The longest fuckin' work in human history goes to the "HxH created Eyepatch Wolf as a way of exposing Woolie to it". Almost fell over when he pulled it out
you know, he made true on that promise he made woolie that night, busted into his room in the middles of the night and instead of the gun ITS FUCKING HUNTER X HUNTER
shout-outs to John for actually having the wherewithal and internal discipline to hold back until the Patreon was going so that Woolie couldn't simply cancel the podcast mid-recording.
How the Podcast started: Two friends exchanging fun stuff they want each other to experience. How the Podcast is going: NAME YOUR TIME AND PLACE, I WILL FIGHT YOU
Me before the final recommendation: "There is an alternate timeline where this podcast has already devolved into a full-on war and episodes are just three hours of John and Woolie wishing for each other's death" Me at the end: "Nevermind, we're in that timeline, it starts next month"
200 iq move from eyepatch wolf. Hear a youtuber opinion about an anime you like, get pissed, make a whole career as a youtuber because you're filled with cosmic levels of spite that no man has seen since god banished adam and eve from the garden, become friends with said youtuber, get him to do a podcast, deal with his bullshit of putting the bad david cage game on you, load the gun, make him do jiu-jitsu so he get bopped, then finally, make him watch the anime he shitted on again. bravo 👏
It was like a handshake after a signing, and John still kept his grip and super-kicked Woolie. And started Steve Austin shouting “Hunter Hunter! Zoldyck Family, Heaven’s Arena!” Then while John is halfway up the ramp, Woolie makes eye contact and mouths: Eff you, John. John did some good long-term booking.
My main takeaway from the first 11 minutes is that John missing a fighting game tournament and the series of events that could have potentially gotten him killed that followed is still better than Omikron
in the alternate timeline, where John didn't survive that ride, Woolie is using Ouija board to ask if dying in a car accident was better than playing Omikron and they both agree it is
The ending of this episode is like watching a mega series like One Piece and it starting the arc that promises to pay off all the build up it has been doing for hundreds and hundreds of episodes. Everything led to this.
The moment Woolie said "Canadian-Japanese-Argentinian television series..." I jumped out of my chair because I knew that could only be Cybersix lmao it is very rare that we Argentinians get to share stuff with other cultures from far away like that so this weird-ass 90s show being a bridge of sorts does bring me joy.
Genuinley surprised it took this many episodes for john to rip the mask off and reveal it was a ploy to get woolie to love hunter x hunter this whole time.
2:53:07 This is part of why I love this pod. You can tell there’s a real love and passion for what they do. The excitement on John’s face was contagious!
It's so delightful to see John go from understanding and defensive to protect Woolie from the comments to unmitigated excitement once the story got to the right part.
eyepatchwolf getting PTSD from those fake martial artist videos he saw and was like, "I need to make sure my boy is going to a legit one and not one of those fake martial artists that scam you."
Oh, do you mean something similar to those self defense classes where they only train you for a very specific scenario that only works if the opponent is not moving?
@@johnrivers3813 Oh if you haven't seen his video on Fake martial arts, it's fuckin so good and it goes so deep, like government conspiracy deep, give it a watch.
Regarding the eclipse, the webcomic xkcd has a quote I think explains it pretty well (that I'm paraphrasing here): a partial eclipse looks like a really cool sunset. A total eclipse looks like the sky broke.
I started jiujistu a year and a half ago thanks to John. Thanks again John. My version of a parasocial relationship is wanting to try and not get thrown by your collar drag.
John: Gosh I'm awfully concerned about this fella chugging a whole bottle of Jack Daniels and juggling chainsaws in front of me but I don't want to be *rude* and say anything...
I honestly think "Attending a Fighting Game Tournament" should still be some kind of honorable mention on the list, John redeemed himself the next month and is willing to atone his punishment.
The totality of the Eclipse had me genuinely speechless tight chested in awe, it was crazy. You can totally understand how ancient peoples went fucking NUTS when it happened. 4pm on a day in the mid-70s getting as dark as midnight and you can feel the temperature drop around you, it was crazy as it crept across the sun too because it didn't just get darker out, it was like looking at everything through a filter. It was basically a three minute experience on what would happen if the sun went out.
I may have Canadian kid nostalgia for the first rec, BUT I AM POPPING OFF SO HARD AT THE SECOND. THE LONG CON HAS BEEN REVEALED, AND HISTORY HAS BEEN MADE. THE GUN WAS UNDER THE FLOORBOARDS THE WHOLE TIME.
