Boyle Heights is a 6 and half square mile neighborhood just east of the L.A. river that has a very rich and diverse history. However, I wanted to focus on just one aspect of that history-food.
I spent a day visiting the a few places with good food and history.
On this trip we visit Al & Bea’s, a local spot that’s been serving some of the best bean and cheese burritos since 1966.
We also visit the streets where 2 food brands got their start-The XLNT Tamale Company, which is the oldest continuously operating Mexican food brand in the country and Walker Foods, which has been making the Mexican-American pantry staple, El Pato salsa.
And we finish by paying a visit to one of the last two Pioneer Chicken restaurants still standing.
This is Foo Howser’s ™ Boyle Heights Food History Tour.
