Brad Renfro Last Interview October 2007

I shot and edited this back in October 2007. I felt obligated to post this after the Academy Awards so blatantly dismissed his acting contributions in their memorial montage. Brad's comments at the end are sadly prophetic. He will be missed.

He looks so sad, so despondent. I think that coupled with the fact that his mother was a drug addict, he was predisposed to addiction, and was not properly supervised when he was a minor. This made him vulnerable to predators. It makes so much sense now, with revelations about pedophilia in Hollywood, why so many child actors end up on destructive paths and why some of them die young. It's been going on since the industry began. I can't watch Brad Renfro in "Sleepers" (1996) without feeling disturbed and haunted. This poor boy was lost, and didn't think he could turn to anyone. Bless his soul. RIP.

Yep, the director of that film (whose name I won't mention, but I'm sure you know who I'm talking about) has many connections to other pedophiles in the industry; he introduced former child actor Brock Pierce (co-founder of the now defunct internet company DEN that was used to lure in boy actors) to Marc Collins-Rector, the creater and founder, who was later convicted of sexually abusing boy actors. This director also did the "X-Men" DVD commentary with Brian Peck, who is also a registered sex offender. Like I said, way too many connections. Poor Brad.

I had the pleasure of meeting and knowing Brad when he recorded his record with his band at my dad’s home studio near Los Angeles. I was a freshman in high school and he had just finished filming the movie Bully. He called me “Diva” lol that was the nickname he gave me. My dad said one time he showed up to the studio high and told Brad to go home and that he couldn’t come back unless he was sober. He never came back high again. I think he craved the love and attention from others because he was so neglected as a child. He respected my dad a lot for putting his foot down. He was a really nice guy and unbelievably talented. I think about him a lot and wish he was still here. Rest In Peace Brad

Oh man its taken me ten years to finally watch this last interview of Brad Renfro. I thought i was gonna tear up but its nowhere near as sad as i expected it to be. I see he was looking Elvis-y (later years..). Brad seemed somewhat content then however I’m not totally convinced either that he was 100% sober or happy/comfortable with his changing lifestyle. I wish i could have helped him. I adored him when i was growing up. He was one of my first crushes in life, he was enormously talented and so beautiful and gorgeous and charismatic. But as his issues with drugs became ongoing, I rememeber having an inkling that he wouldn’t make it to 30. I remember how devastated i was when i found out he’d died. In a way, Heath Ledger’s passing provided an escape. I know i didn’t know Brad as a person, but that doesn’t mean i couldn’t feel for him. I have no idea what its like to be an addict but i’ve seen far too much of its effects. Brad seemed like a good person, a decent person who got trapped with his demons. I found his father Mark Renfro’s facebook. Theres no indication that Mark never cared for his eldest son. He may not have been the hands on dad that he should have been for Brad but from what i can tell in pictures that hes posted and some commentary, he knows where he/they went wrong. He doesn’t say it outright yet there is sadness in his eyes. Brad’s son is beautiful and seems a very happy young man. I still can’t believe both of my childhood crushes are dead (i know how to pick them in real life too 😒). I’ve been thinking maybe we each have an allotted number of years to draw out on earth, and just like people who live to 100, maybe 25 years was a far as he was meant to go. For whatever reason, I hope that Brad’s soul is at rest or that hes moved on to the next life and is happy and contented where he now resides 😇🙏

When someone leaves a mean-spirited comment, then laces it with fake kindness and smiling emojis so they can still do a little fame-name-dropping, and go to bed feeling “virtually” accomplished. Seriously? It’s been another four years since you left this, so you’re most likely too far gone now to comprehend what I’m about to say, but I’ll say it anyway. I’m in a mood. What happened in the life of this beautiful, struggling human being is incredibly sad. What’s happened to you, however? Is pathetic. In the 10 years it allegedly took you to watch this, you clearly managed to squander the things that kept you human. Not to mention whatever compassion you might’ve had the capacity for at some point. Even “Elvis-y” as you described him, and edging towards his last few moments on this sh¡t planet full of sh¡t people, he still didn’t stray from who he was. He was still there. Genuine. Real. That you could watch him break down, feel nothing (because he didn’t LOOK the same?) then come down here and leave this phony dribble is a testament to who you’ve become, not to where he ended up. You let yourself become someone who looks AT rather than INTO. A vapid, image-obsessed noob in a sea of like-minded simpletons and Kardashian clones. You allowed yourself to fall for the lie, and morph into an inauthentic, half-ass version of Self. He was an addict. Addiction is hell. An insidious affliction that is both a mental health disorder, and a physical medical condition. Yes. It is. Physiologically, it presents as an anomaly in the midbrain. It’s a double whammy. A NIGHTMARE. One that most people never wake up from, let alone overcome. That’s what happened to him. What happened to YOU?

I don't think it's a coincidence that many of the films in which Brad Renfro appeared had him playing tortured roles - boys and young men who were victimized or hurt in some way. Art imitating life? In his last feature film, "The Informers" (2008), I don't think he was acting. The director even stated on the DVD commentary that Renfro put a lot of himself into the character and even stated that "Brad had a lot of awful things happen to him" without elaborating. I think it was an open secret that he was a victim of Hollywood pedophiles.

