As far as I know, the NHL never rescinded the push-in-the-back penalty, but I haven’t seen an NHL ref call it in nearly 20 years. That right there was a textbook example of it, but they call it a cross-check, which it wasn’t.
I was gonna say, that has to be a penalty, it does the same job as a cross check, a slash, or a hook, so it must be something. It can't be interference, because he has the puck, but there must be something....
@@tonyjofenig6833 I distinctly remember a couple times where defenders received the push in the back penalty when trying to disrupt a breakaway and they ended up shoving the puck handler headfirst into the net, but those were in the 90s.
@@xRawPower Yes, it's a penalty, he has no chance of playing the puck, or catching the player, so he shoves the player to the ice from behind. Doesn't matter what part of his body he uses, he's preventing the player, who is breaking away from him from doing so.
Just like when Scorsese won the Oscar for The Departed after not winning for Raging Bull, Taxi Driver or Goodfellas, Marchand finally gets penalized for all that slewfooting he never has properly answered for.

Rank is consistently one of the worst refs. It’s crazy, there’s like 5 or 6 decent refs left in the league & you just gotta pray they’re assigned your game
I love professional Officiating seems like in their rule book it states "as an official if we make an incorrect call, we must double down and then call a second when the players tells us how stupid we are after the replay shows us getting it wrong"
Not a cross check, but certainly a nasty little move going after someone's back like that. 2 Minutes for being Brad Marchand would have been the correct call.
Not a fan of Marchand but there's no way that's a cross check. NHL refs are so inept, every game i watch at least two or three bad or missed calls no matter which teams I watch. The skill level of the players is better than ever and the officiating is horrendous. Even the linesmen are bad with the continuous false puck drops on faceoffs leading to guys being thrown out of the faceoff.

For it to be a crosscheck you need to hit someone with the shaft of your stick held between your two hands. This clearly was not the case. Again how can it be elbowing if he didn't hit him with his elbow. He hit him with a forearm, and that's not illegal. And for it to be checking from behind, the player had to be unaware of the pending hit and not turning away from the hit. And neither of that is the case here. The guy turned right in front of Marchand.
And an extra penalty for arguing with the ref? Guys used to be red in the face yelling and swearing and no extra penalty, god this league is getting soft

Wow. The NHL needs to invest in refs. This was a terrible call...and, when The Rat points that out...the refs double-down. I believe that Buffalo got called for a "tripping" penalty...that wasn't tripping. Terrible game for the refs. (FTR, I don't want their job)

and actually yeah I would use brad marchand as a role model for my kid. the guy has made it to the nhl, and won a stanley cup, and gold medals on the international stage multiple times. So honestly I would and will actually say hey look at Brad Marchand, he busted his ass and put the work in and won and is successful proving that , despite not the biggest , wasn't the most skilled , wasn't always the cleanest player but showed improvement throughout his career. The refs messes up a call and is allowed to be criticized for it. Marchand getting an unsportsmanlike is like an Umpire makeing a bad call and throwing the player out for complaining.
@@christopherworks400 Let me rephrase. It was not the penalty of "checking from behind". Checking from behind has 3 elements. 1) Contact is made with the opponents back. Yes. 2) the opponent is not aware of the impending hit and unable to defend himself. No. The player turned right in front of Marchand. 3) Opponent cannot intentionally turn his body to create the contact with his back. No. That's pretty much exactly what happened. The player turned away from Marchand.
Refs are so sick of Marchand’s stupid antics from diving, suspensions, ignorant interviews, antagonistic behaviour, licking another player, unable to control himself, etc. Just stupid.
Clearly wasn’t a penalty. Marchand pleads his case, and because of his status and history the ref makes it personal and tacks on the extra 2. Embarrassing officiating

I do NOT like Marchand, AT ALL, but he's right. And the officiating this season in the NHL has been a total failure. They all should be absolutely embarrassed by their own ineptitude.
I am surprised that Marchand did not fire a shot at that ref after that call. That unsportsmanlike conduct penalty is nothing more than a butt hurt ref being called out for a bad penalty.

This is the worst year I have seen for the refs blowing calls, not only on the ice but in Toronto too at their review center. The one that still has me shaking my head was a November Rangers - Blue Jackets game where they are fighting over the puck in front of the goal before it finally goes in. You could clearly see it inches inside. Toronto reviews it and we get the call on the ice that it's a no goal. It appears they ruled that the referee had "intended" to blow the whistle prior to it going it but the review showed he didn't blow it until seconds after it crossed the line.
Perhaps but the ref on the other end of the ice that put his arm up that couldn’t even see the back of the player being “cross checked” thought otherwise
From behind. This is not okay. Could be Rule 607 | Charging or so. Marchand always used to be insidious and sometimes needs psychiatric check and special pills. He does not look well in his head.
NHL refereeing is completely inconsistent, if not decided on ahead of time, but that doesn't mean that Marchand isn't unsportsmanlike. They should give him one of those per game, just for good measure.
Marchand is the most embarrassing player in the NHL unless you’re a Boston fan. More suspensions than any player in the league. All the stupid things he’s done.

When you establish yourself as a dirty player, refs are going to be quick to call. They likely weren't looking right at him and the motion of both players was consistent with a cross check. Guess what though..you're also not allowed to throw elbows ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

its not elbowing because he didn't hit him with an elbow. It was a forearm, which is not a penalty. and its not crosschecking because he didn't hit him with the shaft of his stick between his two hands.
