In this video I turn a salad bowl from a piece of ash using some new turning tools , made in the UK by Record Power. The lathe I am using is the top of the range Coronet Regent lathe from Record Power. The lathe is on loan from Record Power for me to test and it has come with the optional extras of a bed extension and an outrigger for turning large pieces off the side of the lathe.

Many thanks for watching. The new turning tools from Record Power are not yet available but their launch is imminent and should be appearing in the new catalogue and website when released. I will make an announcement when they are available. Cheers Jim

Which is the better lathe, or which would you rather have Jim, Record Powers MAXI-1 or the the new Coronet Regent?
@JimsonMakes
@JimsonMakes 3 года назад
@@cgmcornel I haven’t personally used the MAXI1 so difficult for me to say, I like the heavy duty no frills design of the MAXI1 but I prefer the control panel and digital display on the Regent. The heavier weight of the MAXI1 is an advantage but it is easy to install a shelf between the lower leg stretchers on the Regent so that heavy stuff can be stored on it to add extra weight. The Regent has certainly got a lot of power, I recently turned a 22inch bowl on it without any issues whatsoever. I haven’t checked recently but I think the Regent may be slightly more powerful than the MAXI1. If you get the Regent I would recommend getting the outrigger and bed extension but this does up the price.

@@JimsonMakes Thankyou for the quick response Jim; I'll be new to woodturning, and my logic is to get the best lathe I can, rather than needing to buy another lathe again in a few years! Hope that doesn't seem daft! I have some money put by, so will hopefully be getting a 15ft x 10ft shed, and kitting it out from scratch next year! I used to be a glassblower; and have been blown away by what I've seen being turned in demonstrations, and on RU-vid. Am focusing mainly on 'Record Power' for totting up my wish list / what I want next year; am trying hard not to get too carried away! Definitely feel like I've found a new passion for life!
@JimsonMakes
@JimsonMakes 3 года назад
@@cgmcornel that sounds like a great plan. The Regent lathe is a very good lathe and certainly good value for money. It is very quiet and powerful and should be more than enough for most turners. Remember to allow money for a good sharpening machine ( I personally like the Sorby Proedge ). If possible it is best for the lathe to be standing on a concrete floor, much less bounce and vibration. If your shed has a wooden floor then it may be possible to cut part out and pour a small concrete section or put extra supports under that part. It is surprising the forces generated by even a small piece of timber. Also advisable to clad the shed inside with some insulation, this reduces temperature changes and lessens condensation forming on metal surfaces which can cause rusting on machinery and tools.

I have that lathe and its the dogs bollocks, the tools Im not so sure, I have tried them but I prefer carbide coming from metal turning and have got used to it. I would like to try HSS but Im not sure I could deal with all the sharpening all the time, sometimes every minute on hard wood. The tools look nice, in my view these things at the cost should come in a simple nice box to keep them safe and rust free. they are not cheap and by adding a 5 pound box your not really doing much to the price. they should have done the control box on the Herald the same as this as that was its failing, also a brilliant lathe and will do Records profits well, I bought mine in spain and its superb. No regrets at all, bank manager yes but not me...
@JimsonMakes
@JimsonMakes 3 года назад
Yes a fantastic lathe. The control box is great, they have now added an inline stop switch for the Herald, I think they were keen to keep it a compact machine. I use mainly traditional HSS tools but I will use carbides on very hard woods and resins. I find traditional tools more satisfying and efficient to use on most woods and the more sharpening you do, the quicker you get. I tend to discard all packaging and put my tools in a rack. I know Record Power are looking to reduce the amount of packaging and the new sleeves are recyclable .

Sorry for the late reply. The Regent is not made in England except a couple of components but it gets a full PDI by Record Power before dispatch. I think you can only fit a bed extension to one end, the fittings at the other end are for the outrigger.

Its a really nice looking lathe, but for a $2400 price tag i would expect that lol. But my question on the tools, is there really any difference between those, or robert sorbys, or any other name brand expensive lathe tool for wood? Handel shape and size differences, maybe metal composition differences, but in reality is there much difference? The quality of the cut is directionally equivalent to the ability of the user and the quality of the edge of the tool right? Lol
@JimsonMakes
@JimsonMakes 4 года назад
Many thanks for watching. Yes the lathe is great, here in the UK the price is very competitive for the quality and specification. As for lathe tools, the new Record Power tools are a step up from the older ones in my opinion. Many HSS tools are similar but I have found over time that some hold an edge much longer than others. Some tools also have a poor profile which leads to an odd shaped bevel. I think the Record Power tools will be very competitively priced on release. You are quite right, a lot of it is down to your skill in using the tool. Cheers Jim

Hi Jim. Great video! I'm thinking of investing in a Coronet Regent. You've already answered a lot of my questions. But does it ever have a problem with vibration? Would it need to be pinned to the floor?
@JimsonMakes
@JimsonMakes Год назад
Hi Mike, I have not noticed any excessive vibration but mine is very heavy with the addition of the bed extension and the outrigger. It also has a large tool storage unit on a shelf underneath it which is held between the legs. All woodturning lathes generate vibrations and it is weight that counteracts this. The lathe is very smooth and quiet which is great for me in my little workshop. Obviously a concrete floor is essential but I have not felt the need to fix it down.

Jim I’ve just set up my bowl turning attachment on my record CL3 36x30 and it’s got a bit of a wobble on it…I’m sure there’s many possible reasons for this. But what’s the most likely 👍🏻
@JimsonMakes
@JimsonMakes 2 года назад
As you say could be a number of things. Check everything is tight and if it is on an outrigger, set it up so you have minimal overhangs, this will minimise vibration. Use light cuts when using an outrigger. The further away from the bed you are the more vibration will be multiplied at the tool rest.

@@williamswhistlepipes putting a shelf under the lathe and loading with heavy stuff helps, as could bolting it down. Concrete floor is also recommended as it reduces bounce. I am delighted with my Regent lathe. It is fairly heavy, especially with the bed extension and outrigger fitted. It is easy to add weight by putting a shelf between the legs and installing a heavy duty tool box in which to store heavy items such as chucks and face plates

@JimsonMakes 4 года назад
Hi Adrian, I am loving the Record Power lathe, it is certainly quieter and more powerful and the control panel is much superior. The castings are also superior quality. The extra capacity is also useful, they both have revolving heads but the outrigger makes more sense space wise in my small workshop. The Axminster is a good lathe and I have never had any complaints. It is still early days but I would have to say the Regent has the edge, especially with the addition of the outrigger. I hope this helps. Cheers Jim

I have to ask, was that a weight lifting glove you were wearing?
@JimsonMakes
@JimsonMakes 4 года назад
It is an old cycling glove. You have to be careful wearing gloves when using lathes as they could potentially drag your hand if they get caught. I would only recommend wearing tight and fingerless gloves and keeping them clear of the workpiece. I tend to only wear them if I have to, usually to protect my hand from the hot shavings that come of these kiln dried woods. Many thanks for watching Cheers Jim
