Local San Francisco television talk show had Boy George as their guest for the entire broadcast while George was touring his "Martyr Mantras" album in 1991. This is MOST of the broadcast, unfortunately missing a couple minutes from the beginning, but still a great interview and a fun "questions from the audience" section at the end.

What people never realized that George was a very intelligent man and has ethics. He can hold a terrific conversation; that's why Johnny Carlson really liked him, and liked having George on his show.

Boy George was beautiful looking. He cheered up the down trodden broke and poor 1980s. We had no money and colourful George brightened up our gray days. I really mean that. I was a kid in the 80s and it wasn't easy for most people.
@yoya4766
@yoya4766 Год назад
You put that really well. It describes his effect on me. The first time I saw the Karma Chameleon video. His colourful clothes and the song itself were a ray of sunshine. He was shy, unique and very talented. Which is the opposite of bands like Duran Duran and others, who were in your face. Whereas BG almost seemed to turn away from the camera and seemed self conscious. Which is actually more appealing.

It must have helped that he found a sense of creative belonging again doing house music and doing the whole “Jesus Loves You” pseudonym and having a dance record label. George had said he felt really creatively lost during the “High Hat” sessions in 1988.

There is so much going on in this interview that I am still trying to digest it all. First of all, thank you again Mr. David for posting another revelatory piece of Boy George’s history. “People that last have more than just their wardrobe…” Well said, George, well said. Who would have thought that a local TV show would be fertile ground for quite possibly the best Boy George interview I have ever seen. Whoever the producer was for this show either had an obvious love for George, his message, and his overwhelming talent, or they just hit the right combination of luck and stardust all at the same time. “Culture Club is done..” “I don’t want to live on my past successes.” The fact that he had it written into his concert contracts that he wouldn’t do any Culture Club songs is remarkable. Still, he had a soft spot in his heart for that time period as he would still do a couple of their songs live in his shows. It’s clear that George was at a crossroads at this point in his career, wanting to move forward and grow as an artist, to be taken as more than just a pretty boy in makeup and flashy wardrobe. Slamming his American record label Virgin perhaps was not the smartest thing to do, but by this point, we really didn’t have an awareness of George in America. “Virgin Records don’t understand me..” Reminds me a lot of the struggles Prince was having with his record label. Certainly, the gigantic success days of Culture Club were behind him. Still, he would pop up over and over, stubbornly refusing to be discarded upon a heaping pile of irrelevant 80s acts. In so many ways, he had more in common with an artist like Prince then he ever did with other MTV acts of the era. “You can’t separate style and content..” and his discussion of Jimi Hendrix, it’s clear that George gets it. George is a musical genius, through and through. I was listening to Bow Down Mister yesterday; that song still moves me all these years later. I still remember waiting patiently at Sam Goody’s for the clerk to open the shipping box containing The Martyr Mantras. Perhaps at the time, I was a bit too young to get that record, but all these years on now, I realize just how deep that record truly was. What a statement it was for a major star to pivot and put his life philosophy out there as part of his art. Mr. David, I feel so greedy. I just want more and more. May your collection of things to digitize and upload never run dry! You are doing more for George’s ongoing legacy than anyone I can think of. What’s your story about how you came to admire George so much? I would love to know. I was fascinated with George discussing signing Eve Gallagher and signing her at the age of 37 to his label. It’s a shame she didn’t hit quite as big over here in America as she should have for the long haul. Her smoky bluesy sound is reminiscent of Lisa Stansfield. I need to find out more about her career progression over the years. She only has a tiny presence on my chosen music streaming platform, Apple Music. I absolutely loved George’s reverence for Princess Diana and the role she was playing in de-stigmatizing AIDS and her tireless work for AIDS-related charities. “She’s pretty down… really good at her job.” Yes, George. All the YES! There is so much good stuff going on in this interview. Isn’t it beautiful that the caller who asked about George duetting with Alison Moyet would result in a discussion of George’s desire to duet with Gladys Knight. How great that TWENTY-EIGHT years later, we would get a beautiful collaboration between the two on the song Runaway Train. The revelation that George was writing a book.. four years later I was devouring that same book, Take It Like a Man, as well as it’s follow-up, Straight. The fact that a local show got such an exclusive clip of Generations of Love, a song that had yet to be released in America, was also quite remarkable. The lyrics to that song.. “There’s too many people fighting, tied to the wheel…no big AIDS sensation, no twenty-eight clause, the end of apartheid, no message of war…” We need George’s message today, in 2022, more than ever. What an enormous musical statement, transcending the intervening decades! I never expected to be writing such a massive treatise on George on a Friday morning, but this interview has stimulated my brain in such amazing ways. Bravo, Mr. David!

