'Botany Bay' or 'Bound for Botany Bay' is a classic Australian folk song.
On the 29th April 1770 a British ship named the Endeavour, under the command of Captain James Cook, anchored in what was later named Botany Bay. The first fleet, with its eleven vessels, landed in Botany Bay on January 19, 1788. They carried about 730 convicts and 250 free settlers. Today Botany Bay is surrounded by the suburbs of Sydney.
This song was written about a time when even a small crime could get you a sentence of seven years and shipped off to Australia as a convict. The song talks about this in the first verse and finishes in the last verse with a warning to boys and girls (Dookies and Duchesses) not to steal or they'll wind up in Botany Bay.

These posts always make my day. I believe that music evokes thought, emotion, and that your soul dies without it... I sing to my residents I take care of while serving breakfast and lunch with my Bluetooth in my ear, not even realizing I'm singing half the time, and they yell, "Sing louder!!" Lol. Music is so massively important. Thanks for sharing!!

The Brits dumped the Puritans in America, then they shipped their convicts off to Australia. Australia got the better deal, lucky bastards.

They transported plenty of criminals to America, too. Not as many, but the US was used as a "dumping ground."

immikeurnot At least an escaped Englishman could figure out quickly enough how to live of American land, in Australia the environment is so alien to Europeans that a penal colony didn’t need bars of any direct restraints , anyone who want to could leave...but they were all doomed.

It depends how much she knows about the Wild scene. Asking a girl (or gender non specific person) for a Botany Bay is only a notch or two above asking for a Double Frogman, or even a Rusty Venture.

Woah, nice! I never knew about this song, when I've read the title "Botany Bay" I thought of a Polish sea shanty called Chłopcy z Botany Bay ("Boys from Botany Bay"), which I like very much It's lyrics go roughly like this (sorry for my English) : *_The night falls on Horn_* *_The wind has just laid down in the sails_* *_and over there the corsairs from Botany Bay_* *_keep stuffing their prey_* *_Jolly Roger is already sleeping on the mast_* *_tomorrow with the Spaniard we will fight_* *_and the corsairs weary of Botany Bay_* *_for victory today they'll drink_* *_Sallow Clark raises the cup to his lips_* *_brothers let the toast go down_* *_only Johnny does not drink because a few miles from here_* *_evil sea has tucked him in_* *_He does not lift the cup to his lips_* *_he always laughed the loudest here_* *_the master fencer from Florence struck him_* *_he will not pull any more sheets_* *_Margot will cry in the old port_* *_her lover will not come back_* *_for deserting to his mistress on the Brisbane quay_* *_he had to give his head under the knife_* *_So few of them are left today_* *_Neptun has taken the rest under his roof_* *_even though lips smile the hearts are ice_* *_rum and fear mix in the mug_* *_I think it's the last cruise_* *_struck with a dagger or a bullet to the chest_* *_God for a schooner in the heavens will take them away_* *_all the boys from Botany Bay_*

@TheHornedOne81 6 лет назад
Anthony Monaghan You do realize the reason Khan's prison ship was called Botany Bay is because the Original Botany Bay was a prison colony, right? Got lots of Irish political dissidents, London debtors and the like. Which is what the song is about, after all. Someone who served a 14yr sentence and then, of course, didn't have the money to buy passage back to Blightly. That is, of course, if they weren't exiled in fact as well as merely surreptitiously.

Loved it, Patrick! I remember singing this song a lot during primary school. By the time that high school came around, there seemed to be little interest in the period of time during which this song was written. I hope to see you do more covers of old folk songs. That would be freaking awesome but I know that you deal with an injury that interferes with guitar playing. That royally sucks.