Just wanted to let you know John that your latest video on fake games was astounding and even got my wife moving from listening over the shoulder to have a passionate discussion about the topic after the video was done. Take your time on any project, I'll always be excited to see it.
clearly the podcast ends in a respectful death battle. and every episode is the story leading up to it. its the episode 1 hook. Regarding John's reccomendation. to quote woolie, "It's a long game!"
God damn does the discussion of John’s video essay HIT as an artist. Burnout and dealing with the emotional state with the finished product of months of work is brutal.
"Why do you people listen?" John asks. I watch to learn about things I knew nothing about and maybe I can sample them myself. I also watch for the satisfaction of seeing Omikron drop lower and lower in rank until there is nothing left and it is at the bottom of all things where it belongs.
Woolie needs to get back at John by recommending Silent Hill Ascension. Omikron is a fucking masterpiece in comparison, and you don't even have to *play* Ascension.
It JUST hit me that this podcast is SEW tricking us all into watching wrestling. He is painting himself as a heel, this entire podcast is one long promo, and now Woolie has been taught how to fight. It's only a matter of time, folks.
Taking a break and coming back to a project with fresh eyes is such an invaluable piece of advice. I don't know how many times I've been working on a project and thought "this is garbage," but after taking a day or two away I look at it again and am impressed with what I managed to put together.
I was just listening to the anarchy reigns+madworld OSTs right before this so that music was an awesome surprise! Super proud of woolie, that whole segment was awesome to watch
2:58:39 Woolie. As someone who not only watched Fighterpedia as it came out back in the day, but ALSO loved the Ode to Grapplers video despite being a hater of grappler characters….this was perfect song choice. In fact that video is probably the main reason I use Alex in Third Strike at all, the only grappler I’ll ever use. Because the song was dope, and prior I had never seen a reverse Hyped Bomb from Alex. So you using this song while you grappled was like a nostalgia power bomb to my heart.
Hell yeah, I really hope John likes what Woolie recommended to him. It's a sick show and I'm so happy we're going to be talking about it and introducing it to many new people.
Dude WOOLIE!. Incredible progress on your weight loss man! You look incredible! Rarely get to see a full body shot of you. Looking good! From a long-time lurker of your content.
Speaking of anxiety, I remember reading something on the lines of "anxiety is built up energy" and it makes a lot of sense especially when I feel so much relief from it when I really push myself physically.
Loving seeing you guys hit your stride. Switched over to the RU-vid version (rather than podcast) well worth it. Went over 3 hours before Josh took out his podcast voice.
Episode 5: Jon delves into Kojima's mind after a near-death experience while Woolie realizes his life has devolved into being asked if starting a new martial art is better than Omikron. Next time: Woolie shares one of the many odd things that happened in his childhood, and Jon decides to bring things full circle. Again.
at about 45:00 Woolie mentions a concept he calls "insider art." A brief correction: it's actually called "outsider art" and it's largely made up of people who never got formal training in the arts creating either for themselves or with aspirations of eventually being recognized. There's actually quite a few video essays on outsider artist figures, and it spans everything from hobbyists who just enjoy the craft occasionally to people creating sprawling works that rival the scope and scale of a Tolkien story It's a fascinating group of artists to look into and the works that come out of that group are genuinely some of the most innovative and thought provoking, especially for "classically trained" artists who get to appreciate the art as a puzzle and tease out the how and why they did what they did
What's so funny is that I went back to the original time Woolie shit talked HxH and it was in service of making the point of "It's okay if people you like don't like the things you do"
honestly this finally pushed me over the edge. i'm going to my first bjj class next saturday. as a 300-something 5'4" trans guy, i'm extremely nervous, but seeing woolie do it gave me the confidence to actually sign up. here's hoping!
Okay waitwaitwait Woolie, that's just how people from Baltimore talk. We ALL say "Aaron earned an iron urn" like that, I'm white and I say it like that.
As a Baltimoron for two years now, I haven't gone full Arnerndaniirnurn yet but I've definitely started rounding out the "t" in Baltimore already to pronounce it kinda like "Baldihmore"
As a lifelong county-city border straddler of the Ballemers, I'll have you know it's 'ernernenernern.' And that it is a perfectly understandable and coherent string of phonemes to us crab people.
As someone who has a severe anxiety disorder, knowing bjj (boxing in woolie's case) helped you guys this much is incredibly heartening. I tried it once before and got gassed before we started and left in shame of my fitness. I think this is what i needed to hear to start turning things around. We'll see what happens.
As someone who has watched this saga unfold for the last six years, I've rarely laughed harder on my own than I did during the last two or three minutes of this podcast
Damnit you two, I was about to get some writing done. Bringing up youtube to listen to some music.. and I saw this is up and am watching all the productivity drain away.... Gonna go bang out this piece and then start this. Loving the pod.
