As the daughter, wife and mother of beef producers, I thank you for supporting and advocating others to support local farmers. Beef raised from local farms is FAR SUPERIOR to anything you can buy in our local grocery store and will always be more economical per pound. Home grown beef has been in my life my whole life and for a few years lately we had to do without it. We have a freezer full now and I have never been so happy or so grateful for this beautiful, American raised food!

The pinch point for us is not having access to beef raisers who would sell to the public, and lack of process facilities. If you have a hookup with a processing facility, and live withing an hour of any dense population, I think youd make bank.

Having raised beef in the past for our families. I can tell you that home raise beef from a pasture with good grass &/or quality hay makes a difference in animal and the taste. I have had those who never consumed home raised beef say they can smell the difference in the meat. Which I am not surprised. It is going to cost you for good quality meat, please remember you are not only feeding your family but supporting a family business. One that would not survive without your needing their product. It takes them a minimum of '18 months' to see that animal is raised to a healthy product for your household. It is not easy, let me tell you. As the calves can be born breach and you have to pull them. The mother rejects the calf, and you either bottle feed it or get another cow to take the calf. Remember when you are buying your [home grown] beef and you balk at the price. Think of the family and all their hard work that they put into seeing a product worthy of their name for your dinner table.
@AcornHillHomestead
@AcornHillHomestead 5 месяцев назад
You are correct. The family farmers provide a far better product. The meat is beautiful and so flavorful we feel satisfied more than eating local food store stuff. And its healthier. Canned ground beef is wonderful. Im going to the local farm store for some more to can this week. At $5.25/lb for nice lean ground beef and 10% off on senior days, its a baragin compared to the local food store. Farmer soup is delish too!

We live close enough to the ranch where they raise the beef we buy at the local butcher shop. All their beef and pork is listed where/which ranch they come from! We drove out to where they are raised and see them every couple of months and say Hi 🙋‍♀️ to next year's food!!! I know it sounds weird but we love seeing them grazing in the fields knowing they are humanely raised and exactly what they feed on!!! They even lost everything else they eat that isn't grazed!!! They finish a lot of beef here with hazelnuts! I don't balk at all at the price it's absolutely worth every penny I pay!!! For the ground beef it's the same price as the grocery store but such better meat and they're raised/kept better more humanely too!!! Win-win in my book!!!

My best friends are ranchers and are hanging in by a thread. Some of us go out and help when it is time to work cows because they need our help. We do it out of friendship and we realize one day their ranch could go away. Last year was a bad year for lupine calf decormaties. The meat is perfectly fine to eat but they can’t go to market because they would fall and die in the shipping truck. So several of us went out to help butcher and process the cows. It is the first question we ask during calving season, “how many lupine calves”? Now we are in moderate drought already and the irrigation master said it will be a bad year for irrigating. As you said in your video, you know what that means. I am so afraid our small family ranchers could very well be a thing of the past. So please everyone, buy local and support our ranchers.

I just got a call from my step brother who raises beef for our family and told me he got a call from the farmer he gets his calves from and said the price per lbs would be going up from $3.19 to $3.90 and asked me if I still wanted a half this year and I told him my money was losing value and would rather have beef in my freezer than money in the bank. Can't eat money but beef is the real value here. We live in Washington State and have many choices for farm raised meat, so I feel pretty lucky to have a good source of protein

Last month, I went into Costco with $500 to spend on beef. The prices were so high, I came out with chicken, pork, and ground turkey instead. If you can't afford the beef, pick up some brown gravy mixes, and PRETEND you're eating beef. Even Walmart 93/7% hamburger was around $6.50 a lb. last month. Extra lean was $7. This is nutzoid Cali, so we're probably higher. And, yes, you are correct when you say, "Control the food, control the ppl." Every month, ppl gawk at my grocery basket and give me dirty looks. A little over a year and a half ago I started watching a few Prepper channels which led me to canning videos and I started canning. The very first thing was chicken legs. Then I tried soup. We eat low carb so I stayed away from foods we don't eat. I started buying meat & beef that was marked down and canning it like crazy. I know we are supposed to use & rotate our stock - but at this point I am just now getting to the inventory I want for our pantry. I knew prices were going to go up, but I still get shocked every time I shop. I'm now paying the amount for marked down meat that I paid full price a few years ago. If i had more jars and storage space i would double what i have on my shelves. After hubby had a stroke in 2020, we lost everything and we've struggled to get back to a better place. I now feel better about an emergency. I also started volunteering at two food pantries, and I've been sent home with extra canned and dry food that has helped a lot. Thanks for all you do Leisa! Many Blessings from Deborah in West Virginia!

