Hello, 3D Printing friends! Today we're going to implement a REVERSE BOWDEN setup on an Ender-3 V2 with a BIQU H2 direct drive extruder. Depending on YOUR direct drive extruder, you may be able to do this, too!

Yep - did this to my Ender 5 Plus as well. In like knowing that any unnecessary tension on the filament is now alleviated by the Bowden tube. Keep up the great content, Bryan!

For the moment I will stick with the original Bowden drive on my E3v2 - until something breaks or goes wrong with it anyway but I do have plans to fit a micro Swiss to it and make up a dry box that mounts under the bench that holds multiple rolls of filament and use a reverse Bowden like you have , I do this to printer I had before the ended and it worked well . I made a couple of clips to hold the filament to the side of the spool so I didn’t have to muck around with the little holes in the spool lip to stop the filament unraveling - Just unclipped the filament I wanted from the spool trim the end to 45deg and feed it up the Bowden tube - couldn’t be easier ! Thanks for the video Brian 😃

More than allowing to locate spool where ever you want, when fixing the loose end of the tube, the pressure to pull the spool is now atr the fixing point, thus it does not affect the hotend, what it otherwise would do. If the direct drive hotend is not rigid enough pulling the filament with moving hotend causes artifacts to the printed object, reverse Bowden with fixed end at spool side removes that issue.

I tried doing something I've never seen before. I made a bracket that connects where the extruder & stepper motor would be on the left side of a regular bowden setup. Then I mounted the extruder to the end of the bracket at the center of the bed. This allows me to use half as much bowden tube. The next mod I'm going to do is make a swivel so that the stepper motor can pivot at the end of that bracket, allowing me to cut yet another inch of tube off. I'm attempting to get the benefit of less drag/filament compression from a bowden tube but still not add weight like a direct-drive would.

I HAVE A LITTLE NOTE ABOUT THE FRICTION THAT GROWS BETWEEN THE TUBE AND THE FILAMENT WE NEED TO MAKE SOME ADJUSTMENTS TO THE FLOW RATE AND THE RETRACTION SPEED AND LENGTH. NOT SO BIG PROBLEM BUT WE MUST MENTION IT.
@BV3D
@BV3D 3 года назад
That's an interesting observation. I wouldn't expect the friction be any greater than in a Bowden setup where the extruder is _pushing_ filament through the same length of tubing, compared to a reverse Bowden where the extruder is _pulling_ the filament. If it *does* seem to be a problem, a thin-wall Bowden tube can be purchased, with a 4mm outside diameter and a 3mm inside diameter. This doesn't affect performance in a reverse Bowden configuration because it's simply guiding the filament to the extruder. And because of the increased inside diameter, there would be very little friction.

I wonder if one could put a very lightweight anemic direct drive extruder combined with a bowden tube extruder to combine the best of both worlds, keep the hotend assembly light while also having the extrusion control of direct drive. I was so unhappy with my 'upgraded' direct drive, I went back to Bowden tube. I also got rid of the dual gear system because I found I could get my single gear extruder grippy enough to cause the stepper to skip, so I had nothing to gain but banding when I used a dual gear, I assume because of the unique symmetrical way it chews up filament, the amount that is extruded oscillates and lowers print quality. Either that or it increased friction in the Bowden tube and that caused the extrusion variances. I feel like either my printer is from another universe or I am simply ignorant/don't care about whatever advantages those 'better' systems bring. With the tighter Capricorn Bowden tubes, I can even print flexible, but I have to run at a slower speed than I had to with a direct drive. That is the only reason I am curious about some solution that could combine the best of both worlds.

Creality also has an affordable modular direct drive extruder. I'm trying it out now. It is the first mod on my new E3V2 printer, and the printer has not been used yet. This is my second E3V2 printer. My older printer still has the Bowden setup. I am not impressed with the Bowden tube extruder system. Creality's direct drive comes with all the necessary installation hardware parts. The package simply includes a photo identifying the ports on the v4.2.2 motherboard, and no instructions. However, installation is rather straightforward, and could be done in about an hour. After removing the extruder stepper motor, stock Bowden tube, and hot end from the X-axis gantry, I continued to disconnect the prior from the motherboard. Then, I installed the direct drive connections to the motherboard. The connections are identical to the stock equipment. Once finished, I only had to readjust the E-steps which were only slightly off. I need to tweak the printer a bit, i.e. bed-levelling, but everything is working fine. I did not weigh the unit, but I found it light. The only thing I don't like about this direct drive is that the extruder assembly is made of plastic just like the stock extruder. I'd replaced the plastic one for an aluminum one on my older printer after the lever cracked. The lever is notorious for doing this. The plastic extruder on the direct drive is installed behind the stepper motor, and should be replaceable with an aluminum one.

@@BV3D Great. I'm printing new parts to reverse the orientation to make it easier for the wiring on the X-change. They do jam every now and then, but it is really easy to disassemble and clear especially if you can do it on the bench. That is one reason for the X-change. I can rebuild one in less than 5 minutes and can print all of the parts. I have about 12, - replaced all of my Hemera's with these. Max has been great to work with.

For beginners ender 3 v2 or artillery-sidewinder-x1?
@BV3D
@BV3D 3 года назад
Both are pretty good choices, and both printers work well in their stock configurations. • The X1 is larger, more expensive, and easier to assemble, but some people have had issues with the flat flex cables that carry power and signals to the X carriage. There's a new Sidewinder X2 out now, as well. • The Ender-3 V2 is less expensive, but a little more involved to build. It's a good, solid starting point. There are lots of upgrades, either purchased or printed, that let you customize it to your liking, so it can grow as a person gains experience in the hobby. If price or upgradability are the larger concerns, I'd lean toward the Ender-3 V2.
