It just doubles the number shown on the zoom setting display to match a full frame camera. (Ie the 25mm setting on m4/3 would then show as 50mm). Users on the Panasonic S1 report the same issue as m4/3. It’s infuriating because the rest of it is so good! Strangely, few seem to have noticed though including many reviewers. Half of those who’ve confirmed it to me had no idea until I queried if they had the same problem and they took care to check. It’s so irritating. If it was wrong by being a step wider angle then that would be fine and wouldn’t bother me!

Give me a scenario where you find this issue and I can test for you and share the images. Or if you have images I can look at and I can duplicate with the tt350o. I would need specifics of the flash and camera settings (exif) and of course we should be using the same gear. I have a Penf, em10-ii, e-pl8, and em1-ii. For lenses, I have the 14-42kit, 12-40pro. I assume the problem is at the wide end, but can try with the 40-150kit if needed. I don't want you to buy a tt350o and have the same issue, unless you just need a compact flash then you might as well get it.

Is the tt350 still a good flash ?

Yes. I just bought another one yesterday! The one in this video finally died after about 5 years of regular use. So I immediately replaced it.

Hot shoe on trigger IMO isn’t important with Godox flashes as one flash can control others.

True. it's only really an issue if somebody was he using mixed brand flashes and happens to really want/need it on camera.

The flash did a crummy job and if it wasn’t a good price I’d send it back. Went through way too many batteries (6) for way too many shots.

Hi speed sync will drain batteries very quickly. Also, I use Duracell rechargeable batteries which give significantly better performance than alkaline.

Don’t buy the X1 trigger, it’s a hateful little unit. Stupid menu system and not intuitive at all. The Xpro is so much better, clear menus and easy and quick to use, because everything is there on screen. Also, the TT350 has a trigger built into it so you can use that on camera and control any other Godox flash with a receiver off camera.

Yes the Xpro is nicer and much easier to use. Still, I like the pass through hot shoe on the x1t. The tt350 will work as a trigger but is limited to 3 groups. Thanks.

@@RobTrek True but if you need more than 3 groups, you aren’t using on camera flash, only time you need a lot of groups is for big complex shots.

I walked right into that one, LOL! Yes, 3 groups is more than enough. I rarely use my triggers anymore and use the tt350 or v1 as a trigger together with my ad200 or ad400. I may have to do a follow up video with the x1 pro and using the tt350 as a trigger.

@@RobTrek That's how I tend to use them but with a ad200 in a smallish softbox and on either a stand or handheld pole. Just sold my V1, hated the same thing!