I grab marked-down or overstocks ALL THE TIME at Kroger and do better than anywhere else I can. I got an extra freezer, a very small one, just to hold what I have found. I am otherwise priced out, and fear that I will not be able to get any at all soon. Turkey breasts and hams were low last month, and I grabbed those too, but beef gets picked up when I see it at a reasonable price. I learned to pressure can a few years back just to put meat away.If I can learn at 67, anyone can.

I quit buying from Walmart years ago because of the way they treat their truck drivers. I buy from my local store all the time because during the crazy time they took care of their customers even buying bulk beans and repackaging in affordable quantities for their customer base. They always have meat on sale at buy 5 for $25 and for the first 10 days of the month they have it bumped to buy 6 for $25. I love that I can see the butcher and talk to him. Leisa, we just purchased one 1/4 of a cow from a local farmer last month. Between the cost of the cow and the butcher processing and wrapping the meat, we spent $800. That order included 30 each 2lb of hamburger. Of course there are all kinds of steaks, roasts, stew beef etc. We literally now have enough beef for the two of us to last to the end of the year. I don't have to think of purchasing any beef at Publix and it is a great feeling! The quality of this meat is amazing! It even smells better believe it or not. We are now saving for our next cow. You said it right. Buy direct from rancher if possible. I’m from Texas. I can tell you one reason for what is happening. I am sure it is not the only reason. There was a wild fire that burned up ranch land over a big chunk of the TX panhandle. Some cattle was lost. The rest are being sold off because fire burned off all the grassland that feed the cattle. It’s going to take a couple or more for that land to grow grasses back enough for grazing big herds. These ranchers lost herds, land, and in some cases homes. In my opinion, anytime a disaster occurs anywhere in the USA in relation to food chain, prices go up.
@kaythegardener
@kaythegardener 4 месяца назад
You are correct about natural disasters hitting the cattle herds hard. For 2 years in a row, there was widespread flooding in the upper & lower Mississippi River drainages for months at a time. This delayed the planting of soy & corn feed crops as well as thousands of cattle drowned!! People forget that it takes about 3 years to rebuild the cattle herds. But it only takes about 1 year for pigs or chickens! Another factor is all that beef processed foods in freezers & cans (eg hamburger patty breakfast rolls, prepared meatballs, etc). This is why the cost of roasts & other cuts are hard to find in the retail stores!!

Our local grocery stores have been having ground chuck (80/20) on sale for $3.49 -3.99/lb lately. I have been buying and canning it. Occasionally, I will make some burgers 🍔 for the freezer, but after losing a freezer FULL of food once, I don't trust it for long term storage. And yes, the texture of ground beef right out of the jar is an acquired taste. But making it into chili, spaghetti sauce (for spaghetti, lasagna, stuffed shells and many other dishes) makes it 100% better, in my opinion. And, as they say, if you're hungry enough you will eat it. Thanks for the heads-up on beef price updates. Even though I *think I have enough, I think I will be canning meatballs this weekend.

We are still in a drought here. Many had to sell part of their cattle the past two years. And with little grass, water shortages, etc many can’t buy back what they’ve sold, thus smaller herds. Plus the price of cattle is crazy high so most couldn’t afford to buy back if we did get rain. Some will keep their heifer calves to replenish their herds but they have to grow before they can breed so there won’t be as many steers to sell at auction this coming fall….if you calve in the spring. Our tax accountant says there are quite a few who will sell what’s left of their cattle herd & quit. It’s a vicious cycle right now with the cost of replacement cattle, feed, fuel, etc etc. It’s really sad to see.

