BOVs hurting 10th Gen Civics. Myth or fact???

Should do a re-test of this "Myth" with other types of BoV's as well, trying a wide range of the most common / popular ones, with Data to back it up or not, would be great to have on hand. It's still a HIGHLY controversial topic across forums.

Honda spends millions on r&d to test every thing on a vehicle. If HoA thought it was a bad idea they probably wouldn't let him test it on a HoA car and provided info on why not to test it.

Would love an update to these myths with the 22 WRX. Subaru community still pushing these stereotypes hard.

I was shown this link after another "BOV or No" type comment on reddit. I hate car forums as most of the time I see innocent questions or comments bring toxic answers and replies. Other L15B7 questions aside, it is nice to learn something new about how changes have allowed the BOV to be less of a hinderance to the system. I have a '19 Si and have been looking to get out of it to get into something more "analog" . One question I have is how this will affect long term performance and longevity of the engine as one person justified the BOV sound being worth the potential extra strain on the turbo . For DD, without tune or other bolt ones, the BOV doesn't seem worth the cost, though that extra HP/Tor is quite a lovely thing. Still a lot of thinking to do, but I am glad I was shown this video .Thank you.

would the torque solution one be a good choice as a BOV?

I've been running a torque solutions dv plate for over 3 months now... in order to run it with no issues for a long period of time, ive had to mix in extra e85. I am currently running the TSP stage 1+ tune. Deff running really rich, but not all of the time, only after letting off of a wot pull. Sounds great. But the car is driving differently.

Great video! Would a bov spacer hurt the turbo or engine? Any detrimental effects? Some say it’s fine others say it’s not good for the car 🤷🏻‍♂️ I just want a feedback from you because you are the honda and tuning 👑

I really liked this a lot. I think it would’ve also been nice to see a test of the factory valve with the tune. I think it would’ve been cool to see those difference to see if the better seal mattered even more when more boost was thrown in.

If it’s meant to work with a diverter valve, use the diverter valve. When I had my 2015 1.8 turbo Jetta I heard about the issues BOVs would cause so I stuck with a diverter valve.

Awesome video. After taking a look at the comments it seems this myth is far from settled lol! I do find it hard to believe that Honda, with the knowledge that it's consumers love to modify and tune their products, would make something with like an aftermarket BOV impossible to use. Most of the threads I've read on the issue come from 17 & 18 10th gens. So I am curious if there is anything different about the 2020 car/ECU? Thank you for the video and the data Bisi. Subbed 🤙

Bisimoto would you get the same results on the bov that is installed near the battery like the HKS SSQV? I ask because you have to reroute some of the vac lines in order to install. I did thus on my 2017 Type R and my car threw an engine code and was backfiring and stumbling so I took it back off. Granted I also have an Injen intake and straight pipe from cat back. It might have just been too much with the other mods included. Interested to hear what you have to say. Thanks!

Btw the LB15 is built with a BPV a valve that recirculates the air the the bov releases thus upgrading the stock BPV with a better bpv

Bisi, I purchased this same BOV for my 2020 Si based on your testing and data collection. It's going on the car next week when it gets to the house. Thank you for dispelling a wildly inaccurate myth in the 10th gen community. I know some people who don't believe that data is paramount to research will disagree with you, but in my mind the map sensors in the intake manifold would read the incoming air when the throttle closed anyway since the engine management doesn't care what happens to the metered air once the throttle is closed.

I found the Rx7 comment interesting how you said that a bov may impact a 3rd gen Rx7 due to old school maf technology. 3rd gen rx7’s don’t have maf’s from the factory they run an intake temp sensor.

Does the HKS mount in a different spot than the Turbosmart? Is there an issue with HKS regarding the myth?

Your video came out good and I appreciate the data. I think what the others are trying to say in the comments is: 1. The fuel/air ratio is being calculated in part by how much air the MAF is reading 2. The ECU is anticipating a certain amount of air to be recirculated through the intake system. 3. Based on the above, the ECU knows how much fuel to deliver. Hence your air / fuel ratio. 4. When that air is not recirculated (atmosphere) you’re left with more fuel since the air that the MAF anticipated to be recirculated isn’t there any longer. This all makes for great sounds and great fuel ratios but the sensors are prior to the air and fuel mixing... the damage is done after that happens. So in theory, this is an incomplete test and not saying it can even be completed at all. You’re seeing ratios of what the MAF is anticipating but where you’re BOV is adjusting recirculating is after the sensors reading. Viewers should also keep in mind that this is a commercial video and sponsorships are involved (I’m guessing). No way, no how would Honda agree with you to put an aftermarket BOV in. They’d have designed it like that or give an option if that were the case.

