The bow stance is a kung fu and wushu stance that create great strength, stability and mobility when added to a movement training regimen.
The ultimate goal is to become comfortable enough within the stance to begin adding it to movement flows. The movement patterns that can be used in conjunction with this stance are incredibly numerous. Take a look at any number of martial arts that use forward stances and you will find many variations and movement patterns to experiment with.
Forward stances are used in boxing, kickboxing, karate, aikido, hapkido, kung fu, tai chi, and even yoga.

Random Fact - Warrior Pose is actually called Veerbhadrasana/Veerbhadrasana (Pose dedicated to Veerbhadra) . Different series of Veerabhadra asanas (Warrior 1,2 and 3) that are supposed to develop extreme confidence, strength, and unparalleled power in the practitioner. More - Lord Shiva created two ferocious forms: Veerabhadra and Bhadrakali from his matted lock of hair. Veerabhadra was created to destroy Daksha (Egoistic King and Father of Lord Shiva's Wife Sati) and kill all his army. Veerabhadra appeared so ferocious that his height was too tall to reach the heavens, his complexion was as dark as the clouds, had many arms carrying terrible weapons, and wearing a garland of skulls. Also, Lord Shiva is known as Master of all Arts and Sciences including Martial Arts. 'Kalaripayattu' is currently somehow surviving oldest Martial Arts of the World in South India.

Awesome video I really like how straightforward your explanations are. One thing though you said yoga adapted the stance that martial arts have been using for years. The actual truth is the opposite. Martial artist thousands of years ago adapted yoga and yogic postures for martial application. Either the monks of India or the Chinese Buddhist monks of the Shaolin monastery did this around the year 420A.D. This is documented with the Indian monk Bodidharma Damo’s arrival in China.

Thanks man I'm glad your getting something from these videos. I absolutely LOVE using kung fu in my movement practice, such an amazing system. If you try the bow stance post back with your experience, I'd love to hear it. And if your already using the horse stance try to smoothly transition from one to the other. The flow of these positions has a powerful feel to it!

1. Great video- love your content. 2. I'm not highly educated on the subject, but I take issue with the yoga position having "coopted" the position on the basis of some research in my yoga dabbling. The basis for my position is: Yoga was traditionally a man's workout- women were not allowed to do it until recently in history. Historically, yoga practice would open with a yogi recounting a tale of battle or hunt. The session would then be a practice of martial discipline with focus on forms which placed tension and relaxation in opposing muscle groups- the excellent muscular skill of a fighter. Needless to say, the westernization of yoga lost a huge amount of manliness, and makes it seem as though the elements of martial artistry are coopted, rather than endemic and functional to its practitioners.

Whilst I don't see any merit in which came first there is something to be gained by exploring the warrior 2 yoga pose. It's a stationary form which lends itself to letting weight sink through soft tissues, much like in Zhang Zhuang. The range of bow stances in martial arts also have martial principles, linking with flow and weight and energy transfer. There are also different widths, and hip angles for example with Taiji chuan (which takes a wider stance than aikido). All great arts that are worth looking at holistically and considering their purposes, rather than just looked at in isolation.

Great vids man, it could actually be argued that the shaolin variant came from the yoga pose, as it was meant to have been brought over from india by Bodhirama. but that's just a topic of discussion. Maybe we could colaborate in some way.

Thanks man, much appreciated! Checked out your page, don't meet many iron palm practitioners. Its quite an impressive skill. As for shaolin being influenced by yoga, I remember reading of this history and it seems to fit rather well. Kung Fu has always seemed more like a system of movement designed to balance the body and mind that was adjusted to fit self defense needs. It has more in common with the mentality of yoga than boxing for instance. I once ran across a Tibetan martial art known as Baobom, it immediately stuck out as a less complex kung fu with obvious yoga influence. The practitioner was of the opinion that it was older than kung fu and may have been brought to tibet by indian yogis. Though I have never looked much into it. I would be interested in some kind of potential collaboration, I will direct message you later on today.

You got it backwards man, kung fu got the poses from yoga. Shaolin temple credits learning their craft from an Indian Bodhisattva whose name escapes me, Bodhidharma?.
@jahalgol7460
@jahalgol7460 4 года назад
Bodhidharma didn't invent Gungfu, it was known by the nomadic tribes (For protecting their lands and animals from invaders) outside of the main civilization for thousands of years prior to his arrival in China.