Brad was good in Apt Pupil and BULLY- which was an unpleasant film, in my opinion- but in this interview he looks out of shape, he looks prone, he looks washed up and pudgy. Surely another victim of the child star syndrome? Look at Bobby Driscoll! Brad was in the teeny magazines in 1999, in 2008 he was in a coffin.

Me, my friend, and right next to us was Brad Renfro. I recognized him but it took me a few seconds to remember who he was. He just started talking to us.... talking about football because we were watching sports news on the TV. I just remember feeling really sorry for him during our conversation because I could tell he was struggling with things... like he didn't have any real friends and just some other things he said during our conversation. He asked us if he could hang with us that night. He said it was nice to meet and hang out with normal people. When he said that is when I really felt bad for him. Especially for it being his FIRST movie. Unreal. Kids with tons of experience couldn't have done it as good. I really liked that movie since he and I were 1 year apart, I was born in 81' so when that movie came out I liked it because a kid my age was the main character. Great movie, haven't watched it in years, I need to watch it again now as an adult...

Watching this makes me sad!! He was a great actor...and his life ended far too short!!! Omg....I had his posters all over my room when i was younger...any magazine that had ANYTHING to do with Brad Renfro..I would buy it or get my mom to buy it for me...lol... any one who was 12 years old and over in the 90's will remember when we actually had magazine's made for us...our older siblings had Cosmo, and other older teenage magazines...But we as the younger ones had 4teen...and 16teen magazine!!! I had stacks of those magazines...and anything Brad Renfro..oh oh oh...and remember JTT(they used to call him) and 90210 gossip...lol...anyone else remember those days?! Lol

He had just three months to live. So sad what drugs have done to people of all age groups over the years. From what I understand, Brad was a very smart guy who was interested in all aspects of film making . Perhaps had he lived he might have gone on to be a director or producer. Maybe be the next Ron Howard (??) Brad had just completed a film or was about to. He should have went back home to Tennessee for a while and chilled out as he was not a Hollywood type.

It’s haunting and sad, so much talent and addiction took him out like it does so many. The stigma needs to change it’s a disease and yes I’m aware you need to want help if you’re lucky enough to have people in your life that love you and are willing to help you. It’s not one’s fault that they’re born an addict but it is their responsibility to endure and overcome the damage it can and will cause. RIP

Its tragic and heart breaking he had issues with drug addiction he was genetically and environmentally predisposed to drug addiction and im sure he had deep rooted issues that sure didn't help . Not everyone is blessed to make it out alive and are alive to tell the tale . He was obviously probably on methadone anti heroin craving therapy to curb his cravings so thats why he gained weight. And probably mood stabilizers anxiety meds as well etc. He was so handsome and talented in his prime but this is life shit happens. Reminds me of a bit of River Phonenix tragic tale

I had such a soft spot for Brad Renfro. I followed his entire career. Honestly, if he had been sitting at a table upright and wearing a decent shirt, this interview would have come across so differently. Whomever shot this should have known better, because it takes away from his wise words and his depth. But, those eyes still have the faint sparkle and intensity that he was defined by. RIP to a generational talent

I first saw him in The Client. I thought he had so much potential. I was hoping he'd do really well. The industry is scary, vile, and unforgiving. The ones that make also have their struggles. I suspect only a small percentage could be categorized as "normal" and free of getting caught up in cesspool, I'll never forget something Brad Renfro said in an interview when he spoke about his addiction: "If you've never tried drugs, don't. And if you have, pray." He seemed like a really likable person. It's unfortunate he wasn't able to beat it.

Had he lived, I think Brad would have given DiCaprio a run for his money. IMO, he was a better actor and he had looks and the camera loved him, he had that something special that Leo also has which is why Leo is the top actor of this age group, but imo, Renfro was better.
@EdieSexwitch
@EdieSexwitch 8 лет назад
+James Boyles But Leo can't play guitar and write music, Look up Hey Mama Darling by Renfro and have a listen, I don't see Leo doing anything like that. And I still stand by my opinion that Brad was more talented overall than Leo. Leo is very shallow, sorry but it's true. He's a good actor tho, finally got his Oscar, while the Oscars didn't even include Brad in the RIP section of their show the year he died. So yeah there's that too.

If you look up heroine addict in the encyclopedia you'll see your addition to the definition. Great science bro!
@IndicaDreaming
@IndicaDreaming 7 лет назад
+Glass Steagall You asked a question then ridiculed someone for giving you an answer that makes sense. Maybe if we look up the definition of heroin addict in the future we will see your picture because deep insecurity can easily lead to addiction and you clearly have deep insecurity to attack someone for trying to answer your question. Anyone who has had an addiction knows that it can be an extremely confusing place in your mind, so confusing that wanting to laugh and cry at the same time is very possible. If you are looking for pure science then go look for a facial expression expert, otherwise stop asking questions and being a dick when you get an answer

Uh it's really not strange at all if you know anything about his struggles with heroin. This was obviously filmed not long before he fatally overdosed, so it makes perfect sense that he would be feeling very mixed up inside, considering what he was going through.