Our locally produced beef has not gone up in price when you buy a 1/4 or 1/2. They charge and are currently charging $3.00 lb hanging weight. The processor charges 71 cents a lb. We started buying from them when we learned they were 100% non GMO. In the last few years they said they could no longer be completely non GMO, but they grow their own feed as well. It is amazing beef, and the double-wrapped vacuum sealed packaging keeps the beef fresh in the deep freeze for years. support your local farmer. we need to keep them in business!

Then we take the leftovers and make a different meal of tacos or salad topped with the braised meat! So delicious!!! I will not throw food away ever anymore!!! We repurpose everything!!! We just got a whole beef from the people who rent out pasture land. We took half and our granddaughter took the other half. Guess we did that at the right time. We also buy a ground beef/pork mix which is better than plain ground beef - better flavor and more fat and costs less than the store ground beef. It's the middle man that is making the $$. We raised Alpine goats years ago and butchered our whethers. I look forward to t=your videos on preserving beef roasts.

My twin sister and I just 3 weeks ago did the same thing with HB from the freezer.😃 Ended up with 5-pints of seasoned taco meat(only had two taco seasoning mixes or there would have been more) the rest went into jars as spaghetti sauce with meat(12 pints and 2-quarts worth). I MUCH prefer tacos over spaghetti any day of the week! So guess what's next for the HB(bought at reduced prices) that I've been scooping up and bringing home> TACO MEAT!!😁

All excellent points. We have noticed the same issues in our area SE Tn. We are a small farm and have around 20 head. We use a local Amish butcher for our cows to minimize cost. The meat doesn’t hang a long time and is retuned cold but not frozen. That amounts to around 4.50 a pound . If you use a traditional processor it will probably be closer to 6 a pound. That’s still cheap, 6$ for steak?!6$ for roast per pound!? Reach out to your local farmer and do the math.

We’ve already been priced out of beef we might get it twice a year. But we replaced it with chicken and turkey and pork. The turkey we get at $.39 a pound at Thanksgiving last year we got 14 of them and we’ve canned 10 of them at the same time they had pork butt on sale for $.98 a pound. I got 80 pounds of that and I’m already canned most of that and then I’ve got a few roast here and there for just a big meal and I do a lot of chicken leg and thigh quarters cause I can get that for $.89 a pound so I canned quite a bit of that too. But I also use the bones for stock and the turkey bones too. I’m a widower with two adult children still at home so money is really really tight. But things to you, And teaching us how to can WE CAN weather this pretty well.

A big part of my prepping, was simply shifting my diet away from animal products. If you can, centering your diet around whole starches (grains, beans, lentils, tubers, quinoa) will automatically protect you from inflation. That, and getting away from the prepackaged ready to eat stuff.

In my area the stores will attempt to sell at those high prices and it just sits there. Eventually they have to get rid of it so they will mark it down for two weeks on "sale" because they have too much. I still see grass fed for around $5 a pound which is about the same or cheaper than it used to be.

The price of beef in Canada has been high for awhile so if it rings true that what happens in the USA with food eventually spreads next door to Canada, then I'll expect beef to go even higher. I'm lucky if I can find lean hamburger on sale for under $4 a pound and it's usually $5-7 a pound regular price in our grocery stores in Nova Scotia. But nothing is going down in price here to any major extent. Nova Scotia lobster even hit a record breaking price of $21 or $22 a pound and even at those prices, the fishermen say they're not making enough to cover their fuel and other costs. It's a crazy time we're living in for food and many other things.

I am actively looking for a local meat market in my southern Colorado area. Being new to the area has been a challenge. I have located one to check out and will be curious to see their pricing. I recently purchased 93/7 ground meet from Walmart which was more than $6.50 a lb. which I was not used to paying. So when I travel back to TX every 3-4 mos I stock up on some good ground chuck for $5.49 a lb. These increased prices are so discouraging and out of reach for some folks. As a general rule of thumb, for a sale price, I would never pay more than $2.99 lb for a roast; $.99 lb for chicken or pork. But I am now seeing roast at least $3.99 lb & up; chicken at $1.99 to $2.99 and pork at $1.19 lb and up. and those are TX prices which I jump on a good deal when I travel back. CO prices are more than a $1.00 per lb on any of it. I’ve been here for better than 6 mos and yet to find what I consider a good sale.
