CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Michael Moore questions Charlton Heston about America's high murder rate, which Heston blames on the country's long history of violence.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Filmmaker, author, and political activist Michael Moore trains his satirical eye on America's obsession with guns and violence in his third feature-length documentary, which gets its title from a pair of loosely related incidents. On April 20, 1999, shortly before they began their infamous killing spree at Columbine High School in Littleton, CO, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold attended their favorite class, a no-credit bowling course held at a bowling alley near the school, the same bowling alley which would become the scene of a robbery and triple homicide two years later. While pondering these events, Moore humorously considers the link between random violence and the game of ten pins; along the way, Moore calls on the Michigan Militia (and gets to know some of the models for their "Militia Babes" calendar); spends some time with James Nichols, brother of Oklahoma City bombing accomplice Terry Nichols; visits K-Mart's corporate offices with two teenagers injured in the Columbine massacre as they ask the retail chain to stop selling bullets for handguns; investigates the media's role in the American climate of fear and anger; compares crime statistics in the United States with those of Canada (which, despite higher unemployment and a larger number of guns per capita, manages to rack up a small fraction of the homicides committed in the United States), and questions actor and National Rifle Association president Charlton Heston regarding his appearance at a pro-gun rally held in Littleton a few days after the Columbine massacre, and a similar rally in Flint, MI, after a six-year-old boy killed a classmate with a gun he took from his uncle's house. Bowling for Columbine received its first public screening at the 2002 Ann Arbor Film Festival; the film's official premiere took place a few months later at the Cannes Film Festival.

I think part of the problem is that Moore changed subject quickly. He starts comparing gun violence between two nations with lots of guns (US and Canada), then quickly moves onto comparing nations with lots of historic violence but dissimilar gun ownership (US and Germany, or US and the British Empire etc). He really he should have focused on the like-for-like comparison (US and Canada) and grilled Heston on that.

Michael Moore tricked his way in Heston's home, Moore being an NRA member. He then took advantage of Chucks declining mental state, to push his own agenda. Chuck believed that to ensure peace in the USA, the 2nd amendments right to bear arms, was vital to help the ordinary citizen prevent tyrants or any other force taking the power & freedom of the people away. Whatever the reason for Canada's much lower gun crime than USA, Moore harassed Chuck who was obviously struggling with mental deterioration & died soon after. Regardless who is right or wrong, I felt for Chuck here. I have great respect for his contributions over the years especially in his help promoting equality, freedom & civil rights! RIP Chuck

The answer is our culture. Whenever we try to hold anyone accountable now people are called "Karens." Accountability is GOOD. Americans don't value being corrected. We all think we're right all the time and almost none of us really have our feet held to the fire. 99% of people I challenge to interview in voice chat on the internet run screaming. They say something dumb like 'the earth is flat' or 'covid doesn't real' and I ask to interview them and they run. Americans say dumb things and then run when called out. Other countries seem to value being challenged more than Americans.

America is a vastly different country than those Moore compared. Cultural differences, multiculturalism, different beliefs, different socioeconomic classs...the list goes on and on, huge population, different legal system, different educational system, different values...all of these can and do contribute to the increased instances of violence. To reduce it down to the abundance of guns and the laws surrounding them would be an over simplification of the problem. If guns disappeared from America tomorrow, I'd be willing to bet you would still see increased instances of robbery and violence when compared to the rest of the world.

This documentary made the conclusion that guns aren't the problem.
@yikes7607
@yikes7607 4 года назад
But if the problem is, say, people, then the solution is still that guns should not be abundantly available. It's common sense that if they can't play well, then take away their toys. A wise man once said "bans are laws for the stupid"; in this case not just stupid, but also disruptive and destructive, and they must be governed.
@ctdieselnut
@ctdieselnut 3 года назад
The problems and solutions are far too complex and multi faceted to be boiled down to one or two things. Similar to health care, you cant sum it up to a 3 minute clip. Its mental health, its crime, its poverty, it's the economy, it's a lack of upward mobility etc. There is no one size fits all silver bullet to fixing gun violence in the USA.

I met Charlton Heston at a book signing (Into the Arena) in the mid-90s along with his wife. I bought the book and he signed it, fair enough. I don't agree with his position on guns at all, but just once it was a chance to shake hands, look in those eyes and remember movies like Ben Hur, The Omega Man, and of course The Ten Commandments. It's understandable why he couldn't contend with a Michael Moore interview, with rapid-fire questions when he was mentally challenged. Ronald Regan would probably also have cut the interview at some point.

1. As someone else said, he did not have Alzheimer's until after the documentary 2. He invited Moore onto his property knowing full well of his reputation as an aggressive journalist....either he did or his staff. They always had the option to politely decline. Therefore, he can't cry foul once the interview makes him uncomfortable, especially as he himself extolled a legacy of running around this nation promoting gun sales immediately after serious tragedies. Don't give me this BS excuse they could not cancel due to the enormous planning. Several orgs hold annual conferences every year...some have been canceled due to unforeseen events, yet they don't act privileged and come off as exploiting a tragedy. Sadly, when you have a group like the NRA i.e. one that does not even understand Amendment II, it's hardly surprising to hear of their irresponsible nature. 3. Heston walked off over rather innocuous questions. I didn't consider Moore an overbearing interviewer here. It's clear he merely could not stand his naivete being challenged, which I've come to learn is a textbook example of gun nuts...the moment you neutralize their closed minded pontificating with logic and facts, they get hyperdefensive and walk away.

IMO, all people are equally (potentially) violent : it is just that in the US, guns are MUCH more easlly obtained than in the other countries mentioned : for every 100 citizens, 125 guns are owned. This is much much greater than the UK and Germany. In Australia (where I live ) guns are completely illegal.

This is disgusting. Michael purposely tried to antagonize and argue with Mr Heston from the start. How is he to blame or how should he be expected to apologize for an incident of which he isn’t responsible for in anyway. It’s important to rally in places where tragedy has taken place so the democrats don’t take advantage of it to make more gun laws. Which is all it’s about. Nothing to do with them caring about the victim or victims family. Disgusting to use it for political gain. That’s something to apologize for

I think Moore was a bit out of line here. It just wasn't the right forum, the interview wasn't properly set up, and it comes across more like an ambush than anything. Yes, Heston was president of the NRA and they behaved insensitively in the wake of massacres but you really get the sense that Moore wanted some juicy footage to conclude the film rather than a genuine dialogue with the man. This could have been much more compelling interview if it was conducted in a more professional manner.
