The first guard is the one AJ uses and the second guard was the one Lewis used that would have been an interesting fight to see which guard would have been more effective and yes Lewis said he learned to use the extended lead from the Russians he fought against at the olympics, nice one.

@@myboxingcoach How much do you know about former welter champ Don Curry, he recently followed me on twitter because I posted two of his fights there! In his fight with McCrory I couldn`t work out if he was doing the first guard you showed on this vid or the peek a boo: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-85Cbv3NzRTU.html

Great feature on the guarding position. I am curious to know if the same guarding positions would apply to bare knuckle boxing which seems to be gaining popularity. Keep up the good work coach 🔥

Nice! Coach can you please start doing live reactions to fights like Spence vs Garcia etc. Would love to know your perceptive. Also maybe a video teaching combination punching for certain fighters like their go to moves! Also body punching combinations would be great. Peace from Canada 🇨🇦 coach!

@@myboxingcoach Tyson actually modified his peek a boo guard by the tim he became champ he actually held his gloves below his chin pressing them together like Floyd Paterson did and they would both throw hooks from where their hands were, this meant both men had a better center of gravity than when their guards were held higher, cheers.

How to fight a taller boxer? Peek-a-boo is recommended for shorter fighters?
@rainbowdash9388
@rainbowdash9388 3 года назад
Peek-a-boo is really energy intense, and might not work for everyone. What most people do is develop a really good blocking and head movement game and walk them down

Great video as always Fran! I love it. A couple of questions. First: It seems that your torso is very exposed to body shots in the three guards you mentioned, how do you respond to those kind of shots from these guards? Second (and this is more a proposal for a future video): AIBA has removed helmets from amateur male senior boxing based on a huge survey that found it to be more dangerous to fight with a helmet. I like this scientific approach and the data is solid. My club however (and I think in Denmark in general) seems not to accept the idea that fighting without a helmet is safer - for example we still use helmets in sparring. I actually wrote about this to the chairman of the danish amateur boxing board but got a really sour reply. So my question is: what is your stance on this whole debate and should we be using helmets when sparring?
@myboxingcoach
@myboxingcoach 5 лет назад
Hi Bjorn. You're right, my elbows flare a bit in the basic stance at long range, you are right. At close range (due to the guard shift) they come in a bit more and can be made to block those hooks more efficiently. On the headguards, I read that research too. We still use headguards in sparring and always will (reducing the risk of abrasions and cuts. There is a human factor that you may be overlooking in sparring - YOU as the controlling coach. You are as the coach controlling the punch power and intensity of the boxers, reducing the risks of concussions - that doesn't happen in a bout. Headguards remain in place for junior boxers, but I sense that that may change in the coming seasons.
@BjornFriborg

@@myboxingcoach thank you so much for your enlightening answer. I guess I have overlooked the human factor because our club spar really hard.

If your hands are touching the face then if the opponent hits your hand then the kinetic energy will be transferred straight through the hand to the head, like Newtons balls, would it not be more scientific to keep the hands a few inches away from the face and semi rigid to absorb the opponents punches thereby reducing any form of impact to the face/head ?
@VolcanicBamboo
@VolcanicBamboo 2 года назад
I think with the newton balls is they're hard, so the force transfers bewteen them with minimal dissipation like a hammer on a nail. Where as your hand is slightly elastic plus your glove has padding so that should allow some force to dissipate. Like putting a marshmallow between the newton balls haha

Why is the long guard against the rules? Or do you mean just holding it out constantly?
