BRAINIAC - Wild, Inventive Synth Punk That Needs To Be Remembered

I'll just let the almighty John Peel describe these guys:
"From down in the basements of Dayton, Ohio, come Brainiac - 4 young men ready to take on the world, armed with tunes, a sense of style and looks to die for.
Brainiac's live show explodes with ferocious, high-intensity, jerky guitar shudders and pounding psycho pop. Songs are played at sound-shattering levels and when you see them lurch, grind and all but spontaneously combust on stage, you'll know that Brainiac are here to bring life to the classic misunderstood punk youth aesthetic.
We wanna hear them."
Granted, he was reading out a press release that the band may have written themselves, but let's not let that get in the way of things.
A documentary on the band premiered at the prestigious SXSW festival this year, but Brainiac are still a very long way from recouping the acclaim they deserved but missed out on due to the sudden death of their frontman.
I hope this video can make up for a little bit of that as well.

I heard hissing prigs first and it blew me away. I'm really happy there's an interest being resparked in the band. I'm from Toledo where Schmersal was born. My old band opened for his next band Enon 2 or 3 times. Just as awesome. I thought Brainiac was huge. I saw the documentary too it was great.

I got to see them for the 1st time on Sunday supporting Mogwai. OMG!! This band is special. Absolutley insane and so so good live. They can do everything they put on a record live too. Very relented band. They should be Huge! Bit I'm kinda glad they underground still. True Punk rock for sure. They are amazing!!😁

I saw them so many times in Dayton Ohio. I was fortunate enough to work with Tim at Trader Vics. We spent most of 1994 working together there every Sunday. I finally decided after seeing them so many times locally that I wanted to see them outside of town. So I went to see them play a show in Chicago at a small club. They opened up for Sunny Day Real-estate and Shudder To Think. They blew them both off the stage. It is still to this day one of the greatest shows that I have ever seen in my life. Brainiac was incredible at home in Dayton, and yet they were even better on the road.

Hey wait I said this before you dissed on "Collide" which is one of their greatest songs. It's in the same vein as "Sometimes" by My Bloody Valentine or "Killing All the Flies" by Mogwai. There's a really sweet, gentle acoustic song under all that distortion, and if you really listen, you can barely hear the human through the noise. I still love you though

Great Review! I am a bit late I suppose but I find it cool to see a video on Brainiac other than the live recordings, song recordings, and sparse interview recordings. I have been getting back into the band recently with my friend and I just always forget how much I love them! I saw the documentary during the 1st Dayton showing on April 19th at the Neon and it really moved me as a younger teen. Since my dad was the drummer, I feel especially affected in an odd way, cause in the early years of my life I saw the long term effects that losing Tim and subsequently Brainiac had on him. Throughout literally my whole lifetime its been really nice to see him make a sort of recovery from the lifestyle he had unfortunately found himself in. The documentary puts more light on the lives of the members after and its on Amazon video if you haven't seen it yet. The more and more I listen to Brainiac and talk to my dad about it, the more I just really wish Tim was still alive so I could just talk to him at all really. Anyways my favorite has got to be Hissing Prigs, with Bonsai Superstar as a close second. Thanks for making a video on this legendary band!

Just gonna leave this here, even though this is from four years ago lol. I heard about Brainiac from Chalk (Cincinnati band that formed the year TT died, and heavily influenced by them), and now I'm on the mother ship lol. The world is quietly disappointing without bands like this in it. Thanks for this, and the heads-up about the doc.

It has likely been mentioned here already, but just in case it hasn't. There was a local man named "Johnny Metal" that had a local TV show on PBS, and a small local music shop on Brown Street in Dayton near UD. The man Johnny Metal's real name was Vincent. He would come into the record store that Timmy worked at, Trader Vic's Music Emporium, Johnny Metal would come in and go down to the basement of the shop and talk with the owner of Trader Vic's in the basement. So, "Vincent" was a local personality that many of us came to know in and around the "Down on Brown" area.

Seeing Trent, the drummer, now and at that time is like night & day. The guy really changed a lot between Taylor’s death & now, though I’m just happy that the guy was able to rebound from such a tragedy. From what I understand, it really affected him hard before he managed to build himself back up, but great review, nonetheless :).

Thanks for documenting this bands existence. I saw Guided by Voices and The Breeders in 1997 at Gilly's in Dayton, Oh. It was a benefit show for Tim Taylor's family. I had never heard of them before that show. Bob Pollard asked me if I had ever heard of Brainiac, and I said no. just recently listened to brainiac. Insane how much ATDI took from them. I saw Cedric is part of the documentary. He never kept it a secret his love for Brainiac, but I just was in awe of how much it sounded like ATDI but 10 years before. I also love how good Bonsai Superstar *sounds* in terms of the guitar tone and the mixing. It's one of the best recorded albums I've ever heard I think. Because it's chaotic but very clear and crisp and pleasant to listen to.