What adjustment was needed on the Turbosmart bov? Harder or softer to keep the idle stable? Did it work fine at the softest level with factory boost levels or did you have to adjust?

BOV primary purpose is to relieve pressure from building back against the compressor wheel. However a good recirculating system resolves that instead of relieving to atmosphere and maintains pressure resulting in faster response as well. Interested to see the results here…

I had a boomba BOV and lost 10whp. I didn't know what caused my civic to lose power until I took out my BOV. Some BOb will mess with the a/f ratio. Just becareful.

Regardless of the results, nice video, I did have a the blowoff valve by the company that starts with B and it wasn’t running too happy and made the better choice of an intake, so this proves quality matters 🤙🏼

I used to have a 2018 si stock with boomba bov. Since then I upgraded to a 2020 Si tuned with phearable stage 1 and moved the boomba bov to this vehicle. I know you said at the end of this video "the one that starts with the letter B" so it got me thinking, am I ok running this bov on my 2020 si? Or would you recommend either stock bov/different bov?

Where are you located ? I have a 2017 type r with a HKS BOV and HONDATA that is not yet dyno tuned. I’m willing to volunteer my car for same testing since so many of your viewers including myself want to know and see this same test done on.

Get a recirculating kit for the BOV you’ll be okay. It’s a acting factor that does exactly what a BPV does

Bisi, possible idea for another video. There is a lot of discussion about using oil catch cans on the earth dreams L15B7. Some of the most thorough research I’ve seen seem to indicate that it’s unnecessary, as Honda engineered a pretty effective air/oil separator into the underside of the valve cover. Also of interest would be the alleged oil dilution issues some of these motors have had. Personally I think these stories are anecdotal, overstated, and the result of bad habits by the owners. Overall just interested in your thoughts.

I plan on keeping the car on the stock tune. Do you think my PRL short ram intake combined with this turbo smart valve will have an issue? Just asking since your data was collected with the stock intake. Thanks by the way for the very informative video 🤙🏽

Got to say, good stuff here. Lots of questions surrounding this topic for quite some time now. VIt did some testing as well around this and had a much different opinion based on his results. However, your test results show that this can be done safely. The real question I guess would be longevity and how it will perform as miles are put on.

The civic you had for experiment showed quite a bit of power in stock trim. 217pound feet of torque is alot more than advertised. I haven't had my denied yet, but I would be greatly disappointed if it didn't come close to that.

Hi Bisi I want to ask a few questions if you don't mind? First related to your test, why would the blow off valve help produce more power? I'm assuming that because it is holding more boost and assisting to achieve target boost and torque rates? I always like to know the why of things. Also, I have the Sport but play the long game and do not want to do anything that affects economy or longevity of engine. To that end I have built a Supersprint exhaust system but did not upgrade the downpipe and front pipe. Do you ever see going big on exhaust diameters affecting low end performance or the ECU performance stock? I know the Sport turbo is small so perhaps it makes more sense to upgrade the turbo first eh?

Plan is get my clutch done and bring my 10th gen Si to you to get a custom tune... hope that'll be soon!

I'm using the Torque Solutions BOF Spacer and I just had my car stall when I was coming to a stop. Why would this happen? Shouldnt the computer be compensating?

Could Honda have updated the ecu's on the 2020 civic's ? Because the test that where done by others where all on the older 2016-2017 civics.I also have heard from TDI north in the UK that they didn't see any negative results with a turbosmart bov.And they are a very reputable tuning shop.I also heard others say it runs rich after the bov blows off. On another note why didn't you point out the STFT values and only watched the AFR? You can see the STFT jumping up to -16 ~ -25 right after the bov blows off .

To be honest I’ve been curious, I’ve had two act up on my civic sport, boomba & turbosmart, both had scaring on the plug, boomba had deep scars and turbosmart just stop working I live in a dusty environment and figured that’s why ? But started hearing turbo flutters on both after a while, my engine bay is dusty as a mofo, I’ve been wanting to install on my fk8 as well but real nervous

My CVT is jerking and I’m kind of desperate to find an answer. I got a frontpipe, downpipe, BOV, Injen intake and a tune. I already changed the trans fluid, it fixed the jerking and stalling issue for a month but now its back… Idk what to do I’m thinking of getting rid of it.

I had a Boomba BOV on my 10th gen hatchback.. was getting mad turbo lag. Turbo would have a 2-3 second lag before kicking on fully. BOV and CAI were the only mods I had on my car. Obviously took the BOV off

Have you tested the boomba bov? Any opinions or data?