Remember seeing this as a teen on local TV (Bay Area) and then seeing him at the Edge in Palo Alto, California! He toured as Boy George since Jesus Loves You was "controversial." Bought an awesome "Absolutely Queer" t-shirt and wore it the next day to be ridiculed in High School by teachers and classmates alike. Still love this era of the Boy.

George was born in ‘61. I was born ten years later. Point is we remember the 70’s, came up through the ‘80’s and ‘90’s. Again, George was always a modern, forward thinking, bright bulb. Comparing this with the ‘84 Donahue appearance, seven years had passed, but people still seem naive and dense. Polyester/hair helmet conservative style was still the norm for talk show hosts. Newscasters were ALWAYS like polyester clad librarians. It kinda shocks me, because I’ve always sort of ignored/overlooked banal “normalcy”. Times have changed, because even in conservative formats people in general are comparatively “sexy” looking now (and obviously more diverse). Cringe at 14:20: “But the sound was..BLACK!” SMH. God, I lived through crazy eras, pre internet haha, , and watching this (specifically these hosts, good god) reminds me of the types of things I’ve never had patience for. 18:20, oh yeah, the first Fergie, Sarah Ferguson, before Black Eyed Peas’ Fergie. Also loved what George said about Elizabeth Taylor.

I love boy George always have but I think what he said about Madonna was wrong. Every family is different and she may have a reason for feeling about her family the way she does.
@lessismore8533
@lessismore8533 2 года назад
@@francinezane4076 I see your point but George was so right about famous ppl not being immune to show respect just like everyone else. Celebrities are not above that requirement. Now don’t get me wrong if I were a celeb I would LOVE to blast my former annoying sibling on TV. I sure hated growing up with a younger entitled sib who got away with everything. But I’d have to do it cleverly as to not make myself look foolish. I never saw that Madonna thing but I’m presuming Madonna executed her feelings in a way George saw as immature. I’ll have to watch that program for myself. P.s. still thumbed up your comment
@francinezane4076
@francinezane4076 2 года назад
@@lessismore8533 I appreciate the thumbs up however trust me I don't need a lesson about respect. And yes celebrity's are not immune to the rules that we should all live by. However I was raised to not say anything at all if I had nothing good to say about someone. Regardless of how I may feel personally now if he did see it as immature I believe his comment about Madonna was equally as immature. Aloha from Hawaii
@lessismore8533
@lessismore8533 Год назад
@@francinezane4076umm I wasn’t giving you a lesson about respect. I think you took my comment as an attack at you and it wasn’t. If you were raised on “if you don’t have anything nice to say then don’t say it at all”, then know you & George agree on the same thing. According to this interview, he’d rather Madonna have left family comments out if it was going to be negative. There was nothing immature about him calling Madonna out on her actions. Besides you can’t fairly judge Madonna (or George) on this situation if you never watched Madonnas documentary yourself and saw the comments she made , and then judge for yourself. Plus your very first comment said “she may have a reason for feeling the way she did.” Just as an FYI, ANYONE can use the same argument you did. So that whole “if you don’t have anything nice to say…” thing, ppl will just combat with “I said it for a reason” thing.

It was ultimately valid considering Madonna lifted quite a few of her sounds and melodies from the Erotica album from The Martyr Mantras.
